ISLE OF PUERTO RICO: LOTS OF NEWS FROM THE COMMONWEALTH

By Jose M. Perez on 8/22/2008 12:07 PM

- WWC held their weekly house show/TV taping last Saturday in Ponce, PR.  WWC Universal Champion Noriega defeated a masked "mystery wrestler" with the help of Huracan Castillo.  During the intro for the mystery wrestler, he took the mic and stated that "Tonight, the karats will shine in Ponce".  The crowd went nuts as that is the catch phrase of Ponce's own "Abbad", who has been out of the wrestling scene for quite some time.  He did keep the mask during the entire match, so his "true identity" was never revealed.  "Lightning" defeated Ray Gonzalez via DQ after "La Familia" interfered in the match.  "Thunder" came in to help him, but was soon beaten down.  Out of the locker room comes a bloody Orlando Colon and cleans house.  Colon was originally supposed to face Gonzalez but never showed up at bell time.  We should be able to see the entire backstage angle on this Saturday's TV show.  In other match results Thunder & Lightning defeated Bad Boy Bradley & Johnny Ringo; D'Jour Twins defeated "Los Adorables"; and Tommy Diablo defeated Rico Suave with help from his bodyguard and Avriela.

- IWA-PR was also in action last Saturday in Bayamon, PR.  "Los Duenos de la Malicia" Dennis & Noel retained their tag team gold after defeating "Cruz del Diablo" Cruzz & Diabolico in a steel cage match.  In this bout, there was interference from "Faces of Fear" Spectro & Rainstein, which allowed for Dennis and Noel to escape the cage and keep their belts.  In other matches Bison Smith defeated Giant Manson, who had cost Smith the IWA title last week when he interfered in his match against Joe Bravo.  Also, Onix became the new IWA Cruiserweight Champion after defeating Death Warrant; "La Rabia" (Niche & Xteffy) defeated Hardam Kadafi y Zaeir Arafat; Chicano & Blitz defeated "Faces of Fear" Spectro & Rainstein; and the Superstar Romeo vs Richard Rondon match never got underway as they never made it to the ring.  They fought all over the arena and into the crowd, thus the ref declared it a "No Contest".

- Savio Vega did an interview with local newspaper "Primer Hora".  He talks about his new job at with TNA.  Dutch Mantel was the point of contact for him to get the offer to go to work for them.  He stated that in his position as an agent he is tasked with working with the women's division as well as helping the production of the "Xplosion" show.  During the interview he talks about different subjects, including the state of the wrestling business in Puerto Rico, his thoughts about Shane and Ray Gonzalez working for WWC, Mario Savoldi and much more.  Since the it was for a paper in Puerto Rico, the interview was in Spanish.  In any case, if you'd like to read it, you may find it by clicking here.

- Local wrestling site LuchaLibreonline.tv has posted an interview with the promoter of one of the new companies that will debut in the island soon.  As I stated last week, Nonstop Wrestling Entertainment (NWE-PR) is scheduled to have their first show in 4 to 6 weeks.  The promoter, Osvaldo Ruiz, was the person that brought TNA to the island a while back.  He stated that, as we mentioned here last week, there will be a mixture of young talent and veterans, and will also incorporate some international talent as special attractions.

- Our friend Javier Gonzalez, from LuchaLibreonline.tv, has reported that longtime IWA color commentator Axel Cruz has signed with Extreme Wrestling Organization (EWO), which is the other new company that will be holding their first event on August 31st at Arena Pier 10 in San Juan, PR.  This is a huge blow to the IWA announcing team, as Cruz has been the only constant face and voice of the team throughout the years.  Also, his partner, Nelson Centeno, has also signed a deal to work with this new company.  This gives the company a good announcing team from the start.  Photos of the contract signing were included in the story.  Others that have also made the jump from IWA to EWO have been referees Pelayo Vazquez and E
