NWA Mid-America Television Champion Matt Boyce reminded fans not to the touch that mouse…cute.
Stand up opening by Aaron Camaro and a sinister looking Jeremy Arnold, where they talked about Chad Hyatt becoming the new NWA Mid-America Champion via a fluke win over Will Owens.
(1) Corey Hollis & White Tiger & Shane Smalls beat The Jeremiahs (Plunkett & Flynt) & Xavier in 13:20. Crowd was amped beyond belief. The speed and technical expertise of Tiger trumped the massive blackness of Xavier. Babyface domination ensued until Hollis got hung out to dry by Flynt. The heat was a showcase for Xavier. Arnold pointed it out when Hollis could have (should have) made the tag and didn’t. Smalls also took major abuse, as the rudos worked over his taped up midsection. We returned from a commercial break to find 6-way action in progress. Flynt hit a double underhook front suplex where Hollis did a 450 spin in midair. An amazing move that was well worth the replay. Smalls hit the Last Rites on Flynt. Plunkett spinebustered Smalls. Hollis hit Soundless Dawn on Plunkett (camera missed it). Tiger followed with the Tiger Splash and Hollis pinned Plunkett. Crowd went apeshit for the finish.
“No Mercy†Tommy Mercer said he was done trying to be somebody he was not, pretending to be hero, “like I cared about you people, like I cared about Steve-O, like I cared about Matt Boyce. I’ve had enough. I can’t take it. I’m going to be exactly who I am.†Mercer said he was coming for Boyce’s title and he could expect no mercy. Good promo.
Cut to Senior Official Rudy Charles in the dressing room. He was rolling those little green rocks around in his hand and talking to his gear bag, in a vain attempt to come to grips with his conflicted feelings about Mike Posey. This man needs therapy. NOW. The camera zoomed in for a close up of a black wig in the bag.
(2) Orion Bishop defeated Chad Hyatt to become the new Mid-America Heavyweight Champion in 5:39. Charles looked quite disturbed. ‘Scuffled†Arnold said, noting the spiritual rocks in his hand. Fans affectionately chanted “Barney†at Hyatt. Bishop was eating him alive. Chrisjen Hayme and Mercer came to ringside. They double teamed Hyatt and rolled him back inside, where Bishop pulled him up to prevent a three count. Hyatt rolled out from under Collateral Damage (Vader style reverse splash). His comeback was barely making a dent, when Hayme interfered and Bishop hit the Long Count (spear) for the pin. The camera missed the finish.
Backstage, Mercer told Bishop and Hayme it wasn’t his thing to hang out in groups, but he did enjoy beating up that big goof Hyatt. Mercer told Bishop not to worry, because the Mid-America Heavyweight Championship wasn’t the title he was interested in. Hayme said it was great to see the title on somebody deserving. He said his issues with Ace Rockwell had just begun. “Greetings, gentlemanâ€. A masked troll introduced himself as The Reverend (Dan Wilson from NWA Anarchy). The Rev had a bug eyed Se7en with him. He said they would partake in their own feast of violence later in the night. The Rev has a great cackle. Enter the altered state Rudy Charles fast talking and glad handing everyone in the room. He was quite a sight with the wig, the tropical shirt, the cane and the cigar. The camera panned across for reactions ending with an extreme close up of Se7en.
(3) Joined in progress…Reymer Twins (Evan & Kevan) beat Bad Boy Dixon & Phil Wilson. Reymers are Young Bucks clones. A weak running knee by Dixon prompted Camaro to bring up Great Muta. Sheer sacrilege. Reymers won it with simultaneous pins.
The Reverend led Se7en to the ring. He powerbombed one of the twins. Terry Teague hit the ring. Camaro said he had the heart of a lion. Se7en powerbomed the bejeezus out of him. “And the backbone of a chicken,†said Arnold. Se7en gave Reymers a double chokeslam. Some guy named Mickey Gotti hit the ring and took a grillbuster. White Tiger and Shane Smalls ran in. Se7en wasted them as well.
The Reverend introduced himself and his monster to the NWA ME fans. The audio was way low, rendering his great mic skills relatively useless. Nice mask though.
(4) Tommy Mercer & Orion Bishop & Chrisjen Hayme beat Matt Boyce & Ace Rockwell & Steve-O when Mercer pinned Boyce (14:40). Mercer immediately tagged out to avoid contact with Boyce. Boyce and Rockwell tried to work on Bishops’ arm, but he mowed Rockwell down and tagged out. The babyface side was having a field day against Hayme. (commercial break) Rockwell was taking heat. They cut to a replay of what took place during the break – With Rockwell perched on the top turnbuckle, Mercer interfered and Hayme brought him back to earth with an arm drag. Basically, this segment was Bishop and Mercer softening up Rockwell for Hayme. Amazingly vocal crowd that was bringing the Rockwell love and hating on Mercer. Arnold was running wild on commentary, quoting lyrics from Dr. Dre, The O’Jays and Rod Stewart. A stalling front suplex by Mercer left Rockwell in a pitiful state. “When you’re getting killed out there in a match like Ace Rockwell, look at the guy, he can’t even stand up. Steve-O makes the save for his team. Ace Rockwell says, ‘why did you do that, man? Just let me lose. I’m hurt out here,†said Camaro. Geez, Aaron, what babyface in his right mind would do that? Rockwell made a miraculous recovery for a diving tag to Boyce, who cleaned up on Mercer with a spinkick and a swinging neckbreaker. Hayme clubbed Boyce from behind. Bishop leveled Boyce with a lariat. With the other four guys battling on the floor, Mercer countered Boyce’s high crossbody with the Mercy Kill for a clean 1-2-3.
THOUGHTS: If NWA Main Event ever gets their production problems squared away, Nashville is going to have one fine independent wrestling show on their hands. One area they’re not have issues with is capturing the vibe of a packed house at 413 Veritas Street. It’s the stuff of classic TV studio wrestling. I would have enjoyed this episode even if the wrestling sucked (it didn’t), the crowd was that hot. I thought this was Arnold’s best work on color to date. He was over the top a at times and the uneven mic levels were annoying, but not as maddening as the crappy audio on Reverend’s promo and failing to capture the finishes of the first two matches. Back to the positives, as they definitely outweighed the negatives on this episode --- Mercer is showing great instincts as a heel. I wonder how many takes they did on that promo, because it was impressive. Rockwell was awesome as the babyface-in-peril in the main event. As an all-around performer, he’s at the top of his game right now. Giving Se7en to the Reverend was a stellar idea. The impromptu destruction of random jobbers was textbook. Now that’s the way to book a monster.
They needed the get the belt off of Hyatt
ASAP, and Bishop was the right choice for new champion. I could the reason
for Mercer and Hayme to be at ringside, although saw no need for the
interference. This episode struck a nice balance between keeping the big
heels (Xavier, Se7en, Bishop) looking strong, without making the key
babyfaces into cannon fodder. Hayme is slime, so fine for him to take the
punishment. The six mans were both quite good. Two in one hour seems like
overload, but Bill Behrens has a knack for using them to advance multiple
storylines and get a lot of guys in the mix. The backstage segment with
Rudy’s alter ego disrupting the heel convo was comical in a surreal kind of
way. Some good camera work here (by Behrens). The first seed was planted for
problems among the top heels. Good stuff. Thumbs up for the wrestling and
the stories. Thumbs way down for the production.
