However, while the game is much improved from last years version, there is still some old problems from last years game that hamper the experience of the game again this year.
Lets get started with the overall game play, which has changed significantly from last years game, in two different fields in particular. The first change I’ll discuss has to do with the actual game play itself, which has changed to a much quicker, more fluid motion. If you have played EA Sports Fight Night Round 4, the fluid striking mode you see in that game is seamlessly transferred to this game.
What that means for games is the fighting feels more realistic, with it being more challenging to avoid getting knocked out or tapped out, while at the same time, attempting to knockout or tap out the opposition. While this new style may frustrate some gamers, it is something that adds a new level of enjoyment to the game after you master the controls.
The other slight change in this years game comes from the submission system, which has gone from two ways to force the tap out to a single method. In last years game, you can either spin the joystick counter clockwise or by simply using the button mashing technique. Now, the button mashing technique has been eliminated, while the joystick spinning is the sole way to force a tap out.
Certain game modes from the last game return this year as well, like exhibition mode, ultimate fights mode and career mode. There are several new game modes as well in this years game, which include title mode, title defense mode, tournament mode and event mode.
Title mode and title defense mode are essentially the same game mode, with one slight alteration from one to the other. Each mode pit’s a fighter of your choosing against twelve UFC fighters in a gauntlet style challenge, where title mode gives your fighter an opportunity to win a title and title defense mode has you defend the championship.
If you are a fan of the old school UFC events, then the next game mode, tournament mode, should definitely appeal to you. In this mode, you select a fighter from one of the five UFC weight classes and pit them in a tournament that features four to sixteen fighters. Like the title mode and title defense mode, as your fighter progresses in the battles, he starts to deteriorate in his health.
The last new mode in this years game is called event mode, in which you can download the fight cards from upcoming UFC events and play through all of the fights. For example, I downloaded the UFC 114: Rampage vs. Evans card and played through all of the fights that featured fighters that were on the roster of the video game.
There is a few additions to the online mode this year as well, mainly in the new addition of the online fight camps. For the online fight camps, you can start your own fight camp and recruit other players to join and train at your camp. You can name your camp whatever you want to name it and even take on other players in camp vs. camp competitions.
Now, the biggest threat to the online play of UFC Undisputed 2009 returns this year to UFC Undisputed 2010, which is the online lag. It seems to be worse this year, because while there has been times I’ve been able to jump into game play pretty quickly, there has also been a few occasions where I’ve had to wait extended periods of time to just get to the online play menu.
Also making its return this year is career mode, which see’s very little in the way of change from last years game to this years game. The only major addition is that your created fighter doesn’t instantly come into the UFC, he actually competed in the UFC owned World Fighting Alliance first. The World Fighting Alliance is the promotion that the UFC bought years ago, which gave them the contract of Quinton Jackson.
The other feature that returns this year is the create a fighter mode, which does an even better job of letting players create fighters for competition in the UFC. Besides putting your created fighter in the career mode, the created fighter can also compete in the online modes, exhibition modes, tournament modes, title mode and title defense mode.
Overall, UFC Undisputed 2010 is a marked improvement over UFC Undisputed 2009, but I could see the problems with the online mode hampering the game for players everywhere.
