PWINSIDERXTRA Q & A: YOKOZUNA, FLAIR IN WWF, IMPLANTS, BLURRING LOGOS AND MORE

By Dave Scherer on 6/24/2009 10:00 AM

How would you rate Yokozuna as a worker back in his day? He seemed like a pretty good big man to me, and I remember when he died, Bret Hart writing about how safe he was and never hurting him despite throwing all that weight around.

Yoko was an amazing worker given his size and weight.  I would rate him very highly for his body type.  He was quick, agile and always in control.  The Banzai Drop could have literally killed people if he wasn't the worker he was.  It's a shame he passed so soon.

I was watching the Four Horsemen DVD and a few people commented they thought Ric Flair's initial WWE run was not as successful as they had hoped for and that they suspect Vince ruined him on purpose because he was successful on his own. I know he did that to people like Dusty Rhodes and Harley Race and more recently Booker T, but I don't think Vince ruined Ric Flair in 1991 nor do I think his run then was as unsuccessful as Bischoff and JJ Dillon claimed. He did win the title twice then and was pushed as a top guy. Plus, he wasn't given some stupid gimmicky crap like Dusty and Harley, he was allowed to be who he always was, which is the biggest compliment Vince could give somebody. I think Vince was a Ric Flair fan, because I know from the McMahon DVD that he admired a guy named Dr. Jerry Graham in his youth who sounded very similar to Ric. How do you guys feel about his initial WWE run?

All things considered, I think Flair got a decent run during his time in the WWF.  Like you said, he did hold the belt and he did work some great matches.  He didn't have to wear polka dots or a crown.  And given that he was the face of the competition at the time he jumped to Vince, he definitely could have been buried, plus he was already in his forties at the time.  So, I would call it a solid run for Flair.

You likely won't be able to answer this question directly (or name names) for obvious reasons, but it can't hurt to try. Is it an unwritten standard procedure now for WWE Divas to get breast implants? It just seems like most Divas have "the shape" suspect with unnatural breasts. This also begs the question that if this is in fact the case, isn't it dangerous to bop around a wrestling ring with implants?

I think it's fair to say that every lady who becomes a diva has eyes and sees what her peers look like.  Management is smart enough to not tell the girls to get the implants because that could open them up to a lawsuit, but the girls have eyes, just like we do.  Rarely, a Stacy Keibler will come along that says "I don't want them" but if someone else feels a way, they better have a super marketable asset like Stacy did if they want to get pushed.

Yes, implants do burst at times.  They are not meant to take a pounding and occasionally when they do, the women have to get replacements when they break.

Isn't blurring all the WWF logos in all their footage more costly, both money-wise and time-wise, than to just pay the World Wildlife Fund for the usage of it?

I touched on this question recently.  Yes, it's costly.  Yes, it makes for a ton of work.  But, in order to be able to get the rights to use the scratch logo, they have to make a deal with the WWF.  The last time the Fed made a deal with the Fund, it didn't end well.  You know that Vince holds a grudge and the Fund obviously does too since they took the Fed to court in the first place.  The only way I could see this working is if Vince wrote a huge check to the Fund for the rights and my guess is he would just rather pay his people to blur out the logo than pay someone who has already beaten him once in court and caused him to change his company's name.  His only other hope would be if the original decision got overturned in the British court.

Do you think that Ring of Honor will start touring down here in the south? Like in Tampa, Florida? (cause I would like to see them live just once.)

If a situation comes up where it will be a good financial move for them to do so, yes.  They are very smart about only running shows in places where they feel comfortable that they can draw and generate revenue.  They don't want to do a big money-losing tour and there is always the unknown before you run an area.  As of now, your only options are to buy the DVDs at www.rohwrestling.com or watch the PPVs.
