PREVIEWING THE WEC 34 TELEVISED CARD

By David Tees on 6/1/2008 10:56 AM

WEC Lightweight Division Fight

“The Machine” Kenneth Alexander (5-2-0-1NC) vs. “Razor” Rob McCullough (15-4-0)

This fight is about revenge for Rob McCullough, who lost to Kenneth Alexander at the first ever Hitman Fight Productions event in March of 2002. Also, Rob McCullough is coming of the loss of his WEC Lightweight Title to Jamie Varner back at WEC 32. Prior to the loss to Jamie Varner, Rob McCullough went on a nine fight win streak, even defeating MTV “Real Life” reality show star Kit Cope. Rob McCullough is known for his knockout power, because he has won nine of fifteen fights by knockout. As I mentioned earlier, Kenneth Alexander is a fighter who has already defeated Rob McCullough, at the first ever Hitman Fight Productions event. After taking five years off after a loss to Jimmy Terrel in 2002, Kenneth Alexander returned to MMA in March of 2007 and is currently on a two fight win streak. Kenneth Alexander is known for his wrestling and muay tai skills, so his best chance at victory is for him to ground Rob McCullough.

My Prediction: Rob McCullough

WEC Light Heavyweight Division Fight
Chuck Grigsby (13-3-0) vs. Mark Munoz (3-0-0)

Chuck Grigsby is in the perfect position right now to make his WEC debut, riding an eight fight win streak since April of last year. Chuck Grigsby even won two fights in one night over Scott Hough and Heath Johnson for the Victory Fighting Championships organization in September 2007. Thus far in his career, Chuck Grigsby has yet to have a fight go the distance with six victories by submission and five victories by knockout. This will be the first time Chuck Grigsby has fought in 2008, his last fight took place in November 2007, so conditioning could become a factor. Mark Munoz, like Chuck Grigsby, is in a perfect spot to make his WEC debut due to being undefeated and being on a three fight win streak. Despite being a novice in MMA, Mark Munoz has already fought in top MMA organizations like the Palace Fighting Championships and Gladiator Challenge. Mark Munoz is becoming a talented fighter who has won two of three career fights by knockout, with the other win by submission.

My Prediction: Chuck Grigsby

WEC Bantamweight Title Fight
Miguel Angel Torres *Champion* (33-1-0) vs. Yoshiro Maeda (23-4-2)

This WEC Bantamweight Title fight between champion Miguel Angel Torres and Yoshiro Maeda could easily be a fight of the year candidate. Miguel Angel Torres once had a win streak of nineteen straight victories and is currently on a fourteen fight win streak. Miguel Angel Torres won the WEC Bantamweight Title by defeating Chase Beebe at WEC 32 in February of 2008. Until his breakthrough fight at WEC 32, Miguel Angel Torres was long considered to be the underground MMA king. Miguel Angel Torres is one of the most dangerous submission fighters fighting today, with twenty one career victories coming by submission. Yoshiro Maeda is a very experience fighter internationally, fighting in such organizations as PRIDE, DEEP and Pancrase. Speaking of win streaks, Yoshiro Maeda at one point in his career went on a thirteen fight win streak with one draw. Unlike the submission master in Miguel Angel Torres, Yoshiro Maeda is a knockout master, with fourteen victories coming by knockout.

My Prediction: Miguel Angel Torres

WEC Featherweight Title Fight
“The California Kid” Urijah Faber *Champion* (20-1-0) vs. “Little Evil” Jens Pulver (22-8-1)

This fight is easily the equivalent of the UFC 52 event that featured Chuck Liddell versus Randy Couture, in that this event and more importantly, main event, could make or break the company. Urijah Faber has only suffered one career loss, that was to current UFC lightweight contender Tyson Griffin. Besides the one loss, Urijah Faber was on a eight fight win streak and is now riding a twelve fight win streak. Even though he is currently the WEC Bantamweight Champion, Urijah Faber has also fought in the King Of The Cage and Gladiator Challenge companies. Urijah Faber is known for his top notch wrestling skills, in which ten of his career victories were won by submission. Easily one of the most recognizable fighters in MMA today, Jens Pulver is known most by MMA fans for his coaching term on the UFC Ultimate Fighter 5. Jens Pulver has fought in every top MMA organization today like the Ultimate Fighting Championship, PRIDE, Hook N’ Shoot, Shooto and the Bas Rutten Invitational. In his WEC debut at WEC 31, Jens Pulver defeated Cub Swanson by submission in just thirty five seconds into the first round. Jens Pulver is known for his quick hands and striking ability, proven by the fact that he has won more than have of his fights by knockout.

My Prediction: Urijah Faber
