FIVE ROUNDS WITH UFC ULTIMATE FIGHT NIGHT 22

By David Tees on 9/17/2010 1:05 PM
This past Wednesday Night say the return of the UFC to Spike TV, plus the continued rise of a middleweight fighter and the fall of two UFC Ultimate Fighter winners. Also, lightweight fighter Charles Oliveira shocked the world by defeating UFC Ultimate Fighter champion Efrain Escudero.

Round One: Grease-gate It Isn’t!

Rousimar Palhares didn’t get knocked out at UFC Ultimate Fight Night 22 due to lack of defensive skills, it was because he didn’t realize the fight halted at his whim. Rousimar Palhares attempted to use a leg lock on opponent Nate Marquardt, who easily slipped out of the hold, which lead to Rousimar Palhares attempting to tell the ref that his opponent was greased up. The lapse of judgment wound up costing Rousimar Palhares, as Nate Marquardt jumped on his opponent and pounded him until the referee stopped the fight. Just for those who are wondering, ringside officials checked on Nate Marquardt and deemed that he wasn’t greased up in any form.

Next Round For Nate Marquardt: Yushin Okami, Vitor Belfort or the Chael Sonnen/Anderson Silva loser.

Next Round For Rousimar Palhares: Damian Maia or Alan Belcher

Round Two: UFC Ultimate Fighter Champions Go Winless

There was a very small group of people who thought Charles Oliveira would defeat Efrain Escudero, I was not part of the group. Charles Oliveira showed an amazing amount of highlight reel striking before finally forcing Efrain Escudero to tap out to the rear naked choke hold. The second UFC Ultimate Fighter winner to go down was Ross Pearson, who was also choked out by opponent Cole Miller. Cole Miller, in a post fight press conference, stated that he felt he was a top contender to the UFC Lightweight Title.

Next Round For Charles Oliveira: Greg Soto or Mark Bocek

Next Round For Cole Miller: Jim Miller, Gleison Tibau and Tyson Griffin

Next Round For Ross Pearson: Mac Danzig or Matt Wiman

Next Round For Efrain Escudero: Andre Winner or Melvin Guillard

Round Three: A New Contender For The UFC Lightweight Title

After winning his fifth straight encounter in the UFC, I believe it is time for Jim Miller to be deemed a contender to the UFC Lightweight Title. However, with a rather unconvincing victory over Gleison Tibau, Jim Miller may need one or two more victories to get a title shot. Assuming Jim Miller could win the UFC Lightweight Title and his brother Dan Miller could one day capture the UFC Middleweight Title, which could make them the first ever brother pair to simultaneously hold UFC gold. After a long run in the UFC, Jim Miller could finally be on his way to gaining gold in the UFC Lightweight Division.

Next Round For Jim Miller: BJ Penn or Kenny Florian

Next Round For Gleison Tibau: John Gunderson or Greg Soto

Round Four: The Uncrowned Champion Returns

After a recent battle in the Bellator Fighting Championships, Yves Edwards made his long anticipated return to the UFC at UFC Ultimate Fight Night 22. Prior to UFC reinstating the UFC Lightweight Title at UFC 64, Yves Edwards was dominating the division without a title to fight for. Yves Edwards returned to the UFC successfully after defeating John Gunderson on a preliminary card encounter. Hopefully, the Yves Edwards of old can return and become a dominant force in the UFC for one last run.

Next Round For Yves Edwards: A rematch with Joe Stevenson or a match with Tyson Griffin.

Next Round For John Gunderson: Mark Bocek or Andre Winner

Round Five: The Forrest Was Chopped Down

Brian Foster is a fighter who has been on the verge of becoming a breakout performer in the UFC and his most recent victory over Forrest Petz may have given him that push. It just over a minute in the first round, Brian Foster destroyed Forrest Petz with a series of strikes that caused the referee to halt the fight. While Brian Foster has been competing in the UFC for over a year now, this victory over a UFC veteran may give him an opportunity to compete on a bigger stage. Now, I’m not here to name Brian Foster a top contender to the UFC Welterweight Title, but he is a player in the division now.

Next Round For Brian Foster: Paulo Thiago or Mike Guymon

Next Round For Forrest Petz: A release from the UFC.
