PREVIEWING THE UFC 123: RAMPAGE VS. MACHIDA PRELIMINARY CARD

UFC Lightweight Division Fight

Nik “The Carnie” Lentz (19-3-2) vs. Tyson Griffin (14-4-0)

Nik Lentz is currently undefeated in UFC competition, having defeated Rafaello Oliveira, Robert Emerson and Andre Winner. Nik Lentz also competed in the EFX MMA promotion, defeating Derek Abram, Kenneth Allen, Chris Powers, Carey Vanier, Vern Jefferson and Duran Barlow, while suffering a lone defeat to Brian Green. This fight will be the fourth fight of 2010 for Nik Lentz, as he won two of three and the other fight going to a draw. Nik Lentz will be entering the fight riding a ten fight winning streak, which has lasted over three years. Nik Lentz will be looking to put the fight on the ground, with seven victories coming by way of submission. Tyson Griffin has had a successful run in the UFC, defeating David Lee, Clay Guida, Thiago Tavares, Gleison Tibau, Marcus Aurelio, Rafael Dos Anjos and Hermes Franca, while suffering defeats to Frankie Edgar, Sean Sherk, Evan Dunham and Takanori Gomi. Tyson Griffin has also competed in the Strikeforce promotion, defeating Duane Ludwig by TKO in the opening round. Prior to entering the UFC in late 2006, Tyson Griffin had defeated former WEC Featherweight Champion Urijah Faber at a Gladiator Challenge event. Tyson Griffin will be entering the fight trying to stop a two fight losing streak, which has lasted over four months. Tyson Griffin will be looking to use his striking skills to win the fight, with six victories coming by knockout.

UFC Lightweight Division Fight

Paul “Telly’s” Kelly (10-3-0) vs. TJ “The Spider” O’Brien (16-3-0)

Paul Kelly has had a successful run in the UFC, defeating Paul Taylor, Troy Mandaloniz, Roli Delgado and Matt Veach, while suffering defeats to Marcus Davis, Denis Siver and Jacob Volkmann. Despite competing in the UFC for nearly two years, Paul Taylor has only had one of his seven UFC fights occur in North America. Paul Kelly also fought in the Cage Gladiators promotion, defeating Jordan James by TKO in the second round. Paul Kelly has split both his fights thus far in 2010, defeating Matt Veach and suffering a defeat to Jacob Volkmann. Paul Kelly will be looking to use his striking skills to win the fight, with four victories coming by knockout. TJ O’Brien will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he is a veteran of the Midwest Cage Championships promotion. While in the Midwest Cage Championships, TJ O’Brien defeated Steve Young, Adam Cunningham, Nick Walker, Will Shutt, Chris Perez Van Dam, Josh Atwell, Jeremy Castro, Jake Brown and Josh Henry, while suffering a lone defeat to Chris Mickle. TJ O’Brien was a cast member on the UFC Ultimate Fighter 12, which is currently airing on Spike TV. TJ O’Brien will be entering the fight riding a six fight winning streak, which has lasted well over a year. TJ O’Brien will be looking to put the fight on the ground, with fifteen victories coming by way of submission.

UFC Lightweight Division Fight

Edson Mendes Barboza Jr. (6-0-0) vs. Mike Lullo (8-1-0)

Edson Mendes Barboza Jr. will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he is a veteran of the Renaissance MMA promotion. While in Renaissance MMA, Edson Mendes Barboza Jr. the duo of defeated Lee King twice and Jose Figueroa . Of his six professional MMA fights, none have gone to a decision for Edson Mendes Barboza Jr., which speaks to his finishing abilities. Edson Mendes Barboza Jr. will be entering the fight riding a six fight undefeated streak, which has lasted over a year. Edson Mendes Barboza Jr. will be looking to use his striking skills to win the fight, with five victories coming by knockout. Mike Lullo will also be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he is a veteran of the Xtreme Fighting Organization. While in the Xtreme Fighting Organization, Mike Lullo defeated Cliff Wright, Jerry Brown and Jay Little, while suffering a lone defeat to Gustavo Rodriquez. It has been just over a month since Mike Lullo last had an MMA fight, so conditioning could be a factor in the fight. Mike Lullo will be entering the fight riding an eight fight winning streak, which has lasted over two years. Mike Lullo will be looking to put the fight on the ground, with six victories coming by way of submission.

UFC Welterweight Division Fight

Dennis “Superman” Hallman (49-13-2) vs. Karo “The Heat” Parisyan (19-5-0)

Dennis Hallman has had an unsuccessful run in the UFC, defeating Matt Hughes and Ben Saunders, while suffering defeats to Jens Pulver, Frank Trigg, Jorge Rivera and John Howard. Dennis Hallman has been competing in professional MMA for over fourteen years, making him one of the most experienced fighters currently in the UFC. Dennis Hallman has also competed in Strikeforce, defeating the duo of Jeremiah Metcalf and Justin Davis. Dennis Hallman is currently undefeated in 2010, defeating the aforementioned Ben Saunders at UFC 117. Dennis Hallman will be looking to put the fight on the ground, with thirty eight victories coming by way of submission. Karo Parisyan has had a successful run in the UFC, defeating Dave Strasser, Nick Diaz, Chris Lytle, Matt Serra, Nick Thompson, Drew Fickett, Josh Burkman and Ryo Chonnan, while suffering defeats to Georges St. Pierre, Diego Sanchez and Thiago Alves. Karo Parisyan most recently competed in the Impact FC promotion, defeating Ben Mortimer by submission. Karo Parisyan also made an appearance on the UFC Ultimate Fighter 5, as his cousin Manny Gamburyan was a contestant on the show. Karo Parisyan is currently undefeated in 2010, defeating the aforementioned Ben Mortimer this past Summer. Karo Parisyan will be looking to put the fight on the ground, with ten victories coming by way of submission.
