LIVE REPORT FROM CHILE'S BIGGEST WRESTLING EVENT IN YEARS - REVOLUTION LUCHA LIBRE'S WAR OF THE TITANS

By Roberto Miranda on 9/15/2008 12:22 PM
ere's my report from yesterday's big wrestling event in Santiago of Chile "Guerra de Titanes: La batalla inicial" (War of Titans: The initial battle) made possible by "Revolucion Lucha Libre" at Teatro Caupolican, this was the biggest wrestling event in Chile in 30 years.  I said 25,  but I was wrong yesterday they said 30. I just have to walk like 3 streets from my house to Teatro Caupolican so I was the one that got to be early to get the best possible seats.

Here's a photo of the group, we're in the wrestling school of RLL, the sign says: "Here it is RLL School" http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/4718/dsc01472gk4.jpg

They had banners with most of the wrestlers haning, the scenario looked really good. Principe Pensacola was the victim of our sign as we put it right over his banner. The place was like 2 thirds full, about 3000 people went, so the show met expectations of crowd.

The announcer Ronchy came out to a pop and chants of "Ronchy". First there were the pre-show opening matches with the less experienced wrestlers.

First Opener: Puma Chileno (Chilean Puma) vs. Cano

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/7637/dsc01487kd7.jpg

Puma received a great reception because to the new fans he's a colorful character, and the old fans knew he was coming back from his trip to Mexico. The match itself wasn't very good mainly because the guys weren't on the same page for the most part and didn't have much chemistry. The positive of the match is that Cano in a short period of time has learned how to play the heel in just his third or fourth professional match, he's a guy for the future. Winner: Cano after pulling Puma's mask out and then rolled him up in an absolutely great heel move.

Second Opener: Las Serpientes Ten-Ten y Cai Cai (The snakes Ten-Ten and Cai-Cai) vs Grim Ripper and Vigilante Extremo (Extreme Guardian).

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/4928/dsc01494ca7.jpg

http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/1916/dsc01499wt4.jpg

The match had the snakes playing the underdogs to the more powerful duo of Ripper and Extremo. This match wasn't very good either, especially taking in consideration the debut match of the snakes a month ago was awesome. Again the guys didn't seem very synchronized but Extremo (coming back from Mexico too) tried to carry the match with stiff shots.

Winners: Las Serpientes after a roll-up, after the match they ran to the locker-room trying to avoid retaliation by Ripper and Extremo.

Then there was a not enough short circus show. I guess the producer of Guerra de Titanes also has money on the circus.

Then a short musical act by Florcita Motuda, rapper Zaturno was advertised too but didn't show up.

The main show started with Mister Chile (a local wrestling legend) coming out to hype the return of wrestling to Teatro Caupolican the place that saw most of his carreer and the golden age of wrestling in Chile.

And finally the main show started.

First Match: 5 man Battle Royal, the winner becomes #1 contender to Titulo Nacional (National Title).  Eliminations are over the top rope. Benancio Retamales vs Ariki Toa vs Impacto vs Atemista w/ Tiffany vs Jessy Lover

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/6616/dsc01514lm5.jpg

http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/3593/dsc01525ba4.jpg

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/4827/dsc01526ui7.jpg

http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/4315/dsc01530ba2.jpg

http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/987/dsc01535hl9.jpg

Benancio represents a huaso (sort of a Chilean cowboy), Ariki is from Easter Island, Impacto is "El angel del dolor" (The angel of pain), Atemista is a superhero and Jessy Lover is an Argentinean (which are hated here, like the US-Canada feud). Elimination were over the top rope. Early on the match everyone worked on Ariki because he's the biggest but the first eliminated was Benancio by Jessy and the crowd hated it.

Jessy is becoming a prominent heel quickly. Then Ariki was eliminated in a collective effort. Then Impacto was out. Tiffany got involved attacked Jessy while Atemista was knowcked out, finally Atemista elminated Jessy with a scissor move and hang on the ropes. Winner: Atemista. Before the second match Mackenna, president of RLL came out to say how he stripped the Titulo Nacional Absoluto (Absolute National Title or Undisputed National Title, it's a different one from the National Title) from XL (one of the top faces) at last event El Ultimo de los Dias (Last of the Days) because XL is a delinquent, uneducated low-life, and awarded it back to former champion Castigador (Punisher).

They showed a video package of the match which was a Triple Threat between XL, Castigador and KTF, I saw the match live and it was great and brutal, XL won after a moonsault from the second floor on Castigador (KTF was knocked out by a Powerbomb from the ring to a table) and then an Extra Large Driver by XL, then Mackenna came out and stripped the title from XL and awarded it back to Castigador. Back from the package Mackenna said he's a fair man and will give XL another chance.

Second Match: Triple Threat match the winner becomes #1 contender to the Titulo Nacional Absoluto: XL vs Giger vs KTF

 http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/2858/dsc01554hx9.jpg

http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/9016/dsc01560yr6.jpg

http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/4666/dsc01564oi1.jpg

XL's character is hard to explain, let's say he's an anti-hero, Giger is billed as The Most Dominant wrestler (he's the tallest wrestler on the roster) and KTF was now billed as an Anarchist (he was a communist before, i guess communism isn't family friendly). The match wasn't very good, mainly because Giger instead of destroying people with power tried too many high-flying moves, also the quickest and most athletic guy of the the three XL was selling an injury to his knee and finally the often too stiff KTF was striking too weak, also the lack of violence didn't help (especially when they showed that great hardcore match from last event).

As I said XL was selling a knee injury, at some point referees came out to bring him back to backstage but he shoved them and came back to the ring to a great pop.

http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/466/dsc01571mq1.jpg

XL saved the match with stiff shots and an incredible shooting star press to the outside on Giger, he landed perfectly on him. KTF tried to take the opportunity to finish XL but XL countered with an Extra Large Driver and won the match.

Winner: XL.

Third Match: Triple Threat Intergender Trios match for the Titulos por Equipos (I don't know how to properly translate because these were the Tag Titles but now the tag champions and their partner came out with belts so I guess the titles are now a Trios Intergender Title). Los Payasos (The Clowns): Krozty, Jay Jay Joker and Alison vs. La Secta del Conocimiento Los Mateistas (The Sect of Knowledge The Nerds): Gaston Mateo, Lito and Kristy vs Team Sexy: Sinner, Funky Shop and Jazmin (c).

http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/2396/dsc01579dx5.jpg

http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/7350/dsc01588zk4.jpg

http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/4857/dsc01596lt5.jpg

The referee for the match was Peter Vera, wich is important because he's also a Mateista. Sinner is some kind of stripper-dancer, Funky Shop is now a "flamboyant" guy so I think "gay" isn't family friendly either, and Jazmin is the good looking girl. Los Mateistas are lead by El Mesias (The Messiah) Gaston Mateo, at the last show they lost their best wrestlers in Engranaje Jack and Makina, in half joke half serious we said Kristy would have to carry them now, not so surprisingly it occurred, she didn't just carried her team, but she carried most of the match, the other girls were good if you take in consideration Jazmin was having one of her first matches and Alison is really young.

Kristy showed she's by far the best female on the roster. The match wasn't very good because sometimes they tried too much, and hadn't much pace, when Kristy was in the ring it was better. The end saw Kristy continually trying to bring the "Book of Knowledge" to the ring while someone was trying to pin Los Mateistas so Peter Vera interrupted the count to stop her (which didn't make sense from a referee standpoint, but did from a storyline point of view).

Finally Kristy knocked out the other females with the book Peter took it from her and knocked out Los Payasos and Los Mateistas covered for the cheap win. Winners: Kristy and Peter Vera and two other guys that didn't do much. So again half joke half serious, the only question is how Kristy is going to carry all three belts and her partners too.

It was time for intermission as two hot girls came out to dance and promote a local radio station.

Back from intermission it was time for another match. Fourth Match: 2 of 3 Falls for the Guerra de Titanes Cup Montoya vs. Perro Ramces (c)

http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/5388/dsc01619ya5.jpg

http://img57.imageshack.us/img57/193/dsc01629pl0.jpg

Probably I had too high expectations for this match because Montoya and Ramces are two of the most technically gifted guys on the roster, I expected a lot of chain wrestling that didn't occur, instead the match was pretty standard with both guys doing their spots (which are really good, but wasn't exactly what I expected). The story was Montoya playing the underdog because the size difference. Perro Ramces has a legit background on MMA which they always hype. First fall saw Montoya winning with a quick roll-up. Second fall had Ramces on top after a Elbow Drop from the top rope. Third fall saw Montoya winning in another upset.

Winner: and new holder of the cup Montoya.

Fifth Match: For the Titulo Nacional Absoluto Castigador vs. Makina (Machine)

http://img354.imageshack.us/img354/6567/dsc01648vl2.jpg

http://img397.imageshack.us/img397/3061/dsc01651po5.jpg

Castigador came out first and cut a promo on Mister Chile about how Mister Chile was the icon of wrestling but now the icon is Castigador because he's been putting his body on the line as champion for over a year (which is true) and how Mister Chile hasn't been around working his back off like Castigador is doing. Castigador finally said Mister Chile is a ruined old man that has to retire and that it's time for the new generation of wrestlers to take over (amen!). In my opinion Castigador is the best overall wrestler on RLL, he's a really good wrestler, very athletic and quick for a guy his weight, has a great character, is very charismatic and knows how to generate heel heat, also his remarks during matches are pure gold like right before jumping from the top of a cage he shouted "I am invincible" accompanied by an evil laugh and a face of madness.  The guy plays the character really well, he looks really menacing, and in private the guy is really calm.

By the way, Castigador was a Nazi character, but Nazism isn't family friendly at all, so he's now a nationalist. Enough Castigador propaganda, the match saw a big challenge to Castigador because he couldn't use his power arsenal on Makina, Castigador showed why he's the top guy doing a lot of new moves like the Militar School (like the old school but using a leg drop and then an armbar) and technical stuff i never saw from him.

The finish saw Castigador's sidekick Grim Ripper come out with a chair that Castigador used to counter an spear by Makina. Ripper suffered a spear and I didn't see how he injured his leg, he had to be helped to the back.

Winner: and still champion Castigador.

After the match Castigador taunted Mister Chile who came out took his shirt off and bodyslammed Castigador.  Castigador then cut a promo saying he was exhausted from his match, and he challenged Mister Chile to a match at next event in Valparaiso (Mister Chile's hometown) to see who is the best.

Main Event: 4 way Cage match for the Titulo Nacional (which is lower than the Titulo Nacional Absoluto). Engranaje Jack vs Coyote vs Toro (Bull) vs Principe Pensacola (Prince Pensacola) (c) http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/3404/dsc01687do3.jpg

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/2617/dsc01696bi1.jpg

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/1902/dsc01699yi9.jpg

http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/9773/dsc01704iv9.jpg

As a side note and very short tribute the first RLL champion Bobby Killa was helping on the show, he's the guy nearest to the camera. He had to retire after a serious knee injury.

http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/5421/dsc01685mo3.jpg

The only way to win was escaping the cage by climbing (not by the door). As the cage was lowered the announcer reminded us the story of the cage and how Toro won the first two cage matches. Coyote was hugely over mainly because he's a lovable character from his very entrance with a high tempo song, a crazy attitude and a daredevil style. Toro is billed as "Doctor of Wrestling". The match saw the lighter guys working over Toro, and Toro overpowering them and being brutal, throwing them to against the cage. First highspot came with a Tower of Doom from the top of the cage on Coyote with Toro as the base. Then Pensacola risked his life executing his finisher from the top of the cage a Moonsault Legdrop.

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/634/dsc01710ng6.jpg

Coyote did a Super C4 from the top on Pensacola.

http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/1093/dsc01715bs0.jpg

Then Coyote was about to win but he was shoved from the top of the cage by Engranaje. http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/6605/dsc01719gm3.jpg

http://img392.imageshack.us/img392/8503/dsc01721ns6.jpg

Everyone but Coyote was on top of the cage brawling, the place went nuts trying to reanimate Coyote who was out cold, finally Coyote climbed too and shoved the rest down and won the match and the place erupted.

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/2351/dsc01731ud9.jpg

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/1662/dsc01739fi1.jpg

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/209/dsc01741qy2.jpg

Best match I've seen live, not just because the highspots, but it was fast paced and everything clicked, it made the show's grade go from Ok to Very Good. Coyote cut a short promo thanking the crowd saying the title isn't only his, the title is for the fans too. Coyote celebrated and the show ended.

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/8590/dsc01754pu3.jpg

Props to Coyote because he was the only one who acknowledged us (we were in a section almost empty, that's why we were ignored by everyone else, and that's why most photos have the guys' backs and not their faces). A good show if you take the fact that it was the first time in front of so many fans for most of the wrestlers and the fact that the style had to be toned down to make it more family friendly.
