By David Tees on 3/19/2010 8:35 PM
UFC Light Heavyweight Division Fight

Eric “Red” Schafer (11-4-2) vs. Jason Brilz (17-2-1)

Eric Schafer has had an interesting run in the UFC, defeating Rob MacDonald, Houston Alexander and Antonio Mendes, while suffering defeats to Michael Bisping, Stephan Bonnar and Ryan Bader. Eric Schafer also holds a victory over Jason Guida, who is the brother of UFC veteran Clay Guida, at a Xtreme Fighting Organization event. In the first four years of his professional MMA career, Eric Schafer did not suffer an MMA loss, but had two draws. Eric Schafer will be looking to put the fight on the ground, with seven victories coming by way of submission. Jason Brilz has had a successful run in the UFC, defeating Brad Morris and Tim Boetsch, while suffering a defeat to Eliot Marshall. Prior to suffering the loss to Eliot Marshall at UFC 103, Jason Brilz was on a twelve fight winning streak that has lasted nearly seven years. Prior to entering the UFC in late 2008, Jason Brilz had already defeated UFC veterans Michael Patt, Jason MacDonald and Alex Schoenauer. Jason Brilz will be looking to put the fight on the ground, with nine victories coming by way of submission.

My Prediction: Eric Schafer

UFC Welterweight Division Fight

Mike Pierce (10-3-0) vs. Julio Paulino (17-2-0)

Mike Pierce has had an interesting run in the UFC, defeating Brock Larson and suffering a lone defeat to Jon Fitch. Mike Pierce came to the UFC after the WEC eliminated the WEC Welterweight Division, as Mike Pierce defeated Justin Haskins in his lone WEC appearance. Prior to entering the UFC in late 2009, Mike Pierce had fought UFC and WEC veteran Mark Munoz at a Gladiator Challenge event. Mike Pierce will be looking to use his striking skills to win the fight, with six victories coming by knockout. Julio Paulino will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he is a longtime veteran of the Alaska Fighting Championship promotion. While in the Alaska Fighting Championship, Julio Paulino defeated fourteen of his sixteen opponents he has fought in the promotion. In an interesting career note, this fight on UFC On Versus 1 will mark only the fourth time Julio Paulino has fought outside of the Alaska Fighting Championship promotion. Julio Paulino will be looking to use his striking skills to win the fight, with ten victories coming by knockout.

My Prediction: Mike Pierce

UFC Heavyweight Division Fight

Brendan “The Hybrid” Schaub (4-1-0) vs. Chase Gormley (6-1-0)

Brendan Schaub made his UFC debut at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale, losing to Roy Nelson in the evenings main event. Prior to entering the UFC in late 2009, Brendan Schaub was a veteran of the Ring Of Fire promotion, where he defeated Jay Lester, Alex Rozman and Bojan Spalevic. Until suffering the loss to Roy Nelson in his UFC debut, Brendan Schaub was on a four fight undefeated streak that had lasted over a year. Brendan Schaub will be looking to use his striking skills to win the fight, with all of his victories coming by knockout. Chase Gormley made his UFC debut at UFC 104 in late 2009, losing to Stefan Struve by way of submission. Chase Gormley was a veteran of the Gladiator Challenge promotion, where he defeated John Devine, Brandon Tarns and Rick Cheek. In his last fight before entering the UFC, Chase Gormley defeated A&E reality TV star of the program “Inked” Eric Pele. Chase Hormley is a fighter who is comfortable wherever the fight ends up, with four victories coming by knockout and submission.

My Prediction: Chase Gormley

UFC Welterweight Division Fight

John “Doomsday” Howard (13-4-0) vs. Daniel “Ninja” Roberts (9-0-0)

John Howard is currently undefeated in UFC competition, having defeated Chris Wilson, Tamdan McCrory and Dennis Hallman. John Howard also spent a short time in the International Fight League, having defeated Nick Calandrino. John Howard will be entering his fourth UFC fight riding a six fight winning streak that has lasted over two years. John Howard will be looking to put the fight on the ground, with six victories coming by way of submission. Daniel Roberts will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but does so riding a nine fight undefeated streak. Daniel Roberts has fought many times in the Extreme Fight League, Extreme Fight Night and Bricktown Brawl promotions, defeating Brandon Gaines, Jeremy Michael, Danny Grass, Akira Ninjo, Jeff Lindsay and Mike Jackson. Of his nine professional MMA fights, only two have gone to a decision for Daniel Roberts, which speaks to the fighters finishing abilities. Daniel Roberts will be looking to put the fight on the ground, with seven victories coming by way of submission.

My Prediction: John Howard

UFC Lightweight Division Fight

Duane “Bang” Ludwig (19-10-0) vs. Darren “The Damage” Elkins (11-1-0)

Duane Ludwig has had a successful run in the UFC, with victories over Genki Sudo and Jonathan Goulet, while suffering a lone defeat to Jim Miller. Duane Ludwig is also a veteran of the Strikeforce promotion, where he defeated Tony Fryklund and Yves Edwards, while suffering defeats to Tyson Griffin, Josh Thomson and Lyle Beerbohm. In an interesting career note for Duane Ludwig, the gap between his most recent UFC run and his last UFC run was almost four years. Duane Ludwig will be looking to use his striking skills to win the fight, with ten victories coming by knockout. Darren Elkins will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but has already defeated top MMA fighters Pat Curran and UFC veteran Gideon Ray. Darren Elkins is a veteran of the C3 MMA promotion, where he defeated Decarlo Johnson, Kenny Klein and Pat Curran. Darren Elkins started off his MMA career in impressive fashion, with a nine fight undefeated streak that had lasted over two years. Darren Elkins will be looking to put the fight on the ground, with five victories coming by way of submission.

My Prediction: Darren Elkins

UFC Light Heavyweight Division Fight

Eliot “The Fire” Marshall (8-1-0) vs. Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko (23-4-0)

Eliot Marshall is currently undefeated in UFC competition, with victories coming over Jules Bruchez, Vinny Magalhaes and Jason Brilz. Eliot Marshall is also a veteran of the Ring Of Fire promotion, where he defeated Jarrett Kelton, Mike Altman, Dan Green, Damir Mihajlovic and Marcos Sursa, while suffering a lone defeat to Rob MacDonald. Despite competing in professional MMA for over four years, Eliot Marshall has only competed in two promotions, the UFC and Ring Of Fire. Eliot Marshall will be looking to put the fight on the ground, with five victories coming by way of submission. Vladimir Matyushenko has had a successful run in the UFC, defeating Yuki Kondo, Travis Wiuff, Pedro Rizzo and Igor Pokrajac, while suffering defeats to Tito Ortiz and Andrei Arlovski. Vladimir Matyushenko also competed in the International Fight League and was the lone International Fight League Light Heavyweight Champion. Vladimir Matyushenko also competed in the final Affliction MMA event, suffering a defeat to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. My Prediction: Vladimir Matyushenko

Clay Guida has had an interesting run in the UFC, defeating Justin James, Marcus Aurelio, Samy Schiavo, Mac Danzig and Nate Diaz, while suffering defeats to Din Thomas, Tyson Griffin, Roger Huerta, Diego Sanchez and Kenny Florian. Clay Guida also had a short run in Strikeforce, defeating Josh Thomson and suffering a defeat to Gilbert Melendez. At one point in his MMA career, Clay Guida went on a fifteen fight winning streak that lasted over a year. Clay Guida will be looking to put the fight on the ground, with twelve victories coming by way of submission. Shannon Gugerty has had an interesting run in the UFC, defeating Dale Hartt and Matt Grice, while suffering defeats to Spencer Fisher and Terry Etim.
