THIS WEEK IN WRESTLING
By Zach Levine on 7/11/2009 11:16 AM
Hey everybody! The summer months are upon us, usually the doldrums for wrestling, but let's see what we can discuss this week. Here we go...
The Million Dollar Raw
1. Great RAW this past week, cannot speak of it highly enough. Dibiase was a fantastic GM and I think the person who created the guest host idea must be patting themselves on the back Barry Horowitz style right now. When this whole revolving door GM idea is done, something tells me we won't be seeing the last of the elder Dibiase on RAW. Virgil on the other hand will most likely go back to what he does best...shilling merchandise at the Freehold Raceway Mall.
Enough with the accents Booker
2. Best match on TNA Impact this week was the Homicide-Doug Williams 30 sec ladder match...NOT! [Sry, getting amped up for Bruno and have Borat on the mind]. Best match was the Guns-Beer Money. My only problem was Booker and Steiner on commentary. Steiner was actually subdued this week, but Booker good lord. Shush. Great action in the ring completely taken away by some guy screaming Jimmy James Storm the entire match. Calm the hell down there buddy.
Abraham Washington...Oy
3. This is getting a bit much now. Poor guy gets put in that talk show gimmick and its gonna be bad news. I mean this isn't Braden Walker rough, but we're nearing it. Can we please try to phase him out of this gimmick and lead him to be just like a heel manager or GM or something other than a Jimmy Kimmel ripoff?
The Return of Big Zeke
4. What a great squash match on ECW this week. This dude tore his opponent apart. My only problem...finisher. Yes I know that he had it before Sheamus debuted last week, but now you have two guys with very similar finishers. Give Zeke a powerbomb or something, or have Sheamus steal back the Fiery Red Hand from Kozlov and have Kozlov go back to his headbut/fallaway slam.
The End of the Beautiful People?
5. Why tease a breakup between Velvet and Angelina? They are actually one of the better acts on TNA lately, and I know Velvet began to yell at Angelina for leaving her with Tara, but c'mon. So many random turns [ahem Colons], can we just have a cohesive group?
Whats going on with Smackdown?
6. Edge is badly hurt, Hardy may leave in a couple weeks, and Smackdown has a whole new situation on their plate. Your gonna have a Mysterio-Ziggler feud, Kane-Khali, and Jericho/tag partner vs. everyone else. Punk is left with Morrison, Truth, and...perhaps a returning deadman???
Jericho's tag possibilities
7. Hate to see Edge go down, but this opens up a hell of a lot of possibilities for Jericho's tag. Doesn't look like they are going this way, but be cool to see him team with Ziggler. Looking at other options, tag him with Knox, or go outward and maybe use the Miz or Kendrick in this role. Could be pretty sweet.
Edge Return
8. One more Edge post just because we won't hear from him in a long time. Here is my bold idiotic prediction of the week. Royal Rumble 2010 comes down to Jericho, Edge, HHH and Mysterio. Edge and Jericho team up to toss HHH and Rey, for Edge to turn on Jericho and turn face at the same time. Thats right, face Edge 2010 Rumble winner.
Jerry "The Mayor" Lawler
9. Will it happen? Debatable. Sure would like to see Andy Kaufman's opponent take him on haha. But you imagine he leaves the broadcast booth to run? I say Striker goes straight to RAW, and ECW becomes the Matthews-Abraham show.
Random News and Notes
a. Thinking how ironic it would be if the Punk-Hardy match is Jeff's last for a lil while. Means that Punks last two feuds would be the swan songs for both guys. Let's try not to make this a recurring theme, least not til he faces Khali.
b. Nearly a year to the day of my favorite wrestling era, The Braden Walker era everybody. Celebrate by watching some Youtube classics will you?
c. Btw, Dreamer's speech on Washington's show made it official this week, the WWE looks at ECW as the place where stars come to grow, not a permanent playground. So I wouldn't be getting too comfortable Shaemus or Yoshi.
d. My far out prediction for RAW's GM this week [a new theme on this column as long as they keep having it] - Sacha Baron Cohen. Sure it won't happen, but least it would let him promote Bruno and app he is a wrestling fan. Be kind of cool to see, you never know what may happen.
Be well everybody!
