Round One: A Knee To End It All
For the first fourteen minutes of the UFC 119 main event, the crowd in attendance and those watching the show at home thought the evening was ending with its fifth straight decision. However, with a minute left in the festivities, Frank Mir delivered a powerful knee strike to Mirko Cro Cop and the Croatian fighter when down and out a few seconds later. Frank Mir, after an exciting knockout victory, will get another opportunity to climb the ladder to get back into battle with Brock Lesnar. While the legendary Mirko Cro Cop will have to clear the cobwebs and consider if an octagon return is in his best interest.
Next Round For Frank Mir: Ben Rothwell, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira or Roy Nelson
Next Round For Mirko Cro Cop: Joey Beltran, Matt Mitrione or Sean McCorkle
Round Two: The Dark Side Has Taken Over
When I sat down earlier this week and wrote my UFC 119 PPV predictions, I predicted that Antonio Rogerio Nogueira would defeat Ryan Bader, I was wrong on that one. Although he was nearly finished in a few instances, Ryan Bader controlled Antonio Rogerio Nogueira on route to a decision victory. Unlike his fellow season eight co-winner of the UFC Ultimate Fighter, Efrain Escudero, it seems that Ryan Bader has secured his spot in the UFC for now. As for Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, it seems a trip to the drawing board is required before a return to the UFC.
Next Round For Ryan Bader: Rich Franklin, Chuck Liddell or Thiago Silva
Next Round For Antonio Rogerio Nogueira: A rematch with Jason Brilz or Jon Jones
Round Three: Its “Lights Out†For The “Terrorâ€
Comparing this fighter to their battle at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 4 Finale is like comparing a Little Debbie Snack Cake to a butt brownie. While this fight will never go down in the lure of other great UFC battles, this fight showed just how far two guys will go for a UFC Fight Of The Night Bonus. Chris Lytle would walk away from the fight with a unanimous decision victory and now finds himself on the outskirts of a UFC Welterweight Title opportunity. Matt Serra now finds himself nowhere near an opportunity at the gold he once held, but the role of welterweight gatekeeper suits him well.
Next Round For Chris Lytle: Nate Diaz, Dan Hardy or Jon Fitch
Next Round For Matt Serra: Dong Hyun Kim or Thiago Alves
Round Four: Evan Dunham Went Swimming With The Muscle Shark
Controversial as it may be, at the end of the day, former UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk defeated the previously undefeated Evan Dunham. While the loss became the first of Evan Dunham’s career, the victory for Sean Sherk has re-established him in the UFC Lightweight Division. The loss shouldn’t hurt Evan Dunham much in the long run, as he already holds a victory over UFC stalwarts Tyson Griffin and Terry Etim. Sean Sherk, who has returned to his grinding ways, has now found himself with an opportunity to regain dominance in the UFC Lightweight Division.
Next Round For Sean Sherk: Takanori Gomi, Kenny Florian or Jim Miller
Next Round For Evan Dunham: Joe Stevenson, Andre Winner or Melvin Guillard
Round Five: The Doberman Is Off The Leash
Ever since losing the UFC Ultimate Fighter 7 crown to Amir Sadollah, CB Dollaway has been out of the sight of many UFC followers. However, after ending the seven fight winning streak of Joe Doerkson, CB Dollaway now is in everybody’s line of sight. CB Dollaway put Joe Doerkson away early in round one with a guillotine choke that showed the poise and intelligence of a well rounded warrior. As for Joe Doerkson, I believe the longtime MMA veteran deserves one more shot in the world famous octagon.
Next Round For CB Dollaway: Dan Miller, Rousimar Palhares or Dong Hyun Kim
Next Round For Joe Doerkson: Aaron Simpson, Jorge Rivera or Alessio Sakara
