PREVIEWING THE WEC 36: FABER VS. BROWN TELEVISED CARD

By David Tees on 11/5/2008 2:16 PM

WEC Middleweight Division Fight
Jake Rosholt (4-0-0) vs. Nissen Osterneck (5-0-0)

This is a key fight for both middleweight fighters, because a victory for either fighter could put them into the UFC as the WEC is abolishing the middleweight division after this event. Jake Rosholt is an undefeated fighter making his WEC debut, but has seen action in the Masters Of The Cage, Extreme Fight League and High Roller Productions promotions. After winning his professional MMA debut by submission, Jake Rosholt has won his last three fights by knockout. Jake Rosholt will be looking to keep the fight on the feet, with three career victories coming by way of knockout. Nissen Osterneck is another undefeated fighter who has spent time in HDNet Fights, Gracie Proving Ground and Cassino Fight promotions. Nissen Osterneck is a fighter known for finishing fights, as none of his five professional fights have gone to decision. Nissen Osterneck will be looking to put this fight on the ground, with four victories coming by way of submission.

My Prediction: Jake Rosholt

WEC Featherweight Division Fight
Jens “Little Evil” Pulver (22-9-1) vs. Leonard “Bad Boy” Garcia (11-3-0)

Jens Pulver is one of the most decorated fighters in MMA, fighting top competitors like Joe Stevenson, Din Thomas, Caol Uno, Dennis Hallman, BJ Penn, Duane Ludwig, Takanori Gomi, Hayato Sakurai, Joe Lauzon and Urijah Faber. Jens Pulver also fought in top promotions like the Ultimate Fighting Championships, World Extreme Cagefighting, PRIDE, International Fight League and Shooto. Jens Pulver last competed in a losing effort to Urijah Faber at WEC 34, which was the highest rated event the WEC had on Versus since its debut a few years back. Jens Pulver will be looking to use his striking skills to gain a victory, with thirteen career victories coming by knockout. Leonard Garcia has forever been immortalized in MMA lure after being one of two MMA fighters featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Leonard Garcia won his previous WEC fight over Hiroyuki Takaya and a victory over Jens Pulver could easily put Leonard Garcia in WEC Featherweight Title contention. Leonard Garcia had previously fought in the UFC, losing to Roger Huerta and Cole Miller before entering the WEC. Leonard Garcia will be looking to put this fight on the ground, with eight career victories coming by submission.

My Prediction: Leonard Garcia

WEC Middleweight Title Fight
Paulo “Ely” Filho (16-0-0) *Champion* vs. Chael Sonnen (20-9-1)

This fight could easily become one of the most historical fights in World Extreme Cagefighting history as this will be the final WEC Middleweight Title fight in company history. This fight is a rematch from WEC 31, when Paulo Filho defeated Chael Sonnen by submission, but Chael Sonnen argued that he never actually gave up during the fight. Paulo Filho is considered one of the most talented MMA fighters today, with victories over Yuki Kondo, Murilo Rua, Ryo Chonnan, Joe Doerkson and Chael Sonnen. This fight was scheduled for WEC 33, but Paulo Filho cancelled the fight after deciding to enter rehab after being overcome with an addiction problem. Paulo Filho will be looking to put this fight on the ground, with six victories coming by way of submission. Chael Sonnen is easily one of the most underrated fights in MMA, having fought Jason Miller, Trevor Prangley, Akihiro Gono, Forrest Griffin, Jason Lambert, Jeremy Horn, Terry Martin, Renato Sobral and Bryan Baker. This will only be the second fight of 2008 for Chael Sonnen, so conditioning may play a factor in this title fight. Chael Sonnen is a fighter known for taking fights the distance, with ten career victories coming by decision.

My Prediction: Paulo Filho

WEC Featherweight Title Fight
“The California Kid” Urijah Faber (21-1-0) *Champion* vs. Mike Brown (19-4-0)

Easily the biggest draw in WEC history, Urijah Faber, has yet to even have his title reign threatened by challengers like Jens Pulver, Jeff Curran and Chance Farrar. In fact, the only loss Urijah Faber suffered was to UFC veteran Tyson Griffin at Gladiator Challenge 42 by knockout. Urijah Faber started off his professional MMA career on an eight fight undefeated streak and is currently riding a thirteen fight winning streak. Urijah Faber is a fighter known for finishing fights, with only three of twenty two fights going to a decision. Urijah Faber will be looking to put this fight on the ground, with ten career victories coming by way of submission. Mike Brown has seemingly come out of nowhere to earn a WEC Featherweight Title opportunity, which he got after defeating former top contender Jeff Curran at WEC 34. Mike Brown is currently on a seven fight winning streak, with one of those victories coming over Strikeforce Lightweight Title top contender Yves Edwards. Mike Brown has also fought once in the UFC at UFC 47, which resulted in a loss to top lightweight fighter Genki Sudo. Mike Brown will be looking to put this fight on the ground, with eleven career victories coming by submission.

My Prediction: Urijah Faber
