Dear Mr. Cena,
I am not “personally ignorant”. I am a die-hard wrestling fan and have been for over 25 years. Like you, I have been defending the WWE product for pretty much my entire life. First off by trying to convince people that it was “real” because when I was younger I did not know any better. As I got older and understood that it was all a show, I still respected the athletiscm of the performers and enjoyed watching to see what would happen next.
Through the late 90’s and early 2000’s I was a very proud wrestling fan, watching all of the people that thought it was stupid and “fake” coming up to me and asking me about the show and wanting to hear my opinions because I had spent al those years previously trying to force-feed it down their throats. True, they were band-wagon jumpers but I did not care people were finally starting to see the greatness in a show/product that I have loved all of my life.
Then Vince bought WCW…. What should have been an amazing storyline that could have gone on for years, he puts together an Invasion angle that made no sense and of course put over the WWE as quickly as he possibly could. By doing this he killed all of the momentum they had and basically alienated all of the loyal WCW fans which he should have been trying to keep and nurture into WWE fans. Looking back at the combined ratings of Raw and Nitro coming in at the high 9’s and occasionally low 10’s I guarantee if he had of put a better effort into making it a successful angle instead of stroking his own ego we would probably be in a lot better position then we are in now. I’m ignorant though so I guess I should not remember or bring any of that up. I honestly thought wrestling was going to die or at least be put on life support and it was until…….
2005 the first ECW One Night Stand, it was probably the most entertaining 3 hours I have ever spent watching wrestling. It had everything that was missing since the attitude era. It had suspense, intrigue, phenomenal wrestling in ring action and of course gratuitous violence. It made sense and even my wife who hates wrestling thought it was fun! Fast forward to June 13 2006 the date ECW on Sci-Fi debuted I think the show gained a 2.7 or so rating and it was decent but you could tell that it was WWE’ized. The great rating it got the first week quickly piddled down and is barely watchable for the most part. Your buddy Vince could have made a fortune by giving ECW its own identity but nope he had to get his paws on it and destroy it into something that was worse than Heat. You still want to say I am the one that is ignorant?
John, let us now talk about the current product. You were once a fan weren’t you? Nothing makes sense anymore. There is no intrigue, no suspense and it is and this is so hard for me to actually say…….boring! There I said it the show is garbage and I find it hard to stay awake watching it. Nothing really interests me anymore. Watching you try to be the Rock in your promos and then using childish phrases is just ridiculous. You are not The Rock, you never will be. All of the wrestlers that have been successful have always said that it is them in the character just with the volume turned up. Who are you? I liked it when you rapped and had fun in the ring. I enjoyed that it seemed like you were being yourself as you were a young guy and seemed pretty cool. Now all of a sudden you are Superman that uses dick and fart jokes to entertain us? Don’t get me wrong I appreciate all of the work you do for the WWE and it’s fans and I definitely appreciate how much your in-ring work has improved but you still in my eyes do not have the “it” factor that The Rock, Austin, Foley, Taker etc have. There is definitely room for you on the roster as the kids and women seem to love you. Maybe a heel turn would help I am not sure as I am just an ignorant fan.
I will not bash your movies because I think they were ok for what they were, decent action movies. Straight to DVD is the way to go John, save your boss a couple bucks next time.
Believe it or not I am not a “Cena Hater” I have appreciated some of your matches but don’t start calling fans ignorant start looking at what is wrong with the product. Why are we only getting mid 3’s in the ratings? What happened to all of the fans from the 90’s?
They are still out there and will come back when the show is entertaining and fun again. Usually on Tuesday mornings I find myself talking to guys at work that used to be fans and like to keep up but refuse to invest the 2 hours to watch it. They came to me today and asked “how was the show last night? Anything cool happen? For the first time ever I said the show was garbage and a giant waste of my night. I never thought I would say that but I am fed up. The talent is there but it is not being used properly.
There are so many things wrong with the current product that I will not get into it but if you cannot even entertain a die-hard fan that is grasping at anything to hold on to the passion he has for the product then obviously something is wrong.
I am begging you to give me something to talk about next Tuesday morning at the water cooler. Fight for the fans. Fight for someone who last year spent easily $5000 on your product.
Or are you the one that is “personally ignorant”?
