FIVE ROUNDS WITH SHARK FIGHTS 13

By David Tees on 9/12/2010 8:45 PM
Shark Fights made its debut on pay-per-view this past Saturday Night with an event filled with solid MMA action and laugh out loud commentary by Don Frye. Top MMA fighters like Trevor Prangley, Keith Jardine, Houston Alexander, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, Brock Larson and other entered the cage on Saturday Night.

Round One: The Dean Gets Schooled

When the officials at Shark Fights announced that the Trevor Prangley (Shark Fights Light Heavyweight Champion)/Keith Jardine fight would be non-title, I was shocked. I figured a battle between the grizzled champion and a former UFC contender would be title worthy, but I was proven wrong. When it was all said and done, Trevor Prangley would handily defeat Keith Jardine, using a combination of patience and counter striking. As for Keith Jardine, it will be a long trip back to the drawing board, as he has now suffered his fifth straight MMA defeat.

Next Round For Trevor Prangley: Houston Alexander

Next For Keith Jardine: Reworking a fight model that no longer functions.

Round Two: The African Assassin Was Assassinated

Most people knew that a battle between Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and Houston Alexander would be a slugfest, but most people probably couldn’t believe who was victorious. After surviving a first round assault that nearly saw Houston Alexander go down for the count, “The Assassin” would not be down for good though. Early in the fights second round, Houston Alexander would catch Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou with a flying knee and possibly thirty or more straight punches until the referee stepped in to end the fight. What may have even been more shocking is that it took referee Steve Armstrong more than twenty seconds of Houston Alexander assaulting Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou with punches to stop the fight.

Next Round For Houston Alexander: A Shark Fights Light Heavyweight Title Fight against Trevor Prangley.

Next Round For Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: A battle with Keith Jardine or a move to heavyweight against Aaron Rosa.

Round Three: Call 911, There Was A Robbery In Texas

If you read my preview of the Shark Fights 13 card I wrote up earlier this week, you would have noticed that I picked Paul Daley to defeat Jorge Masvidal. If you either watched the pay-per-view last night or checked out my live coverage of the event, I would have been proven correct as Paul Daley defeated Jorge Masvidal by unanimous decision. However, in my own personal opinion, I believe Jorge Masvidal should’ve defeated Paul Daley by decision last night. When you control twelve of the fights fifteen minutes with takedowns and ground control, you should be awarded the fight.

Next Round For Paul Daley: Eric Davila, Paul Bradley or Tarec Saffiedine

Next Round For Jorge Masvidal: Pete Spratt or Brock Larson

Round Four: Shark Fights Got The Wrong Brock

When the WEC first debuted on Versus a few years back, one of the fighters I was excited to watch was welterweight Brock Larson, same when he entered the UFC. However, after his performance on Saturday Night, it truly looked like Brock Larson was a shell of his former self. Brock Larson striking looked out of place and his takedown attempts were, at best, considered to be very weak. Even color commentator Don Frye noted after the fight ended that Brock Larson didn’t look like the fighter he once was.

Next Round For Tarec Saffiedine: Paul Bradley or Paul Daley

Next Round For Brock Larson: Time spent retooling his quality MMA skills.

Round Five: Don Frye, The Man…The Myth…The Legend!

At Shark Fights 13, color commentator Don Frye made statements that have become the stuff of legend, here is my personal top ten (courtesy of MMAfighting.com)…

1. On Johnny Rees and Paul Bradley both wearing red trunks: “I’ll take the white guy in red shorts.”

2. On the difficulty of finding an MMA fight in France: “I didn’t know France was ever in a fight…I heard Italy just declared war on Spain, and France surrendered.”

3. On cauliflower ear: "This guy's tough. His ears are like potatoes. Looks like he got stuck in the birth canal, had to beat him out with a stick."

4. After the fights, while straight man/babysitter Kruck was still on his way back to the broadcast table from a post-fight interview with Trevor Prangley: "That was like two hours of rough, hard sex. I need a cigarette and a tequila now."

5. On his background as a wrestler: "Look at me: I'm a wrestler. My balls are so big, I wear the excess on my hat."

Bonus Don Frye Greatness - On the preliminary card fights: "That was like prison sex: hard, sweaty, violent and there was a lot of noise."

Next Round For Don Frye: “The Best Of Don Frye Color Commentary: Volume One”…you know you want it.
