THIS WEEK IN WRESTLING
By Zach Levine on 5/23/2009 9:47 AM
Welcome back one and all to This Week In Wrestling. My New York Mets stink, my Jets Brett Favre jersey is collecting dust in my closet, and I don't even want to begin ranting on the Knicks and Rangers, so lets get to something that doesn't disappoint me...wrestling! Let's get to it -
1. Vince McMahon vs. The Denver Nuggets
Ah boy. Vinny Mac sure is promoting the hell out of this rivalry huh? I feel bad for those in Denver who had tix to RAW, and this week's Monday Night Raw sure will be interesting. He's promising the Lakers vs. Nuggets. Something tells me the Nuggets will consist of Golddust, Hornswoggle, Festus, Great Khali, and Big Dick Johnson. Plus that interview Coach had with Vince on ESPN was crazy to watch, mainly because Vince refused to acknowledge his former whipping boy at all.
2. Extreme Rules
Well with Judgment Day right behind us, I have a strange feeling Extreme Rules should be renamed Rematch Rules. So far every match on the card is the same as the one prior, except with stipulations. If this is really going to be the case, I can't see this PPV making it another year.
3. The Hart Trilogy
It's funny, I really didn't like this past week's Monday Night Raw. The only part that interested me in the least however was the promo for Smith-Finlay on ECW. Solid match between the two, my only complaint being Smith's finisher and the fact that the match was 80% restholds. Next week can we give Smith a squash, followed by a promo interrupted by Finlay. Just seems like the next logical step for the promising group.
4. Lack of heels on RAW
One of my biggest problems on RAW is the current state of the heel division. We have Randy Orton at the top, followed by Big Show, followed by...Miz? I don't count Matt Hardy as he is still wrestling injured, but either William Regal needs to get a sizable push soon or Batista is going to need to turn sooner rather than later.
5. Foreign TNA Heels
Jumping over to Orlando for a second, what's up with every foreign person on the roster being a heel? Bashir, No Limit, Kyoshi, British Invasion. I understand their going for a formula here, but I think Team Canada basically took that idea a while back. Oh and what was up with quick cuts on the British Invasion beat down of Team 3D. There were five quick vids put together of the Brits beating down 3D. No fluid video, just looked like it was pulled straight out of a video game.
6. Bobby Lashley
Rumors also speculate that TNA has yet to come to an agreement with Mr. Lashley, thereby not putting him on television in recent weeks. I want to compare this situation to what happened with Hulk Hogan in TNA, but at least Hogan took a bump with everything that went down.
7. Zack Ryder
Just want to say...what the hell was that? His theme song sounded like the WWE took a random song from an alt rock station and played it midway through, and don't get me started on the pants. Wait I know what happened. Hey Curt Hawkins, I know you're not on tv much, but just because Ryder's getting a push on ECW doesnt mean you can cut one of his pant legs off on his wrestling gear. Not cool man, not cool.
8. John Morrison
Awesome work out of Mr. Morrison over on Smackdown. His feud with Shelton is great and they even found a way to make Charlie Haas useful, so kudos to them. Two things stuck out in that match for me. 1 - Starship Pain will win the slammy for finisher of the year. 2 - What was up with that 360 clothesline he did? Loved the innovation, but it was like he flipped and had to think of something to do afterwards. Just a little confusing to me.
9. Men vs. Women in TNA
Hey so a while back if I remember correctly an edict was issued that barred men and women from fighting each other on TNA. So...Kong vs. Kip? In a competitive matchup none the less? I guess it worked as a storyline purpose, but so help me if by the end of the year we end up seeing Kong vs. Joe. Tread carefully there TNA.
10. Random Thoughts...
A. Recently I spoke about Umaga needing an interpreter or something. Looks like the WWE went another way and someone taught the big boy some English. You'll see what I mean Friday.
B. The WWE however is doing something good with this Cena-Miz feud. At this rate, I hope Cena gives him an Attitude Adjustment off of something very high. Least Miz is being a cutthroat heel here.
C. Brace yourselves, bout to say something nice bout TNA here...Matt Morgan is really impressing over there and I'm hopeful that he will be one of those big stars that makes it there and rubs the WWEs face in it for releasing him.
D. Female Monster's Ball with Daffney, Taylor Wilde, .... I guess ODB and Sojo finish it. Surprised that they're doing this without Kong however, felt like she'd be a natural. And the last Monster's Ball TNA had involved a flaming table and Abyss, so I doubt this will be as violent.
