FIVE ROUNDS WITH PWP: WAR ON THE MAINLAND

By David Tees on 8/15/2010 4:45 PM
The Powerhouse World Promotions made its pay-per-view debut on Saturday Night featuring a lineup of former UFC veterans. Three champions were crowned on Saturday Night as Tim Sylvia, Matt Horwich and Tony Lopez all walked away with PWP gold.

Round One: The “Maine-iac” Destroys A Headhunter

The headlining fight of the night featured former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia become the first ever PWP Heavyweight Champion by defeating Paul Buentello. Tim Sylvia used him size and hefty weight advantage to bully Paul Buentello around the ring before knocking him out with a violent uppercut. Tim Sylvia, according to color commentator Bas Rutten, will next defend his title against UFC veteran Pedro Rizzo. According to Paul Buentello, the loss cost him an opportunity to compete at the upcoming UFC Ultimate Fight Night 22 event.

Next Round For Tim Sylvia: A PWP Heavyweight Title defense against Pedro Rizzo.

Next Round For Paul Buentello: Jeff Monson, Josh Barnett and Ken Shamrock are a few free agents that PWP can bring into fight “The Headhunter.”

Round Two: A Quantum Physics PWP Middleweight Champion

Former IFL Middleweight Champion Matt Horwich added more gold to his collection as he defeated UFC veteran Thales Leites to become the first PWP Middleweight Champion. This fight between Matt Horwich and Thales Leites was easily the fight of the night and in my opinion, could be considered a “how to guide” in how to fight on the ground. In the third round, it looked like Thales Leites was going to tap out Matt Horwich with an arm triangle, but it seemed that Thales Leites was making mental errors as he kept changing positions while applying the hold. In the past year or so, Thales Leites has come up short in two title opportunities, falling short in both his UFC Middleweight Title and PWP Middleweight Title bids.

Next Round For Matt Horwich: A fight with Gustavo Machado could be interesting.

Next Round For Thales Leites: Free agent fighters like Brad Blackburn or Jay Silva could be in his future.

Round Three: The Punisher Gets Punished

When the word spread that Jason Lambert was set to face Tony Lopez instead of Allan Goes, must people probably thought that Jason Lambert had an easy road to becoming champion. However, it took a violent knee strike and several unanswered punches to the cranium to put Jason Lambert on the ground and out cold. Tony Lopez would be walking away the first ever PWP Light Heavyweight Champion while Jason Lambert was left to evaluate a cloudy future. To make things even more interesting is that Tony Lopez had to drop twenty six pounds in a single week to make weight for the fight.

Next Round For Tony Lopez: Free agent fighters like David Heath, Jay Silva and Razak Al-Hassan would make good fights.

Next Round For Jason Lambert: Career re-evaluation time.

Round Four: “Lil’ Evil” Isn’t So Evil Anymore

Jens Pulver was cut from both the WEC after suffering five straight losses and most thought he would remain out of MMA following his loss to Javier Vasquez. Jens Pulver then resurfaced in PWP and was set to face a rather untested MMA fighter in Diego Garijo on Saturday Night. Instead of ending his losing streak, Jens Pulver added another loss to it after being choked out rather quickly by Diego Garijo. While Diego Garijo’s career is now on the rise, it seems time for the fight known as “Lil’ Evil” to put his career to rest.

Next Round For Diego Garijo: Erin Beach or Cleber Luciano would be interesting.

Next Round For Jens Pulver: Retirement

Round Five: What the heck was I watching?

I have seen plenty of MMA companies on be free TV and pay-per-view like the UFC, WEC, Strikeforce, Bellator Fighting Championships, Elite XC, International Fight League and others, but few of them (if any) had the absolutely terrible production values of PWP. There was so many camera screw ups to list that I would have to do a entirely different column just to name them. Also, for the majority of the event, the color commentary team, which included MMA veteran Bas Rutten, was atrocious. Hopefully in future PWP pay-per-view broadcasts, the company can fix and overcome these terrible production issues.

Next Round For PWP: Learning how to produce a better pay-per-view.
