GREENFIELD REVIEW: TNA GENESIS PREVIEW

By Charlie Greenfield on 1/16/2010 12:02 PM

In this week’s Greenfield Review, I will be previewing the first PPV of the year for TNA Wrestling. This edition will also look at the previous TNA Impact episode, looking at the positives and the negatives coming for the show.  This is going to be a big weekend coming up with lots more surprises coming from TNA, and the PPV is a show that cannot be missed if you want to see two of the best wrestlers in the world today, AJ Styles and Kurt Angle.

This week’s TNA Impact was a really good show is terms of storytelling, but it did lack a really good wrestling match. I thought the debut of the new tag team called Generation Me was very good and thought there match between The Motor City Machine Guns was a good way for them to debut in TNA. I think this was a competitive 5 minute match, with lots of high flying action. The big problem is though, what is next for these two tag teams because the tag team division is already congested and with only a certain amount of TV time available, I am worried about they may just be lost in the pile after a real good debut. I hope these two tag teams have more matches against each other and think it would be a real good idea for TNA to create a new tag division called the X division tag team division.

The show did lack wrestling matches and that was because of a lot of storytelling was used in the show to try and get a PPV line up for Genesis all in one show. The reason for this is because they have concentrated more on last week, when they went head to head with Monday Night Raw on January 4th. I liked the interaction between AJ Styles and Kurt Angle because it was basic old school booking and made real sense. I think the way they set up the rematch for the TNA World Title at Genesis was very well done and played out well, where Kurt Angle feels he only needs one more shot to beat AJ Styles and both agree that they will have yet another classic match.

I did not like the match between Desmond Wolfe and Samoa Joe, even though the victory was very useful for Desmond Wolfe, but it did not do Samoa Joe any favours because it was only a 3 minute match and Samoa Joe be jobbed, when he has a future world title match does not make any sense. Desmond Wolfe did need the win, after last week losing a silly match on free TV. But I like the feud between The Pope and Desmond Wolfe.

I thought the way they had the interaction between Sean Morley and Daniels was alright, but was not something that really got over well. Sean Morley character has gone real stale because he has used the same gimmick for 13 years or more. I did like how Daniels was against TNA bringing in new talent. I think Daniels is a good heel, but I am worried about his future and will be interesting to see where he is going to fit in TNA in the future.

The use of the Band (Scott Hall, Kevin Nash and Sean Waltman), was not overly done and thought that they were used quite well. I think the question is how long Scott Hall and Sean Waltman will actually last in TNA. But I do think the storyline where they have come in to try and bring back the glory days of the NWO to have another party is quite good, teasing Hulk Hogan to whether he joins up with them. My only problem is, this has been done too many times and if only done short term it should be ok. Eric Bischoff was great on the show!

I did think the show had a lot of stuff going on and was quite hard to remember everything that happened on the show because it was going at fast pace to try and get every match set up for the TNA Genesis PPV, but also the fact it was hard to get the information across, about what they were telling. The backstage scene with Hulk Hogan and Jeff Jarrett was the best segment on the show because it made real sense what they were on about and cleared up a few things that people wanted to know about why Hulk Hogan has come to TNA?  I think it will be interesting to see where this goes and if this could lead to a power struggle between Jeff Jarrett and Hulk Hogan.

The main event match was just a quick main event match to try and get Tomko out of the storyline with AJ Styles. I am pleased they kept AJ Styles strong leading into the PPV, but also they teased a bit of tension between AJ Styles and Kurt Angle. I hope they don’t turn AJ Styles heel and make him a bad guy. I think the use of Ric Flair was good because he put over AJ Styles, which is what we want and it could lead to a future match between them, even though it would not be good to see Ric Flair in the ring in 2010.

Overall the show got a thumb up and getting 7 out of 10, not a bad show. I think getting a rating of a 1.3 is really good, especially coming from the huge Monday Night show last week. It will be interesting if the fans come back next week.

This Sunday TNA has its first PPV of the year; the build up for the show has been hurt since it has not been the main point of promoting because they have had the January 4th show to promote as well. But the line up for the show does look really good and I predict the show will be a good PPV.  This Sunday they are also teasing a new wrestler coming to TNA, I think that the person debuting for TNA is going to be Mr Kennedy, but also think TNA may bring in someone else like a Goldberg or Rob Van Dam. It is one of those teases that have got people talking!

The Current Line Up:

TNA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH
KURT’S ANGLE LAST SHOT AT AJ STYLE’S WORLD TITLE IN 2010

AJ Styles (champion) vs. Kurt Angle

The debut of the newest major TNA Superstar Acquisition - who will it be?!

Beer Money, Inc. vs. Kevin Nash and Scott Hall

“The Monster” Abyss vs. “The Boss” Bobby Lashley

TNA TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

The British Invasion (champs) vs. “The Blueprint” Matt Morgan and Hernandez

TNA KNOCKOUTS CHAMPIONSHIP
2 OUT OF 3 FALLS

ODB (champion) vs. Tara

TNA X-DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP
Amazing Red vs. (to be announced that night)

Sean Morley vs. Daniels

The Pope vs. Desmond Wolfe

I think the show should deliver some real good matches. The main event match is likely going to be another classic match between AJ Styles and Kurt Angle for the TNA World Title, but not sure how this match will finish. I hope AJ keeps the Title, but think Kurt Angle will win it as this is his last chance in 2010, while AJ Styles is Champion.  I think Desmond Wolfe Vs The Pope will be a good match and if given enough time could be the best mid card match of the night. Sean Morley Vs Daniels is a match that could well, but Daniels needs to go over in this match because if he loses, it could be a sign that he is going to be not used much in the future.  Bobby Lashley Vs Abyss is a match that is not really going to do much apart from too big guys going head to head. I see Bobby Lashley winning the match because they seem to be building him up as a top heel and need to keep him strong for a future match with Kurt Angle.

Matt Morgan and Hernandez look likely to win the TNA World Tag Team Titles. The British Invasion group has gone a bit stale and have really become an afterthought lately, so expecting them to lose the titles. I am not looking forward to Tara Vs ODB because the feud has gone on long enough really and the matches between the two have not been really exciting. I see Tara winning the TNA Knockout Title again.

Beer Money Vs Kevin Nash and Scott Hall is not going to  be a classic match, but it is the first time since Kevin Nash and Scott Hall have teamed together on PPV for 5 years, so from that stand point it is good. I think if Beer Money win, it will be great for them to beat a former well known tag team to help establish them further in the future. The X division match between Amazing Red and an opponent to be decided is going to be a good match because I think this could be the debut of Brian Kendrick in TNA.
