GOT FIGHT? THE 50 ZEN PRINCIPLES OF HAND-TO-FACE COMBAT BY FORREST GRIFFIN & ERICH KRAUSS BOOK REVIEW

By David Tees on 7/3/2009 4:23 PM
At first glance, Got Fight?, looks like an autobiography of former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and UFC Ultimate Fighter 1 Champion Forrest Griffin. However, instead of getting an autobiography on Forrest Griffin, the readers will gain insight from Forrest Griffin on things like embarking on an MMA career, proper training, health, relationships and various other topics.

Forrest Griffin delves into great detail about what it takes to become a professional fighter, not only in the UFC, but in any professional MMA organization out there. Forrest Griffin uses his own life experience to site the positives and negatives about becoming a professional fighter. Forrest Griffin even shares a scary story about a fighter who competed in a low level MMA event and suffered a seriously bad broken leg.

Following the severe leg injury, the promoter ended up taking the injured fighter and tossing him out onto the streets without even calling any form of medical personnel. As much as Forrest Griffin discusses the brutality of the sport of MMA, Forrest Griffin also shines a light at the good moments in MMA and what it takes to achieve them.

Besides discussing the physical aspect of being an MMA fighter, Forrest Griffin also delves into the mental part of being an MMA fighter. Forrest Griffin discusses various techniques of calming your emotions down and what kind of mindset to enter when both training for and competing in an MMA fight. Forrest Griffin also talks about what kind of personal relationships you should be looking for with women when competing in MMA, discussing the good and bad of the relationships.

Forrest Griffin then goes into detail about the business side of things as a fighter, starting with picking the proper business manager to handle the financial situation. Forrest Griffin then talks about selecting the right school to do your training at and what a potential fighter should look for when making the choice. Forrest Griffin even goes into great detail about how to choose the proper corner men to coach you during your fight and what methods of motivation a fighter should be looking for.

Forrest Griffin then dedicates two separate sections of the book to give photo and text demonstrations on various methods of fighting in MMA. Everything from a proper stance, to escaping submissions, to finding your striking range, to applying submissions to properly positioning yourself on your back and everything else MMA related is gone over in the two sections.

Besides covering most of the different aspects involved in mixed martial arts, Forrest Griffin also discusses real life topics that have nothing to do with MMA. For example, Forrest Griffin uses a ton of humor to discuss recycling, proper driving etiquette, stress, your love life, alcohol consumption and anything else you can think of.

There is also little subsections throughout the book called “dick in a box”, where other people discuss aspects of the book written by Forrest Griffin. People labeled as Big John, Luke and Adam Singer give various insights to topics discussed by author Forrest Griffin. Luke even talks about a time he played quarters with Forrest Griffin and how Forrest Griffin would not only consume the cup of liquor that the quarter bounced into, but the quarters as well.

Overall, anybody looking to pick up this book thinking that it is an autobiography about Forrest Griffin will be disappointed. However, if you are a person into the lifestyle of MMA and possibly interested in becoming an MMA fighter, this book will be right up your alley.

This book is available on the PWInsider Amazon store for just $15.28, which is $10.00 less than I paid for it at my local bookstore!
