AUSTRALIAN WRESTLING SUPERSHOW IN ADELAIDE LIVE REPORT

By Scott McGinn on 1/25/2010 7:33 AM
Wrestling Supershow Adelaide Saturday January 23rd

Golden Grove Rec Centre Theatre was the venue for what promised to be a cracker of a show. The card had been building for a few months, and now we where ready to rock.

There where representatives from across Australia and New Zealand here, and a not quite full house (few empty spots but about 250 in) where primed.

Match 1
Shark v Blue Blood

Shark is the technician and Blue Blood the flyer in this one and it should be a good opener. Blue Blood actually takes it to Shark on the mat early showing he to has some mat skills as well.

Good back and forth action as momentum switches between the two. Finally Blue Blood pulls out some aerial moves catching Shark out.

Seth Maxx comes down to ringside to try some interferance, but as he is standing outside the ring Blue Blood lets fly knocking him down.

But Maxx still manages to interfer and the bell rings the match declared a no-contest.

Rating: 3/5 (Yeah I would have liked to see these two get a clean finish, but it was a good match that made sense with Blue Blood showing he could mat wrestle just as well as Shark)

Match 2
Sara Jay v Aurora

Two of Australias best women wrestlers. Sara Jay having just returned from Puerto Rico, so I'm sure we can look forward to a review of the tour from Steve Corino who would have heard about it from someone, who heard from someone , who spoke to someone else... and you get the picture.

Ok so it wasn't a contender for a Dave Meltzer five star match. Sara Jay was a little off with some of her moves, but again the match told a story, and made sense.

The end came with a face plant from Sara Jay who scored the pin fall over her long time rival for the title of Australias best female Wrestler.

Rating: 2/5 (can't ignore the mistakes, but they both tried their hardest and stuck at it.)

Craven, the PLatinum World Champ comes down to ringside to talk about having brought some gold over from the US. He is interupted by the king of community television etc John E Radic. Radic makes his usual entrance, then gets on the microphone. He reminds the cheering adoring fans that this isn't Snakepit Wrestling, and that here he is the old John E, the bad dude as my half brother would say. He challenges Craven to match, and suddenly we have a war of words between the Australian and the Craz E Croatian.

Match 3
John E Radic v Craven

Bit of posturing from the wrestlers, and the crowd are now booing John E after just moments ago cheering him on.

Radic goes after Cravens leg and works it for a while, and locks on a figure four leg lock. Cravne manages to escape but is favouring the leg.

From out of nowhere though he lands a Clothesline from hell and gets the 1-2-3

Rating: 3.5/5 (Nice quick match, neither guy looking bad, both came out looking good. Isn't that the point of Wrestling)

Match 4
Rocky Monero v Iron Jay

Monero plays the heel in this one and we get some solid work between the two.

Monero is the plodding poser, Jay the quick moving flyer.

Some near falls from surfboards and finally Jay gets the win with a small package.

Rating: 3.5/5 (Good Match)

Match 5
20 Man over the top rope battle royal

I aint listing all the competitors, cos I don't know them all, sorry.

There where a few stories in here, and some nice exit spots, including Big Mike going splat which shows why he is one of Wrestlings great Bump Takers.

Blue Blood, Shark, and Seth Maxx managed to eliminate eachother following on from the earlier story line (a story arc, wow at least some of us where paying attention)

The last three where John E Radic, Miniac Mr Bigg, and... another guy (sorry)

Mt Bigg came out the winner after some bullying fro the two heels. After the match there was a beat down of some sorts before Blue Blood and Shark made the save.

Rating: 3/5 (Good Battle Royal)

Match 6
Krackerjak v Adam Gambino v Zak Zabbath
Hardcore Match for the Wrestlerock title

The owner of Wrestlerock came out first to say that Gambino was his insurance policy, and he was making sure the title was heading back to Victoria.

Krackerjak got on the mic, and using his perfect diction, his magnificant grasp of the English language, said what he thought of he insurance policy.

This was bloody. Gambino was the first to don the crimson mask, and he was soon followed by Krackers. Surprisingly Zak didn't seem to get it happening as much (bleeding I mean) as he ahs in the past.

Some great spots in this one, and the story was Zak and Krackers trying to avoid the monster Gambino while trying to win the title (gets out some paper and crayons for anyone that missed it)

Yes that was real vinegar that Gambino poured over a bleeding Krackers (ow f!@#)

The end came with a barb wire wrapped Krackers coming off the top rope onto a prone Gambino.

Rating: 4/5 (Hardcore wrestling done well, had all the elements and there was a logical sequence, and it had originality)

INTERMISSION (Clean up on aisle one)

Match 7
Ahmed Ibliss v TNT

These two could wrestle 60 minutes I wouldn't get bored. This was a great advertisement for what is out there in Australian Wrestling. Get out there and get some Australian Wrestling DVD's

For me it was match of the night, there where near falls, near finishers. It had peopel watching, it was great.

But... it was too short. It did feel like an entree, I so hope they get these two down here again in the future.

Rating: 4.5/5 (wanted more, please, someone book these guys and I will go)

Match 8
GD Grimm v Mimic

These two had a good match. And so they should, they have wrestled eachother a number of times, and see eachother wrestle regular.

To be honest, it was good, it wasn't mindblowing. Yeah the hits where solid, the moves clean, but until the end it lacked any real feeling.

I know Mimic has had better outings, I've seen a couple on Yout Tube, same with Grimm. This just felt flat. Maybe it was the time, but then the match previous was short to and achieved more.

Rating: 3/5 (I do want to see more, but this wasn't the best advertisement for them)

Match 9
Ryan Eagles v Roger Ventura

Similar to the previous match. I think these two struggled to come up with something compelling in the time they had. It was good, it was solid, but it didn't grab me.

The two can work, and I would love to see more. Again, You Tube shows what they can do when freed up a little.

But really, the time is not a 100% passable excuse. You can do good stuff in tight time, but you ahve to think more.

Rating: 3/5 (I would like to see more)

Match 10
Main Event
Steel Cage for the Southern Cross Title
Maniac v Koyote

The cage went up and we had the pleasure of Vulcans yelling into the microphone during this one. Great guy, but please, a decible or two lower.

This was a good big men in the cage match. I didn't expect Maniac to do a diving headbutt off the top of the cage, and god help us all had Koyote tried.

Maniac did bump a bit for koyote showing that he does give an awful lot to the sport in Australia.

The heels came in as Maniac was climbing for his escape, with Rocky blocking him. Maniac attacked rocky who fell from the cage and through the announce table (Luke out look, I mean look out Luke)

Eventually Maniac escaped the cage for the win.

Rating: 3/5 (Good big man match, maybe didn't need the cage)

Overall

I think in truth it was a long night for many people, with families leaving before the main event. Maybe it was two matches heavy and possibly could have lost the Battle Royal.

As a supershow I did leave wanting a little more, particularly from the second half of the show which had some great matches cut short.

I don't think the cage added to the main event, I would ahave loved to see just a standard one on one match between these two.

Maybe the promoter got a little carried away. Hopefully though Adelaide will get another supershow. Maybe drop it down to 7 matches, gve us a little longer in some, and only have one speciality match.

Overall though I stayed for the whole thing and enjoyed it. Australian Wrestling is alive and well.
