FIVE ROUNDS WITH UFC 120: BISPING VS. AKIYAMA

By David Tees on 10/18/2010 7:43 PM
The UFC returned to the UK for the first time in over seven months this past Saturday Night and the card featured the end of an undefeated streak and the potential knockout of the year. Also, Michael Bisping inched himself one fight closer to a potential UFC Middleweight Title opportunity.

Round One: “The Count” Gets Closer To “The Spider”

There can be no doubt that out of all the fighters who have entered the UFC from the UK, Michael Bisping is the most successful of them all. After a shaky opening round against Yoshihiro Akiyama, Michael Bisping found his striking prowess to outpoint his opponent on route to a unanimous decision victory. Michael Bisping, in the post fight press conference, stated that he believes that he is a single victory away from a UFC Middleweight Title fight. As for Yoshihiro Akiyama, a drop down to the UFC Welterweight Division could be the key to future success in the UFC.

Next Round For Michael Bisping: The Nate Marquardt/Yushin Okami loser or a rematch with Wanderlei Silva

Next Round For Yoshihiro Akiyama: Alessio Sakara, Jorge Rivera or Steve Cantwell

Round Two: “The Outlaw” Has Been Destroyed

Most people assumed that Dan Hardy, coming off a UFC Welterweight Title loss, would defeat Carlos Condit on route to a rematch with Georges St. Pierre. However, Carlos Condit had other ideas and knocked out his heavily favored opponent in the opening round. Carlos Condit now looks like he is back in the form that saw him dominate the WEC Welterweight Division for a few years. Dan Hardy, who must be given credit for not making excuses for the loss, looks like he is now at the bottom of the UFC Welterweight Division pool.

Next Round For Carlos Condit: Jake Shields, Martin Kampmann or Jon Fitch

Next Round For Dan Hardy: Thiago Alves, Paulo Thiago or Claude Patrick

Round Three: The Streak Is Over

Notable UFC fighters such as Diego Sanchez and Paul Kelly have fallen to John Hathaway, but Mike Pyle ended up not being part of that list. The undefeated streak of John Hathaway, fourteen wins total, sunk into the quicksand courtesy of Mike Pyle this past Saturday Night. John Hathaway showed true toughness in the fight, as he was locked in an inverted triangle choke while getting punched in the head for the majority of the second round. While his fourteen fight undefeated streak is over, John Hathaway still has a bright future ahead of him in the UFC.

Next Round For Mike Pyle: Paulo Thiago, Martin Kampmann or Chris Lytle

Next Round For John Hathaway: Marcus Davis, Claude Patrick or Matt Brown

Round Four: Maybe In France, Grabbing Men’s Shorts Is A Sign Of Respect

At one time in the UFC, Cheick Kongo was on top of a list of the best heavyweights currently in the UFC, that can all be laid to rest now. Cheick Kongo has gone from a fighter known for his dominating style to a fighters known for low blows and shorts grabbing. Sadly, the attention from this fight was taken away from Travis Browne, who put on a decent performance in the fights opening and closing round. Outside of the short fight with Frank Mir, there isn’t a fight that Cheick Kongo participated in since UFC 70 that I don’t remember him not hitting an opponent with a low blow.

Next Round For Cheick Kongo: A rematch with Travis Browne

Next Round For Travis Browne: A rematch with Cheick Kongo

Round Five: James Wilks…Claude Patrick, Where Did You Go?

If anybody went to UFC.com prior to the card airing on Spike TV, you would’ve seen a main card fight pitting James Wilks against Claude Patrick listed. However, when the broadcast aired on Spike TV, a bout between Alexander Gustaffson and Cyrille Diabate aired in its place. According to the rumor mill, the bout was pulled from the tape delayed card because it was “boring” and apparently not up to the standard of a televised UFC bout. For those not in the know, Claude Patrick wound up defeating James Wilks by unanimous decision after three rounds of action.

Next Round For Claude Patrick: Matt Brown, Brian Foster or Paulo Thiago

Next Round For James Wilks: To become the third UFC Ultimate Fighter Champion released by the UFC.
