PREVIEWING THE SHO XC: SUGANUMA VS. HAMMAN II PRELIMINARY CARD

By David Tees on 8/13/2008 10:54 AM

Sho XC Welterweight Division Fight
Marcus Levesser (6-2-0) vs. Josh McDonald (3-3-0)

Marcus Levesser started his MMA career in impressive fashion with four straight victories, but has gone two and two in his next four fights. The highest profile fight thus far in Marcus Levesserʼs career came in the debut event for Adrenaline MMA, where he lost to Tom Belt by TKO in the first round. Prior to coming to Sho XC, Marcus Levesser competed in EFX Fury, Max Fights and the Adrenaline MMA promotion. Marcus Levesser has gained five of six career victories by submission and knockout, but is susceptible to being knocked out because his two losses came by TKO. Josh McDonald trains with Cesar Gracie and has already competed in such promotions as Rumble On The Rock and World Extreme Cagefighting. Interestingly enough, all three of Josh McDonalds victories have come by decision, so his finishing abilities are suspect at this point. Like his opponent Marcus Levesser, Josh McDonald is susceptible to being knocked out, with two of three career losses coming by TKO.

My Prediction: Marcus Levesser

Sho XC Welterweight Division Fight
Lucas Gamaza (2-0-0) vs. Mike Moreno (3-2-0)

Despite being a relative newcomer to MMA, Lucas Gamaza has already competed successfully in the Elite XC promotion, defeating Devon Howard in April 2008. Lucas Gamaza only made his MMA debut a few months ago in March 2008 at a Rebel Fighter event, defeating Jack Montgomery. Lucas Gamaza has won both of his previous fights by decision, so his finishing abilities are unknown right now. Mike Moreno fought in a big fight early in his MMA career, losing to WEC and KOTC veteran Dave Terrell. Mike Moreno has already fought in top promotions like World Extreme Cagefighting and Palace Fighting Championships. Mike Moreno will look to keep the fight on the feet with two of three victories coming by way of knockout.

My Prediction: Lucas Gamaza

Sho XC Lightweight Division Fight
Jesse Brock (7-3-0) vs. Josh Rave (8-4-0)

Jesse Brock is a rising lightweight fighter in MMA having already fought UFC veteran Doug Evans and WEC veteran Donald Cerrone. Besides competing against impressive competition, Jesse Brock has also fought in top promotions like the Alaska Fighting Championship, Ring Of Fire and Xtreme Fight Series. With the first two fights of his career being the only exception, the last eight fights of Jesse Brockʼs career has not gone past the opening round. Jesse Brock will be comfortable fighting both on the feet and on the ground with four of seven career victories coming by knockout and submission. After taking a three year break from 2003 to 2006, Josh Rave returned to professional MMA by amassing a record of seven wins and three losses. Josh Rave has fought in top MMA companies like Extreme Challenge, Xtreme Fighting Organization and Ring Wars. Like his opponent Jesse Brock, Josh Rave is a fighter who is comfortable with the fight on the feet or on the ground, with five of eight career victories coming by knockout and submission.

My Prediction: Jesse Brock

Sho XC Featherweight Division Fight
Ralph Lopez (3-0-0) vs. Roberto Vargas (2-0-0)

With only three fights under his belt, Ralph Lopez has already competed in the International Fighting Competitions and Palace Fighting Championships. It has been more than a year since Ralph Lopez last competed in a professional MMA fight, last competing in July 2007 in a victory over Marcus Blood at Palace Fighting Championships 3. Ralph Lopez has so far finished all of his fights by knockout and submission, with only one fight going past the first round. Roberto Vargas made in MMA debut in auspicious fashion, by fighting in Sho XC and defeating Telly Saunders. The only other fight in Roberto Vargasʼs career took place in the Invincible promotion, where he defeated Brian Aquirre. It has been less than two months since Roberto Vargas last competed, so conditioning could play a factor. Roberto Vargas has also won both of his fights by knockout and submission, but both of his fights went into the third round.

My Predictions: Roberto Vargas

Sho XC Womenʼs 140lb. Division Fight
Katrina Alendal (1-1-0) vs. Melanie LaCroix (2-0-0)

This fight could all be about conditioning for Katrina Alendal, who just fought less than a month ago at a Freestyle Cage Fighting event where she defeated Liz Carreiro. The only other fight in Katrina Alendalʼs career took place at Unified Cage Fights 6 in September 2007, where she lost to Elizabeth Posener. Katrina Alendal will be looking to put this fight on the ground, because her only previous victory has come by submission. Melanie LaCroix previously competed for Sho XC in April 2008, where she defeated Melissa Vasquez by KO. Prior to that fight, Melanie LaCroix fought in the Global Knockouts promotion in November 2007 and defeated Grace Magnussen by submission. Melanie LaCroix is comfortable with the fight on the ground or on the feet with both of her victories coming by knockout and submission.

My Prediction: Melanie LaCroix
