DVD REVIEW: RING OF HONOR SUPERCARD OF HONOR III - ANOTHER DVD FEATURING FIVE MATCHES YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST OWN

By Ed Shirreffs on 5/30/2008 10:03 AM

Following an insanely good Dragon Gate Challenge II show, Ring of Honor held their third annual Supercard of Honor in Orlando, FL on March 29, 2008 during Wrestlemania weekend.  It will be very hard to top the previous show, but I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do to try.

Delirious vs. Go Shiozaki

Some shenanigans at the beginning of the match.  They finally lock up and Go shoves Delirious into the corner for a clean break.  Side headlock by Delirious.  Go shoves him off, but neither budges when they run into each other.  Delirious bails when Go goes to chop him.  More stalling.

Go with a side headlock.  Delirious takes Go to the mat, then delivers an arm drag, only to bail again when he is threatened by a chop.  Delirious throws the chair into the ring, but the ref quickly gets it out.  Another side headlock by Delirious.  Delirious avoids a chop again.  Go finally chops him and Delirious sells it like he was shot for two.  Go boots Delirious in the corner and Delirious oversells another chop.  Delirious blocks a charge and hits a leaping lariat off the middle turnbuckle for two.  High angle back suplex for two.

Elbows to the back of Go's head.  Go catches him on a charge and puts him on the top turnbuckle, then chops him back down to the mat.  Flying shoulder tackle by Go for two.  Go scoops Delirious up and throws him on the ropes, then hits a knee drop for two.  Snapmare and chop to the back by Go.  He uses some tassels to choke Delirious.  Delirious gets up and scores two with a sunset flip.  Go charges Delirious in the corner and delivers a Fisherman's Buster for two.

Scoop slam by Go and he climbs to the top.  Moonsault by Go is blocked.  Delirious with a series of strikes and leaping lariat.  Delirious lifts Go on his shoulders, then throws him to the mat, scoring two with a back senton.  Go backs Delirious into the corner, but misses a charge, allowing Delirious to score with a Panic Attack.  Delirious climbs to the top , but gets kicked when he goes for Shadows Over Hell.  German Suplex by Go for two.

Roaring chop to Delirious.  Go covers, but Delirious quickly applies the Cobra Stretch.  Go makes the ropes and forces the break.  Delirious ducks a kick and hits an enziguri, but Go no sells and hits a lariat for two.  Go Flasher ends the match.

Your winner, Go Shiozaki!

They show respect for each other after the match.

Larry Sweeney is in the back with Shane Hagadorn, who is checking on Pearce and Albright.  He continues to work on his hostile takeover, then goes to take care of some business.

The YRR (Kenny King, Sal Rinauro, & Chasyn Rance) vs. Bushwhacker Luke, Dingo, & Alex Payne

Dingo and Sal start out.  Dingo with a waistlock.  They trade reversals.  Leg lock on the mat by Dingo.  Sal gets out and applies a wristlock.  He knees Dingo, but gets punched a few times.  Sugarfoot tags in and hits a scoop slam and knee drop.  Sugarfoot slides out of the ring and knocks King off the apron.  The YRR return the favor as Rance and King beat him up on the floor.  Sal covers for two.

Rance tags in and snapmares Payne out of the corner for two.  King tags in and nails Payne with a clothesline for two.  He quickly tags Sal in and they double team Payne, King putting him down with a backbreaker for two.  Luke is late on the save.  King hot shots Payne and Rance hits a spinning heel kick, followed by a springboard leg drop by King.  Rance covers for two.  Sal tags in with an elbow drop off the top rope.  German suplex by Rinauro for two.  King comes on with a slingshot stomp to Sugarfoot's back.

King kicks Payne on the mat.  Payne tries for a backslide and succeeds for two, but King kicks him in the face as soon as he gets up.  King with a delayed vertical suplex that gets countered into a DDT.  Dingo tags in and cleans house with forearms.  Sal kicks him in the gut, but Dingo hits a headscissors takedown out of the corner, then knees Sal in the back for two.  Payne dropkicks King and Rance.  Bushwhacker Luke comes in and cleans house.  Human Battering Ram with Payne and they take down all YRR members before doing the Bushwhacker schtick.

They turn their backs, and get cleared from the ring.  Dingo rolls up Sal, but gets kicked in the face by King and Rance.  They triple team Dingo in the corner and Sal delivers a springboard kick to the face for the win.

Your winners, the YRR!

Davey Richards and Rocky Romero, the ROH Tag Team Champions (who had just taped a match for a PPV that is not included here) are in the ring when Larry Sweeney comes to the ring.  He's here to make some green for the NRC.  He calls Strong a hard head and tries to reason with the other two members.  Strong comes to the ring and says he made it clear that he created the NRC and for the last time, they have no interest.  Stevens runs in and goes after the NRC with Jigsaw and Ruckus.  They take the tag champs to the back and Stevens chops Strong in the aisle.  He goes for a suplex on the ramp, but Strong fights it off.  Stevens' chops have busted open Strong's chest.  Stevens throws Strong into the ring and it looks like their match is about to start.  Stevens punches Strong in the corner.  Strong hits Stevens while his back is turned and then punches the ref to the mat.

FIP World Heavyweight Title Match:  Roderick Strong (c) vs. Erick Stevens

No bell yet.  Stevens and Strong agree on one thing...they want to hit the ref.  So they do.  Strong kicks Stevens low and slaps him in the face.  They go to the floor.  Strong with more stiff chops and forearms.  Strong puts the chair around Stevens' head and shoves him into the ringpost.  Stevens is busted open and Strong continues to assault him.  Hey, I thought that fan said he'd quit wearing Green Lantern gear.  And how can he time the match if no bell has been rung?  Curse you, ROH!

They come back in the ring and Strong props the chair up between two turnbuckles.  Stevens avoids the chair and sends Strong into it HARD.  Stevens with some chops on the ropes.  Strong falls to the mat and Stevens stomps him.  Stevens gets a chair and sets it up in the middle of the ring.  Strong chops him in the face, then chest before laying in with a forearm.  Strong goes for a half nelson backbreaker on the chair, but Stevens elbows out of trouble and drops Strong's face off the seat of the set up chair with a TKO.  Nasty!

FIP chant for Stevens.  Stevens goes to work on the floor and blood is flying out of Strong's forehead.  This is disgusting in a good way.  Stevens throws him back in the ring and goes after the open wound, even biting it.  Sick!  More chops to Strong's chest.  Strong gets the boot up on a choo choo and gets out of the corner with a clothesline.  Chops and a forearm from Strong.  Release German Suplex by Stevens and he hits the choo choo, followed by a hard lariat.  Strong blocks a charge with an enziguri, then nails a running boot.

Strong waits on Stevens to get up.  He kicks him, but it only makes Stevens angrier.  Forearm exchange.  Brutal.  They knock each other to the mat with simultaneous forearms.  Strong has the steel chair and he nails Stevens with it.  Richards and Romero come out.  Richards hands Roddy a pair of scissors and clippers.  They start to take off the mohawk of Stevens.  They are raping him of his dignity!

The bell never rung, so technically this wasn't really a match, but Strong clearly comes out on top.

Recap of the Age of the Fall vs. Briscoes feud.  From one blood bath to another.

Before the match, Jimmy takes the mic and says the revolution is here.  He calls the group a voice for the voiceless.  Hey, maybe AOTF aren't so bad...they bought a homeless guy a ticket.

Relaxed Rules Grudge Match:  Age of the Fall (Jimmy Jacobs & Tyler Black) vs. The Briscoes

Jay and Mark waste no time in getting things started.  Mark superkicks Black and works him over in the corner.  Mark blocks a charge and hits a springboard cross body.  Jay and Mark double team shouldertackle Jimmy, then kick his head off.  AOTF bail.  Jay dives onto Jimmy, then Mark moonsaults off the top rope to the floor.  Jay and Mark pound AOTF on the floor.  They toss AOTF into the crowd.  Mark flips onto Black and Jimmy over the guardrail.  Jimmy fights back against Jay and takes a fan's alcohol.

Mark gets back dropped into some chairs by Black.  Jimmy and Black throw chairs at Jay and Mark respectively.  Mark throws Black into the chairs.  Jimmy uses a rolling case to spear Jay.  He tries to do it again, but Jay kicks him in the head.  Mark is once again back dropped onto chairs.  Jay throws chairs at Jimmy.  Black puts a chair on Mark's head.  Jimmy regains the advantage and punches Jay.  He sits him on a chair and jumps off the bleachers with a clothesline.  Mark tosses a chair at Black, then suplexes him onto chairs.  Jay with some stiff shots to Jacobs, and he tosses a sign on to him.  Mark bulldogs Black onto a set up chair.  Jimmy throws a garbage can at Jay.  Jay dumps Jimmy onto some chairs.  They elevate Jimmy and toss him onto chairs again.

The Briscoes proceed to work on Black, then they go behind the curtain.  They return with a table and move through the crowd.  The table is put on the floor.  Jimmy and Mark brawl above an entranceway and jockey for position.  Jay puts Black on the table.  The homeless guy isn't handicapped!  He gets up and pushes Black off, but for his trouble he gets put on the table.  Mark dives onto the table from the entranceway.

Jay puts Jacobs in the apron.  Black distracts him and Jimmy starts to choke him with a plastic bag.  Black pounds Jay in the head.  Black puts Jay in the tree of woe and AOTF dropkick him.  Black covers for two.  Black with an inverted DDT.  Jimmy off the top with a back senton for two.

AOTF pound Jay in the corner.  Jay blocks a charge from Black and sends Jimmy into the turnbuckle.  Yakuza Kick to Black and a Falcon Arrow to Jimmy for two.  Black and Jay trade punches.  Black runs into a DVD for two.  He gets ready for a Jay Driller, but Jacobs hits a low blow and Black rolls Jay up for two.  AOTF combine for the Super Contra Code, but Jay somehow kicks out.  Jimmy literally pulls his hair out over this.

Black climbs up top, but Mark is back and he pushes him to the floor.  Jay puts Jacobs on the canvas.  They go for the Springboard Doomsday Device, but Jimmy reverses into the End Time (!) and Mark is out.

Your winners, the Age of the Fall!

Erick Stevens is in the back, and he looks like a madman with dried up blood and his mohawk messed up,  He says the war is just beginning.

Jimmy vows that the next step is to get the tag titles back.  Lacey says she has a backup plan if it doesn't work out.  Foreshadowing!

ROH vs. Dragon Gate Challenge Match:  BxB Hulk & Shingo vs. El Generico & Kevin Steen

If this is half as good as last night's Steen and Generico tag, it will still be excellent.  Hulk shows off his dancing skills before Steen and Generico come out.  Steen and Generico show they can dance, too.  Hulk and Generico begin with some reversals, going hold for hold.

Sunset flip by Generico, but Shingo rolls through with a sit out spinebuster for two.  Standing SSP by Hulk for two when Steen breaks the pin up.  Steen powerbombs Hulk for two.  Pumphandle neckbreaker to the knee for two.  Steen climbs to the top.  Shingo tries to push him off, but Steen shoves him off.  Hulk leaps up and kicks Steen.  Shingo tries to suplex Steen off the top, but he can't do it.  Generico comes in and DDTs Shingo out of the corner.

Your winners, BxB Hulk & Shingo!

Stevens is in the back evening out the new haircut.

ROH World Heavyweight Championship Match:  Nigel McGuinness (c) vs. Austin Aries

Elbow to the back of Nigel's head.  Modified STO and swinging elbow drop for two.  More strikes to the back of Nigel's head.  Knee to Nigel's back and he puts some pressure on a chinlock.  Aries ties up Nigel on the mat.  Nigel gets out and claws Aries in the face.  Nigel whips Aries hard into the corner, then throws his shoulder into the ringpost.  He pulls the arm down on the top rope.  Nigel continues to work on that arm in anticipation of the London Dungeon.

Nigel goes for the pin, but Aries easily kicks out.  More pressure is pit on the left arm.  Aries throws Nigel off, but he gets clubbed in the arm.  Nigel uses Aries' arm to choke him.  Aries gets two with a roll up, then bounces off the ropes with a knee to Nigel's chest.  Fireman's carry into a forward roll.  Aries comes off the top with a chop and covers for two.

McGuinness avoids a charge in the corner and slaps Aries to the mat for one.  He places Aries on the top rope for the Tower of London, but Aries elbows out, followed by repeated elbows with his injured arm.  Nigel blocks the brainbuster with a Divorce Court.  The London Dungeon is cinched in, but Aries makes the ropes easily.  European Uppercuts and chops in the corner.  Aries follows Nigel across the ring and applies Last Chancery, but he can't put Nigel away.

More uppercuts and chops, followed by a running European in the corner.  Aries again blocks the Tower of London and hits a Missile Dropkick off the top.  Nigel gets his boot up on the running dropkick.  He goes for the Tower of London again and connects for two.

Nigel crotches Aries on the top rope, but Aries ducks a lariat and applies headscissors in the ropes.  Nigel goes outside the ring and Aries jumps off the top rope.  He whips Nigel into the guardrail and charges with the running dropkick.  Back in the ring, Aries gets multiple dropkicks in the corner and covers for two.  Nigel drives Aries into the corner, but the corner mule kick is blocked.  Aries runs right into a lariat, taking both men down.

Aries and Nigel slap each other.  Roaring elbow from Aries, and he avoids a Lariat with a clothesline, then hits a brainbuster.  Nigel rolls away from the 450 and again locks in the London Dungeon.  Aries tries to back up to the ropes and Nigel puts him in the center of the ring.  Aries counters with a roll up for two.  Knee strikes to the head and he gets over for Last Chancery.  Nigel escapes and goes back to the London Dungeon.  Aries kicks Nigel in the head and blocks a Jawbreaker Lariat with a back slide for two.  Kick to the head by Aries.  He hits another Brainbuster and once again goes to the top.  He nails the 450 Splash that won him his first title, but Nigel gets his boot on the rope.

Nigel bails, then gets out of the way when Aries dives out of the ring.  Aries hits the guardrail and collapses.  Nigel takes advantage and sits Aries on the guardrail before giving him a Lariat to the floor.  Nigel retrieves Aries from the crowd and gets the dead weight into the ring, covering for two.  Nigel pulls Aries up and traps the arm, then connects with a short arm lariat.  Aries kicks out at two, even though McGuinness has a handful of tights.  Nigel tells Aries to get up.  Nigel blocks a lariat and delivers a Crucifix Bomb, but Nigel rolls through and finally hits the Jawbreaker Lariat to win.

Your winner, Nigel McGuinness!

After the match, Nigel leaves and the Age of the Fall come to the ring.  Jacobs says its time for them to talk face to face.  Jimmy says it is the lowest moment of his life, and it was his destiny to lose so AOTF could pick him up.  Jacobs says he can be Aries' own personal Jesus.  Jacobs demands that Aries make a decision.  Lacey grabs the mic and says obviously Jimmy's words mean nothing to Austin.  She says Aries is a man of action, just like AOTF members.  She is prepared to take Aries off on his own to show him why he belongs with them.  She takes Aries by the hand and leads him away.  Jimmy tries to stop her, but she assures him she knows what she is doing.

Just as they are about to leave Tammy returns to make her pitch.  She says Aries must have a concussion if he is leaving with that skank.  Tammy says she has offered him everything and wants to know if Lacey has more.  Aries doesn't answer, but instead just walks away with Aries.  Jimmy and Tyler hold Tammy so Rain can clap her.  The Briscoes make the save.  Pivotal segment for Ring of Honor in 2008.

Nigel is in the back and he says Austin Aries is done, and he is the ace of Ring of Honor.  He tells anyone who thinks they have a chance to bring it on because he'll break their jaw.

Dragon Gate Six Man Tag Match:  Dragon Kid, CIMA, & Ryo Saito vs. Genki Horiguchi, Naruki Doi, & Masato Yoshino

Saito and Genki start with a quick series of reversals, then a stand off.  Knuckle lock.  Genki takes Ryo to the mat, then works a wristlock.  More reversals and another stand off.  CIMA and Doi tag in.  Doi kicks him in the gut and hits a shoulderblock, then stomps CIMA in the back.  Arm drag exchange and another stalemate.  Bear in mind there is a lot of transitional stuff I'm not recapping.

Kid and Yoshino, the two fastest, come in.  Arm drag by Kid, followed by Deja Vu and Yoshino bails.  Genki comes in, but is met with a boot to the gut.  Saito tags in and takes down Genki with a back elbow for one.  Genki goes to the eyes and Doi comes in.  Chinlock by Doi.  Saito blocks a scoop slam and hits one of his own.  Kid tags in and teams with CIMA to double team Doi for two.

Doi picks Kid up and puts him up top, bringing in Genki.  He tosses Kid off the top.  Vertical suplex by Kid for two.  The Muscle Outlawz take turns coming off the top onto Kid's arm.  Double Stomp by Doi.  He takes Kid to the mat with a rolling hammerlock and puts him in a submission, then rolls Kid up for two.

Kid gets dropkicked by Yoshino as he is hanging off Doi.  Yoshino elevates Kid to the apron.  Kid slingshots over the ropes with a chinbreaker.  Yoshino drives Kid to the mat with a neckbreaker.  Kid with a Standing Dragonrana for two.  Kid and Yoshino get Octopus Stretches on Doi and CIMA respectively.  They then go after each other with punches.  Genki and Saito break it up with dropkicks.

Saito catches Genki and drives him to the mat for two.  Genki blocks a charge, but jumps into a German Suplex.  Sunset Flip Powerbomb Combo with CIMA's aid, then CIMA gives Genki a Perfect Driver for two.  Superkick to Genki.  Genki floats out of the Schwein and hits a DDT.  Kid with another chinbreaker.  Yoshino gets incredible height on a dropkick off the top rope to Kid.  At this point I have to pause to catch everything.  It's going that fast.

Your winners, Naruki Doi, Masato Yoshino, & Genki Horiguchi!

All the wrestlers get a well deserved round of applause after the match.

After the match, Sweeney is bragging about how well the weekend went in the back, with all the contacts he made.  He tells ROH the game is on and his ducks are in a row.

Match thoughts:

The opener was kind of fun with Delirious acting scared of the chops.  The match itself was entertaining.

The first six man wasn't my thing, but the crowd seemed into it.  It came across as filler to me.

Strong and Stevens turned out to be more of an angle than anything, but when the angle is that good, who can argue?  It was a nasty, brutish bloodbath.  You could feel the hate with every chop and forearm.  It was unlike anything on Dragon Gate Challenge, so this was a really cool way to set this show apart and make it stand alone.  Definitely a brawl worth going out of your way to watch,

The Briscoes and AOTF had the brawl that you'd expect them to.  I thought they were on the floor a little too long, but it built to Mark's dive.  Jimmy's counter of the Doomsday Device was insane and I had to re-watch it to make sure I had seen it right.  Wow!  Great weekend for tag team wrestling.

The Steen/Generico night two tag was not quite as good as their match against SpeedMuscle, but it's still very entertaining.  Once they got done with the traditional dominate the small guy segment of the match, it really picked up and delivered in a big way.  Three straight matches worth seeing.

Aries and Nigel just went all out and put on a suspenseful title match to really seal the deal and make this must see.  The post match angle was came of as well as could be expected.

If you've seen Dragon Gate six man tags before, you know how amazing that match was.  If you haven't, you have to see it to believe it.  It's like watching Hard Boiled for the first time.  You just can't look at wrestling the same after seeing such a spectacle.

I don't know how they did it, but once again, ROH managed to deliver five straight must see matches in one night (with a major assist from Dragon Gate, of course).  Night one of Mania weekend was slightly better if only because there was no filler match, but...

The ROH World Championship Match was the top of the line title match that would have really put Dragon Gate Challenge over the top.  Ring of Honor has done a brilliant job of making the two nights stand on their own as major events.  Alone, they are strong.  Together, it is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, weekends in the company's six year history.  These DVDs were a thrill to watch, and I hope you'll add them to your collection.  They could edit both DVDs down to two hours and they would still be must buys at the full price.  I'm running out of positive things to say.  I'll just end this by saying I can't wait to find the time to watch these shows again.  Everything came of well on DVD.  The cameramen really stepped up to make sure every move was captured, and that's no easy feat when everything is going over one hundred miles per hour.
