FIVE ROUNDS WITH WEC 51: ALDO VS. GAMBURYAN

By David Tees on 10/2/2010 10:27 PM
Despite a little head to head competition with Bellator Fighting Championships, WEC delivered one of their better events of the year. On the card, WEC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo dominated UFC Ultimate Fighter 5 finalist Manny Gamburyan and the rivalry between Donald Cerrone and Jamie Varner continued on.

Round One: Who Can Stop Jose Aldo?

Very few people outside of Manny Gamburyan’s family gave the fighter any chance of victory, Jose Aldo would up proving his family wrong. Jose Aldo, seeming in Frank Mir/Mirko Cro Cop mode for round one, exploded in round two and knocked Manny Gamburyan into oblivion. Manny Gamburyan now adds his name to a long list of WEC fighters who weren’t able to overcome Jose Aldo. The real question is, which fighter, inside or outside of the WEC, can stop WEC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo?

Next Round For Jose Aldo: Chad Mendes or Mark Hominick

Next Round For Manny Gamburyan: George Roop, Chan Sung Jung or Leonard Garcia

Round Two: The Rivalry Is Far From Over

Two fighters who will never be considered friends are Jamie Varner and Donald Cerrone, who proved hatred can be entertaining inside the cage. Barely a second after the bell sounded, Donald Cerrone charged at Jamie Varner and clobbered him with a knee strike. Donald Cerrone also caught Jamie Varner off guard throughout the fight with several takedowns, which Donald Cerrone is not known for. Better yet, after achieving a decision victory, Donald Cerrone challenged Jamie Varner for a third battle at WEC 53 in December.

Next Round For Donald Cerrone: A third encounter with Jamie Varner.

Next Round For Jamie Varner: A third encounter with Donald Cerrone.

Round Three: The Champion Is Back

After dropping his WEC Bantamweight Title to Brian Bowles and then suffering a defeat to Joseph Benavidez, Miguel Torres finally bounced back from his two fight losing streak by defeating Charlie Valencia at WEC 51. Miguel Torres showed a much improved striking game, especially in the second round when he clobbered Charlie Valencia on route to a submission win. Miguel Torres now repositions himself near the top of the WEC Bantamweight Division, but still needs a few more victories before getting a title shot. Sadly, it seems that Charlie Valencia is heading back to the preliminary cards, but he could always rebound.

Next Round For Miguel Torres: Urijah Faber or a rematch with Brian Bowles or Joseph Benavidez

Next Round For Charlie Valencia: Joseph Benavidez or the Scott Jorgensen/Dominick Cruz loser

Round Four: George Roop Killed The Zombie

Chan Sung Jung lost one of the most exciting fights in WEC history to Leonard Garcia at WEC 48, now Chan Sung Jung lost via one of the more exciting knockouts in WEC history to George Roop at WEC 51. Early in the second round, George Roop clobbered Chan Sung Jung with a head kick that left the fighter unconscious on the mat below. George Roop, who found very little success in the UFC, may have found a good home now to find success in the WEC. As for the zombie, two exciting losses may not give the undead fighter a third opportunity in the WEC.

Next Round For George Roop: Manny Gamburyan, Mark Hominick or Leonard Garcia

Next Round For Chan Sung Jung: Spending time outside of the WEC.

Round Five: There Was Another Show On Thursday Night

Opposite of an excellent WEC event on Versus, the Bellator Fighting Championships put on an event on Fox Sports Net. The event was highlighted by appearances from UFC veteran Yoshiyuki Yoshida and female MMA legend Megumi Fujii. Here are the quick results of the event…

* Megumi Fujii def. Lisa Ward by submission

* Zoila Frosto def. Jessica Aguilar by decision

* Chris Lozano def. Yoshiyuki Yoshida by TKO
