Welcome to Divas and the City, the column which analyses the latest Diva/Knockout news and action – from a female perspective, I might add. I am your columnist, Melanie "I Wish My Life Was Like Carrie Bradshaw" Adler, your resident Diva expert. A new issue of "Divas and the City" can be found right here at PWInsider Xtra every weekend, so spare aside some time from your busy weekend schedule, won't ya?
Previously on Divas and the City...
We discussed the WWE Draft last week, which took place this past Monday with the Supplemental Draft on Wednesday. In last week's column, I wrote that I definitely thought Maria should move to SmackDown and that I would personally love to see Layla on Raw. Guess what? I was two for two, both moves are set to happen and I couldn't be more pleased. Unfortunately, another move I wanted to see didn't materialise – Kelly Kelly to SmackDown. Kelly has simply outgrown her home of ECW and really deserved the opportunity to become a full time SmackDown Diva and prosper from the experience and title opportunity.
This week: 'Gold Rush'
Tonight is WWE's second annual Night of Champions pay per view, which is one of the more unique events on the calendar. Unfortunately, it seems that for the other 364 days WWE could care less about some of the titles which makes the card seem lackluster and thrown together at the last minute. Case in point, this year's card doesn't seem very strong. However, one (or two) aspects I look forward to are the Women's Championship match and the Divas Championship match should it happen.
The Women's Championship match between Katie Lea and Mickie James has been something I've been looking forward to since Katie joined Raw nearly six months ago. I really love Katie's look, character and potential and think she could be the next big thing for the women's division. For some reason she reminds me of Lita, too. However, that's neither here nor there... Katie and Mickie's feud has been sort of built up over the past couple of months, I say sort of because there have been major gaps in the storytelling. A month or so ago, we had a backstage segment between the two in which Katie teased Mickie over her relationship with John Cena – this seemed to lead to a feud between the two. Well, the feud was reignited when Katie was officially introduced to the women's division in a tag team match following One Night Stand. Now, had this feud been given more time to develop over the past few weeks – I think this match could be considered the "big pay-off." WWE has a habit with the Divas, of stopping and starting feuds before they can really get interesting. I think fans could have really gotten into this feud if they had really pushed it hard over the past few weeks.
Nonetheless, I'm sure the end product tomorrow night will be a great match. It'll be interesting to see how Katie fairs in a one-on-one singles match with Mickie, which we have not seen on TV yet. However, their portion of the mixed tag team match two weeks ago on Raw was a fantastic pre-cursor to this match-up, Katie showed a lot of ferocity and they seemed to gel together very well. It'll be interesting to see what happens at Night of Champions, I am hoping for a great match. Surprisingly, WWE has really delivered of late in Divas matches on pay per view and I think the trend will continue, we'll just have to see how this plays out tonight.
I do think and want for Mickie to retain here, I think it's too soon for Katie to win the title. I would love to see this feud mapped out for longer, perhaps a rematch at Great American Bash. With Melina out, we are also left with the Glamazon, Beth Phoenix without anything to do. Perhaps have her interject herself into the feud and make this a triple threat match at SummerSlam.
Next, we have a "Will they? Won't they?" question mark surrounding the new Divas Championship. Will we see a winner crowned at Night of Champions? I mean surely, it would be a logical choice. Why choose now to introduce this new title if the end match wasn't going to take place at Night of Champions? Again, this is a storyline that started out strong with the "Golden Dreams Match" and then in recent weeks, WWE has failed to follow-up and deliver. I don't know about you, but this whole plot with the Divas trying to impress Vickie hasn't really worked for me; I want solid decisions, I want the Diva who faces Natalya to have deserved the title shot. I think a tournament would have worked better because we have been left with a lot to be desired over the past few weeks. There has been little emphasis on the title, which has left me frustrated.
Should this match happen at Night of Champions, I fully expect Michelle McCool to face Natalya and this is a match I definitely want to see. These two have impressed me so much and WWE has been teasing this feud for a while now, bring it on!
Television Thoughts
The Raw tag team match was something of a dream match for me, unfortunately it was too short to really get into. I hope WWE does this match again in future.
Impact saw the continuation of the Awesome Kong challenge, followed by Shantelle Taylor hitting the ring. I'm not sold on this feud and from spoilers, it just seems to get worse.
Meanwhile, the "Bimbo Brawl" between Moose and ODB was just incredible. I was both shocked and intrigued to see women battling it out with shovels and the like. A fun match that put over Moose really well.
SmackDown delivered one of it's best Diva matches of the year in a six Diva tag team match. I was thoroughly impressed with Kelly Kelly, she really has grown into quite the wrestler and seemed more confident than ever in the ring. Natalya was just as fantastic as ever, this girl really has a bright future. I love watching her wrestle, I would love for WWE to give her a nice, long match in future.
That's all for this week's Divas and the City. I hope you all enjoy the pay per view tonight. We'll be back same time next week, so be sure to visit! Until then, get your Diva fix on a daily basis at Diva Dirt (http://diva-dirt.com). Thanks for reading!
