PREVIEWING THE ELITE XC: RETURN OF THE KING PRELIMINARY CARD

By David Tees on 6/12/2008 10:36 AM
Elite XC Lightweight Division Fight
Carl Barton (1-0-0) vs. Kepa Medeiros (0-0-0)

When the two fighters here have a total of one single professional MMA bout between them, you know something’s got to give. The fighter with the one previous fight is Carl Barton, who defeated Josh Linsey at a Fighters Journey event. I would usually say that experience is a factor when one of the fighters hasn’t competed in a professional MMA fight yet, but that statement doesn’t really work this time. It is also hard to comment on the capabilities of Kepa Medeiros for this fight because this fight will be his MMA debut.

My Prediction: Carl Barton

Elite XC Bantamweight Division Fight
Russell Doane (1-1-0) vs. Dwayne Haney (3-0-0)

Russell Doane entered the MMA world as a highly touted prospect, which was proven in his professional MMA debut when he defeated Tyson Nam for the Icon Sport promotion in March 2007. Just two weeks later, Russell Doane would suffer his first career loss to Mark Tajon in the Kauai Cage Match 7 event. In his brief career, Russell Doane has yet to have a fight go past three minutes of the opening round, so his conditioning has yet to be fully tested. Prior to this fight against Russell Doane, Dwayne Haney has fought all of his professional fights in the Icon Sport promotion. Dwayne Haney has amassed this undefeated streak with all wins coming by submission and none of his fights have gone past the second round. Dwayne Haney has won all of his fights by submission and Russell Doane’s only loss came by submission, so the ground game is going to be the factor here.

My Prediction: Dwayne Haney

Elite XC Middleweight Division Fight
PJ Dean (1-2-0) vs. Dean Lista (1-1-1)

After suffering two straight losses to begin his career, PJ Dean finally picked up the seemingly out of reach victory when he defeated Eddie Rincon in March 2008 for the Icon Sport promotion. Prior to that first victory, it was nearly a year when he fought the last time and suffered that second career loss. Two of three career fights for PJ Dean went to a decision, which shows that he does have the stamina to go the distance if he needs to. PJ Dean has yet to get a knockout or submission, so it will be interesting to see if he can dictate the fight and where he would do so. In three career fights, Dean Lista has seen every result possible in a fight with a victory, a loss and a draw. In his last fight, Dean Lista fought in the highly respected Gracie families Gracie Proving Ground promotion, where he defeated Daniel Devers to gain his first win. Dean Lista will want to capitalize on his ground and pound skills to gain his second career victory and have a winning record for the first time in his career.

My Prediction: Dean Lista

Elite XC Heavyweight Division Fight
Chris Bernard (1-2-0) vs. Lolohea Mahe (2-0-0)

In his first night as a professional MMA fighter, Chris Bernard competed in the X-1 Grand Prix 2007 tournament, advancing to the second round before losing to Andre Shaolin. Chris Bernard has yet to have a fight go the distance, and his only career victory has come by way of knockout. Chris Bernard needs a record to get his professional record to an even win percentage and he should do this by keeping the fight on the feet and going for the knockout. Lolohea Mahe is quickly becoming a feared striker in the MMA community, with his two career victories coming by knockout. Like his opponent Chris Bernard, Lolohea Mahe has also competed in the X-1 promotion, but not in the grand prix. Lolohea Mahe has superior striking skills when compared to Chris Bernard, so keeping the fight on the feet is his best option to gain victory.

My Prediction: Lolohea Mahe

Elite XC Lightweight Division Fight
Kaleo “Leo Boy” Kwan (6-8-0) vs. Mike Aina (8-6-1)

Despite having a losing record, Kaleo Kwan’s career started off with tons of promise as he made it to the finals in the Rumble On The Rock “Proving Grounds” tournament. Kaleo Kwan has fought in some of the top MMA promotions like Sho XC, Icon Sport and King Of The Cage. This is also the rubber match for his rivalry with Mike Aina, because Kaleo Kwan defeated Mike Aina in their first fight, but lost to him in their second encounter. Even with the losing record, Kaleo Kwan has only lost twice by knockout and submission, with the remaining losses being caused by decision. Mike Aina is a rising star in MMA, having already fought current International Fight League Lightweight Champion Ryan Schultz, UFC veteran Roger Huerta and Elite XC star Nick Diaz. Mike Aina has primarily been fighting for the Rumble On The Rock promotion, where nine of fifteen career fights took place at. All six of Mike Aina’s career defeats have come by decision, so Mike Aina has yet to be knocked out or submitted,

My Prediction: Mike Aina

Elite XC Bantamweight Division Fight
Mark Oshiro (10-1-0) vs. Chris Willems (1-1-0)

This could be the fight that puts Mark Oshiro on the MMA map as he brings his six fight win streak to the cage against Chris Willems. Mark Oshiro has already fought in top notch MMA organizations like Super Brawl, Icon Sport, Elite XC and Sho XC. Mark Oshiro is a well balanced fighter who can fight on his feet with five career knockout victories or put the fight on the ground with four career submission victories. With eleven career fights under his belt, only two of them went past the first round, with both of those fights going to decision. Chris Willems enters Elite XC after only fighting twice before in one other organization, Rumble On The Rock. The first two career fights for Chris Willems didn’t go past the first round, with Chris Willems winning once by knockout and losing once by submission. The biggest factor against Chris Willems is his lack of experience, which may hamper his chances to gain the victory.

My Prediction: Mark Oshiro

Elite XC Middleweight Division Fight
Kala “Kolohe” Hose (6-1-0) vs. Robert “Bubba” McDaniel (10-4-0)

Kala Hose is a fighter on the rise in the MMA work, especially after getting the biggest victory of his career over Phil Baroni at a March 2008 Icon Sport event. After suffering a loss in his MMA debut, Kala Hose is currently riding a six fight win streak while competing in Icon Sport, Sho XC and Elite XC. Kala Hose is a devastating striker who has achieved all of his six career victories by knockout and is becoming more dangerous with each passing day. A victory here by Kala Hose could put him in the elite of the Elite XC middleweight division and put him inline for a future Elite XC Middleweight Title fight with current champion Robbie Lawler. Robert McDaniel is a fighter, who like his opponent Kala Hose, could transition a possible victory to become a top fighter in Elite XC. Prior to his upcoming Elite XC debut, Robert McDaniel has primarily competed in King Of The Cage and Freestyle Cage Fighting. All four of Robert McDaniel’s losses have come by submission, while eight of his ten career victories has also come by way of knockout. Robert McDaniel must be the opposite of Kala Hose in fight strategy and put this fight on the ground and lock in a submission to gain victory.

My Prediction: Kala Hose
