Zach’s Wrestling How to Guide:
Chapter 1 – How to Reintroduce Christian to the WWE
Hey everybody. Welcome to the first edition of Zach’s Wrestling How to Guide. Every week I will be looking at a different subject in the world of wrestling, giving my input into how I think it could be improved or more interesting.
This week in the wrestling universe has been crazy, with the WWE releasing several stars, including some of my personal favorites like Paul London and Elijah Burke. The big news though is that they are on the verge of resigning Captain Charisma himself, Christian. The way I see it, they have several options on how to reintroduce him to today’s WWE audience.
a) The shocking re-debut, a la Matt Hardy or the Big Show. Would I like to see him spring up at the Cena-Jericho match at Survivor Series and cost one of them the match? Sure, but it probably won’t happen due to the build up for Cena’s return. The shocking debut worked for Hardy because he had a feud built in place with Edge, and it worked this year for the Big Show because of the feud he had in place with Floyd Mayweather. So it would be cool to see, but I don’t think they will go through this option.
b) The slow build, a la Chris Jericho and Jeff Hardy. To me this seems like the more viable option, as it would allow for the WWE to showcase his greater hits and heavily promote his debut. They should use his old theme music with a montage of his accomplishments in ladder matches and charismatic moments. This would make his debut more in the vain of Hardy than Jericho though, since Jericho’s re debut never mentioned his name leading up to his appearance on RAW. Like Hardy though, he could come straight back and interact with his former partner, Edge.
When should he be brought back though? I’m not sure if TNA contracts have a 90 day non compete clause, but I have never really heard of them doing so, meaning he very well could come back at the Survivor Series. Does the WWE then wait until the Royal Rumble to showcase him? I doubt it just because it would overshadow what looks to be the debut of the masked wrestler Dos Caras.
So, if I were the WWE, here is how I would bring back Christian.
Step 1 – Slowly reintroduce him via Smackdown vignettes post Survivor Series
Step 2 – Bring back Edge and have him feud with main eventers, i.e. HHH and Jeff Hardy, leading to a triple threat match at Armageddon
Step 3 – Have him return at the pay per view, helping the returning Rated R Superstar recapture the heavyweight title from Triple H.
From there, the WWE has a launchpad to jump off with him. Give him a strong showing at the Rumble. Let him go nuts at Money in the Bank. And how cool would it be to see later a return bout of Edge and Christian vs The Hardys in a ladder match? Hell even if they want they could resign Tomko and realign the two of them. Possibilities are endless.
Stay tuned for next week’s chapter, how to mainstream ROH…
