THIS WEEK IN WRESTLING

By Zach Levine on 4/16/2009 10:22 AM

Hey everybody. I’m Zach Levine and you may remember me from such columns as Zach’s How To Guide. [Points to those who get that Simpsons reference] Well now that the fine folks at pwinsider published as many columns as years I’ve been alive, I figured it’s time to try out a new format for my columns. I will go through the world of wrestling and discuss ten subjects which I think gained the most importance this week. So let’s kick this off and see how it goes.

1.     1. Came out of the draft feeling pretty underwhelmed, not gonna lie. HHH was really the only big name who moved, and wasn’t he a RAW star always anyways? I thought for sure that Cena would move over to Smackdown, but all this did was guarantee Edge wins their match at Backlash so Smackdown has a title themselves.

2.      2. Speaking of Edge-Cena, word has it that Cena may soon take some time off for another movie. I’m predicting that Edge beats him for the title at Backlash, and then a certain Money In The Bank winner calls out the Rated R Superstar to take him on at Judgement Day in his hometown of Chicago.

3.     3. Hate to go three Cena references in a row, but did anyone catch the huge shot the WWE took at Mr. Kennedy…Kennedy during the draft show? Cena told Swagger how stupid he was for being the All American American, then bashed repeating words for a good minute.  I thought this would have been the perfect opportunity to Kennedy getting drafted and challenging either Cena or Swagger, but it ended up just being a shot at the man from Green Bay. Here’s hoping he can bounce back from this.

4.     4. I’ll make the call now…let’s say over the summer, that new Navy wrestler that Rhyno is training turns on him. Rhyno complains about lack of respect for his teacher, same old storyline comes out of TNA. Writing is already on the wall there.

5.     5. What the hell happened to THE Brian Kendrick? Anyone remember in October he was WWE Champion? Go back and try to think, it was that cool scramble match. Now he gets obliterated by Kane on RAW. I hate to say this since I’m a big fan of Kendrick’s, but last time someone got beat up that badly by Kane it was the Boogeyman, and he was future endeavored literally hours after that match aired. Let’s hope Kendrick picks it up.

6.     6. Personally I think the biggest development to come out of today’s online draft was the drafting of DH Smith and Natalya to ECW full time. I know they broke up at FCW, but can you say reincarnation of the Hart Foundation?

7.     7. Um so apparently I missed the memo in TNA that the only female heels are allowed to be the Beautiful People. Why are Awesome Kong and Raisha getting face pushes? They need to establish an equal balance of faces and heels in their once dominant knockouts division.

8.     8. I guess the boat was missed on this already as Beer Money Inc. is now a dominant tag team, but I’m still holding out hope for an AMW reunion, coupled with a Robert Roode main event push. Bringing back Harris would just be the icing on the cake for TNA. They love to bash the WWE any chance they get, why not take potshots at them for the infamous Braden Walker idea?

9.     9. Big fan of Matt Striker’s work on ECW. He is the future of color commentating and has actually become a big part of why I personally watch the show. But did he seriously call Josh Matthews’ nosebleed a “nasal menstruation?” Good lord there Striker, easy. But kudos to Matthews for breaking the WWE’s policy on blood during telecasts. If they show a picture of it on their website, does it have to be in black and white?

10. 10. Sad week this week as one of my favorite tag teams came to a screeching halt, but Miz and Morrison deserve to be upper mid card heels and fight on their own. I rank them a six on the breakup scale, with one being Eugene turning on Hacksaw Jim Duggan and ten being Shawn Michaels superkicking Marty Janetty and throwing him through the barber shop window.
