THE EPSENHART SPECIAL: UFC VS. WWE WRESTLEMANIA 26 & TNA DESTINATION X

By David Tees on 3/17/2010 12:25 PM
Coming up on both March 21st and the weekend of March 27th, UFC fighters will not only be competing against each other, but the company itself may also be facing two different professional wrestling companies in the WWE and TNA. On those respective weekends, UFC On Versus 1 will go head to head with the TNA Destination X pay-per-view and UFC 111 pay-per-view will occur on the same weekend as the WWE Wrestlemania 26 pay-per-view.

Lets first discuss this coming weekends battle as the UFC On Versus 1 event headlined by Jon Jones taking on Brandon Vera goes up against the TNA Destination X pay-per-view headlined by TNA Champion AJ Styles taking on Abyss. Unlike the next weekends battle between the WWE’s flagship event and the multi-title fight UFC card, this TNA vs. UFC battle has two distinct differences between the UFC event and the TNA event.

The first difference in this battle between the UFC and TNA is that while TNA is airing live on pay-per-view, the UFC is airing on free TV. This could be huge in the battle between the two promotions because the UFC can potentially draw more viewers since it is a free program, while TNA will be charging approximately $29.95 for their pay-per-view offering.

The second difference is that while the WWE and UFC will be holding their pay-per-view a day apart from each other, the UFC and TNA will be going head to head. TNA may hold a small advantage in the meeting because their show starts one hour ahead of the UFC offering. However, with the UFC offering being free of charge, it may be easier to attract viewers to their event in the head to head clash.

So who walks away as the potential winner in this head to head meeting between UFC On Versus 1 and TNA Destination X? While I remain a fan of TNA, even after the Hulk Hogan regime took over, I feel with a free TV card that features Jon Jones, Brandon Vera, Junior Dos Santos and others, that the UFC will win the viewer ship battle over TNA.

Lets now take a look at arguably the biggest battle of the two weekends, as the UFC 111 pay-per-view (airing on Saturday March 27th) takes on the WWE Wrestlemania 26 pay-per-view (airing on Sunday March 28th). The UFC 111 pay-per-view is headlined by UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre taking on Dan Hardy and Frank Mir battles Shane Carwin to crown the UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion, while WWE Wrestlemania 26 is headlined by WWE Champion Batista faces John Cena and WWE World Champion Chris Jericho takes on Edge.

Now, unlike the UFC and TNA going head to head the weekend prior, the WWE and UFC pay-per-views will be airing a day apart. This could be both beneficial and disastrous for either company, depending on your point of view or if you’re a fan of one or both the companies. If you’re a fan of both the UFC and WWE, like myself, you could be split on which pay-per-view you want to spend your money on.

If you were to spend money and order both pay-per-views, you could possibly be spending upwards of a hundred dollars to see both events. Now, the UFC can potentially have the advantage of getting the fans money first, because they will be airing live a day before the WWE pay-per-view, so people who like both companies could make an impatient choice and order the UFC and skip the WWE.

However, while both companies run monthly pay-per-view events, this particular WWE event is the flagship pay-per-view event for the company and it has been one of the biggest pay-per-view events in the entire pay-per-view market as a whole. In the long run, it could be the tradition and glamour of WWE Wrestlemania that keeps the fans holding their money until the Sunday night event.

So who walks away as the potential winner in this head to head meeting between UFC 111 and WWE Wrestlemania 26? While the UFC is doing a rare two title fight show the night before the WWE event, it will be the WWE who gets the win in this duel, because while the UFC will put on good cards throughout the year, WWE Wrestlemania comes once a year and this year, as a WWE fan, could rank as one of the greatest cards in Wrestlemania history.
