PREVIEWING THE UFC 109: RELENTLESS SPIKE TV CARD

By David Tees on 2/4/2010 11:15 AM
UFC Lightweight Division Fight

Melvin “The Young Assassin” Guillard (22-8-2) vs. Ronys “Jungle Boy” Torres (14-1-0)

Melvin Guillard has had a long run in the UFC, defeating the likes of Marcus Davis, Rick Davis, Gabe Ruediger, Denis Siver and Gleison Tibau, while suffering defeats to Josh Neer, Joe Stevenson, Rich Clementi and Nate Diaz. Melvin Guillard started off his MMA career in impressive fashion, with a ten fight undefeated streak that lasted nearly two years. In an interesting career note for Melvin Guillard, he fought nine times in 2003, winning eight of those fights. In the last four years, Melvin Guillard has only fought once outside of the UFC, defeating Eric Regan at a Rage In The Cage event in early 2008. Melvin Guillard will be looking to use his striking skills to win the fight, with thirteen victories coming by knockout. Ronys Torres will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he is a veteran of both the Jungle Fight and Shooto promotions. While in those promotions, Ronys Torres defeated Leonardo Carvalho, Rodrigo Freitas, Kim Wong Su, Marcos Maciel, Francieney Farianzo, Luiz Azeredo and Eliene Silva. This fight against Melvin Guillard will mark the first time in the three plus year career of Ronys Torres that he has competed in North America. It has been over a year since Ronys Torres last had an MMA fight, so cage rust can become a factor in the fight. Ronys Torres will be entering the fight riding an eight fight winning streak that has lasted well over two years. Ronys Torres will be looking to put the fight on the ground, with seven victories coming by way of submission.

My Prediction: Melvin Guillard

UFC Lightweight Division Fight

Mac Danzig (18-7-1) vs. Justin Buchholz (8-4-0)

Mac Danzig entered the UFC after winning the UFC Ultimate Fighter 6, by defeating Tommy Speer at the shows finale. Following that victory, Mac Danzig went onto defeat Mark Bocek before suffering three straight defeats to Clay Guida, Josh Neer and Jim Miller. Mac Danzig also made an apppearance in the PRIDE promotion, suffering a defeat to Hayato Sakurai at PRIDE 33. Mac Danzig is a longtime veteran of the King Of The Cage promotion, where he holds victories over Mike Valdez, Frank Kirmse, Takumi Nakayama, Jason Ireland, Orlando Ruiz, Buddy Clinton and John Mahlow, while suffering a lone defeat to Clay French. Mac Danzig will be entering the fight on a three fight losing streak and hasn’t achieved a victory in over a year. Mac Danzig will be looking to put the fight on the ground, with ten victories coming by way of submission. Justin Buchholz has had a poor run in the UFC, defeating Corey Hill, while suffering defeats to Matt Wiman, Terry Etim and Jeremy Stephens. Justin Buchholz is a veteran of the Alaska Fighting Championships, where he defeated Andy Garnand, Jimmy Gainey and Bo Underwood, while suffering a lone defeat to Rodney Rhoden. Justin Buchholz also spent some time in the Icon Sport promotion, defeating both Brandon Pieper and Marshall Harvest. Prior to coming to the UFC in 2008, Justin Buchholz competed in Elite XC, defeating Ikaika Choy-Fu. Justin Buchholz will be entering the fight on a two fight losing streak and hasn’t won a fight in over a year. Justin Buchholz will be looking to put the fight on the ground, with four victories coming by way of submission.

My Prediction: Mac Danzig
