PREVIEWING THE STRIKEFORCE: LOS ANGELES PRELIMINARY CARD

By David Tees on 6/14/2010 10:23 AM
Strikeforce Bantamweight Division Fight

Marcus Kowal (2-0-0) vs. Hugo Sandoval (1-2-0)

Marcus Kowal will be making his Strikeforce debut in this fight, but he is a veteran of the Total Fighting Alliance promotion. While in the Total Fighting Alliance promotion, Marcus Kowal defeated David Ghobrial by knockout. Marcus Kowal also competed in the Battle In The Ballroom promotion, defeating Vincent Martinez by submission. Marcus Kowal will be riding a two fight undefeated streak into the fight, which has lasted just over a full year. Marcus Kowal is a fighter who is comfortable wherever the fight ends up, with all of his victories coming by knockout and submission. Hugo Sandoval will also be making his Strikeforce debut in this fight, but he is a veteran of the King Of The Cage promotion. While in King Of The Cage, Hugo Sandoval suffered a defeat to Brandon Bender by way of submission in the opening round. Hugo Sandoval also competed in the Gladiator Challenge promotion, defeating Joe Acuna via split decision. It has been nearly a year since Hugo Sandoval last had an MMA fight, so cage rust could be a factor in the fight. Hugo Sandoval is a fighter known for taking fights the distance, with two of his fights going to a decision.

My Prediction: Marcus Kowal

Strikeforce Welterweight Division Fight

RJ Clifford (3-1-0) vs. Jeremy Umphries (4-1-0)

RJ Clifford will be making his Strikeforce debut in this fight, but he is a veteran of the King Of The Cage promotion. While in the King Of The Cage promotion, RJ Clifford suffered a defeat to Mike Robles by majority decision. RJ Clifford has also competed in the Valor Fighting Championships, defeating Jeff Harwell by knockout. It has been well over a year since RJ Clifford last competed in an MMA fight, so cage rust can become a factor in the fight. RJ Clifford will be looking to use his striking skills to win the fight, with two victories coming by knockout. Jeremy Umphries will also be making his Strikeforce debut in this fight, but he has previously competed in the Shooto promotion. While in Shooto, Jeremy Umphries defeated Harris Norwood by way of submission in the second round of the fight. Jeremy Umphries also fought in the Total Fighting Alliance promotion, defeating John Lopez by submission. Jeremy Umphries started off his MMA career in impressive fashion, with a four fight undefeated streak that had lasted over two years. Jeremy Umphries will be looking to put the fight on the ground, with three victories coming by way of submission.

My Prediction: Jeremy Umphries
