PREVIEWING THE UFC 118: EDGAR VS. PENN II PRELIMINARY CARD

By David Tees on 8/25/2010 5:37 PM
UFC Welterweight Division Fight

Amilcar Alves (11-1-0) vs. Mike Pierce (12-3-0)

Amilcar Alves will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he is a veteran of The Glory promotion out of Brazil. While in The Glory, Amilcar Alves defeated the duo of Diego Braga and Andre Tadeu, both fights occurred within two months of each other. It has been over eight months since Amilcar Alves last competed in an MMA fight, so cage rust can become a factor in the fight. Amilcar Alves will be entering the fight riding an eight fight winning streak, which has lasted over three years. Amilcar Alves will be looking to put the fight on the ground, with four victories coming by way of submission. Mike Pierce has had a successful run in the UFC, defeating both Brock Larson and Julio Paulino, while suffering a lone defeat to Jon Fitch. Mike Pierce also fought in the World Extreme Cagefighting promotion, defeating Justin Haskins by TKO. Mike Pierce started off his MMA career in impressive fashion, with a three fight undefeated streak that had lasted nearly a year. Prior to entering the UFC in late 2009, Mike Pierce had fought UFC veteran Mark Munoz at a Gladiator Challenge event. Mike Pierce will be looking to use his striking skills to win the fight, with seven victories coming by knockout.

My Prediction: Mike Pierce

UFC Welterweight Division Fight

Nick “Slick” Osipczak (5-1-0) vs. Greg Soto (7-1-0)

Nick Osipczak has had a successful run in the UFC, defeating Frank Riddle and Matthew Riddle, while suffering a defeat to Rick Story. Nick Osipczak is also a veteran of the FX3 MMA promotion, defeating the duo of Brendan Flanagan and Nigel Whitear. Of his six professional MMA fights, only one fight has gone to a decision for Nick Osipczak, which speaks to the fighters finishing abilities. Nick Osipczak started off his MMA career in impressive fashion, with a five fight undefeated streak that had lasted well over a year. Nick Osipczak will be looking to put the fight on the ground, with three victories coming by way of submission. Greg Soto is currently winless in UFC competition, suffering a defeat to Matthew Riddle at UFC 111. Greg Soto also competed in the Ring Of Combat promotion, defeating the duo of Doug Gordon and Shawn Formann. In an interesting career note for Greg Soto, the lone loss of his MMA career came by disqualification after he used an illegal strike against Matthew Riddle at UFC 111. Greg Soto started off his MMA career in impressive fashion, with a seven fight undefeated streak that had lasted over three years. Greg Soto will be looking to put the fight on the ground, with three victories coming by way of submission.

My Prediction: Nick Osipczak

UFC Middleweight Division Fight

Dan Miller (11-4-0) vs. John Salter (5-1-0)

Dan Miller has had an interesting run in the UFC, defeating Rob Kimmons, Matt Horwich and Jake Rosholt, while suffering defeats to Chael Sonnen, Damien Maia and Michael Bisping. Dan Miller also competed in the International Fight League, defeating Dave Phillips and Ryan McGivern. Prior to entering the UFC in late 2008, Dan Miller had fought top MMA fighters like Mike Massenzio and John Howard. Dan Miller will be entering the fight trying to end a three fight losing streak, which has lasted over a year. Dan Miller will be looking to put the fight on the ground, with seven victories coming by way of submission. John Salter has had an interesting run in the UFC, defeating Jason MacDonald and suffering a defeat to Gerald Harris. John Salter also competed in the Adrenaline MMA promotion, defeating Roberto Traven by knockout. Of his six professional MMA fights, none of John Salters fights ended via decision, which speaks to the fighters finishing abilities. John Salter started off his MMA career in impressive fashion, with a four fight undefeated streak that had lasted nearly a year. John Salter will be looking to use his striking skills to win the fight, with three victories coming by knockout.

My Prediction: Dan Miller
