FIVE ROUNDS WITH WEC 49: VARNER VS. SHALORUS

By David Tees on 6/24/2010 9:14 PM
Following a very successful debut on pay-per-view, WEC returned to the Versus Network with WEC 49: Varner vs. Shalorus. The first WEC card in Canada saw a main event end in a draw, plus fellow countrymen Chris Horodecki and Mark Hominick both notched victories.

Round One: A Broken Foot, A Broken Hand, Three Kicks To The Testicles …And A Draw!!!

When a fight is set up to determine the top contender to the WEC Lightweight Title ends in a draw, what do you do? Even after getting a point deduction following his second illegal low blow of the fight, Kamal Shalorus still got a draw with Jamie Varner. Jamie Varner, who not only sacrificed his testicles during the fight, but a hand and foot as well, only got a draw when many MMA insiders thought he had achieved a unanimous decision win. In the post fight press conference, Jamie Varner even stated that “I should’ve won that fight” definitely has a lot of supporters in his camp right now. The real benefactor of all this could be current WEC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson, who can rest up for many months until a rematch between Jamie Varner and Kamal Shalorus can be completed.

Next Round For Jamie Varner: Recovery and one more battle with Kamal Shalorus.

Next Round For Kamal Shalorus: Jamie Varner

Round Two: We Have A Fight Of The Year Candidate

While the main event ended in controversy, the WEC Featherweight Division battle between Mark Hominick and Yves Jabouin ended without controversy. These two Canadian warriors slugged it out in two rounds on non-stop action and non-stop entertainment. After being dropped only moments earlier, Mark Hominick dropped Yves Jabouin with several punches and finished it up with ground and pound until a TKO was declared. Leading up to the fight, both men declared that there was no hatred between the two, but you could’ve thought different when the bell rang. Mark Hominick is now one step closer to a title opportunity, while Yves Jabouin will return to the chalk board.

Next Round For Mark Hominick: Mike Brown, Josh Grispi and Leonard Garcia would be fun.

Next Round For Yves Jabouin: Diego Nunes, Javier Vazquez and LC Davis would be interesting.

Round Three: That Was A Scary Sight

In you had read my column previewing the WEC 49 fight card, you would have read that I chose LC Davis to defeat Josh Grispi in their duel. However, I was proven wrong when Josh Grispi choked out LC Davis into unconsciousness with a guillotine choke in the opening round. To me, the scary thing wasn’t how fast Josh Grispi achieved victory, but the horrifying image of a knocked out LC Davis on the ground after the referee separated the fighters. I must not be the only one using this train of thought, as the image of LC Davis has popped up all over the internet recently. Scary sight or not, nothing can be taken away from the excellent victory attained by the veteran Josh Grispi.

Next Round For Josh Grispi: Mark Hominick, Mike Brown or Leonard Garcia.

Next Round For LC Davis: Diego Nunes or Yves Jabouin

Round Four: Even With A New Opponent, Chris Horodecki Will Still Get A Tap Out

Chris Horodecki was scheduled to face Ed Ratcliff at WEC 49, but several days before the event, Danny Downes came in as a replacement for the injured Ed Ratcliff. Even on short notice, Danny Downes stepped up his game and took Chris Horodecki into the third round. Chris Horodecki, fighting in his home country, eventually forced Danny Downes to tap out to a rear naked choke. With the way that the main event concluded, Chris Horodecki could have easily put himself into title contention with just a single victory in the WEC. Danny Downes, given the fact he took the fight on short notice, should be given another opportunity in the WEC.

Next Round For Chris Horodecki: Bart Palaszewski, Ed Ratcliff or Rob McCullough

Next Round For Danny Downes: Marcus Hicks or Karen Darabedyan

Round Five: Karen Darabedyan, We Located Your Arm

It is truly an odd site in professional MMA to see a fighter lose two fights in a row by the same finish in exactly the same way. That is exactly what happened to Karen Darabedyan, who suffered an arm bar loss to Bart Palaszewski at WEC 47 and now to Will Kerr at WEC 49. Now, I’m not talking about the arm bar finish itself, but the fact that Karen Darabedyan was arm barred with his opponents using the cage in the exact same way as the other was a truly interesting moment. Karen Darabedyan, who debuted in the WEC with a victory over Rob McCullough, now has suffered two straight losses in the WEC. Like Bart Palaszewski, Will Kerr can hopefully transition this WEC victory to a good run in the WEC Lightweight Division.

Next Round For Will Kerr: Chris Horodecki or Bart Palaszewski

Next Round For Karen Darabedyan: Fighting outside of the WEC.
