PREVIEWING WEC 38: VARNER VS. CERRONE - THE TELEVISED CARD

By David Tees on 1/25/2009 2:08 PM

WEC Featherweight Division Fight
Jose Aldo (12-1-0) vs. Rolando Perez (4-1-1)

This could be the breakout fight for Jose Aldo in the WEC, as he is undefeated in the promotion with victories over Alexandre Franca Nogueira and Jonathan Brookins. Prior to coming to the WEC last year, Jose Aldo was a veteran of the Pancrase and Shooto Brazil promotions. The lone loss thus far in Jose Aldo’s career came to Luciano Azevedo at the Jungle Fight 5 event in 2005. Jose Aldo is currently riding a five fight winning streak and hasn’t lost a professional fight in over three years. Jose Aldo will be looking to use his striking skills to gain the victory, with seven career victories coming by knockout. Rolando Perez will be making his WEC debut in this fight, but all six of his previous fights have all taken place in the Total Combat promotion. The lone loss in Rolando Perez’s career came to Angelo Catsouras at Total Combat 13, while he holds victories over Raymond Gomez, Jamie Fisher, Kenneth Mendoza and Nick Alvarado. Rolando Perez will be looking to put this fight on the ground, with three previous victories coming by way of submission.

My Prediction: Jose Aldo

WEC Welterweight Division Fight
Danillo “Indio” Villefort (8-2-0) vs. Mike Campbell (4-0-0)

Danillo Villefort will be making his WEC debut in this fight, but he is an International Fight League veteran and has defeated UFC veteran Mike Massenzio in the promotion. Danillo Villefort is also a veteran of the Minotauro Fights promotion, where he defeated Alexandre Lima and Ricardo Dinamite. Danillo Villefort is bring a four fight winning streak into the battle, having not lost a fight in a year and a half. Danillo Villefort will be looking to put this fight on the ground, with five victories coming by way of submission. Mike Campbell is an undefeated fighter who is also making his WEC debut, but he is a veteran of the Reality Fights promotion. During his time in Reality Fights, Mike Campbell defeated Jason Dublin, Justin Hammerturn and Brendan Hoxie. Mike Campbell will be looking to use his striking skills to gain the victory, with three victories coming by knockout.

My Prediction: Danillo Villefort

WEC Featherweight Division Fight
“The California Kid” Urijah Faber (21-2-0) vs. “Lil’ Evil” Jens Pulver (22-10-1)

Urijah Faber is the former WEC Featherweight Champion, who lost his title to Mike Brown at WEC 36, which also ended his thirteen fight win streak.. Urijah Faber has already defeated Jens Pulver in the WEC at WEC 34, where Urijah Faber got the victory by unanimous decision. In his long MMA career, Urijah Faber has fought some of the best in MMA like Tyson Griffin, Charles Bennett, Charlie Valencia, Jeff Curran, Jens Pulver and Mike Brown. Besides Mike Brown, the only other fighter to defeat Urijah Faber is UFC veteran Tyson Griffin, which happened at Gladiator Challenge 42. Urijah Faber will be looking to put this fight on the ground, with ten victories coming by way of submission. Jens Pulver is a longtime veteran of both the UFC, WEC and PRIDE promotions and is a former UFC Lightweight Champion. Jens Pulver is currently on a two fight losing streak in the WEC, losing to Urijah Faber at WEC 34 and Leonard Garcia at WEC 36. In fact, the year 2008 was the first time in Jens Pulver’s career that he didn’t win at least one MMA fight in a calendar year. Jens Pulver will be looking to use his striking skills to gain the victory, with thirteen career victories coming by knockout.

My Prediction: Urijah Faber

WEC Lightweight Title Fight
Jamie “C-4” Varner (15-2-0) *Champion* vs. Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (9-0-0)

Jamie Varner became the WEC Lightweight Champion at WEC 32 by defeating Rob McCullough by TKO, then defended the title for the first time over Marcus Hicks at WEC 35. Jamie Varner is undefeated in WEC competition, with a victory over Sherron Leggett at WEC 29, to go along with the other two previously mentioned victories. Besides the WEC, Jamie Varner is also a veteran of the UFC, Rage In The Cage, King Of The Cage and World Freestyle Fighting. Jamie Varner is entering the fight on a four fight winning streak and hasn’t lost a fight in over two and a half years. Jamie Varner will be looking to put this fight on the ground, with nine career victories coming by submission. Donald Cerrone is an undefeated fighter, who already holds WEC victories over Kenneth Alexander, Danny Castillo and Rob McCullough. Before coming to the WEC, Donald Cerrone was a veteran of the Ring Of Fire promotion, where he holds a victory over UFC veteran Nate Mohr. Donald Cerrone began his professional MMA career in 2006 and has kept his undefeated streak alive for nearly three years. Donald Cerrone will be looking to put this fight on the ground, with eight career victories coming by submission.

My Prediction: Jamie Varner
