UFC 125: RESOLUTION PRELIMINARY CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 12/29/2010 7:59 PM
The first UFC event of the year is taking place this Saturday Night when UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar defends the gold against Gray Maynard in the headliner of UFC 125. In the evenings co-headliner, TUF alumni Chris Leben takes on former WEC Light Heavyweight Champion Brian Stann. Before the pay-per-view takes place, the UFC 125 preliminary card will go down as former WEC fighters and a top lightweight prospect all do battle.

The preliminary card action will kick off with the anticipated UFC debut on Antonio “Mandingo” McKee (25-3-2) taking on Jacob “Christmas” Volkmann (11-2-0) in a lightweight encounter. Many longtime UFC fans have been clamoring for the debut of Antonio McKee, who enters the fight riding a fourteen fight winning streak. His opponent will be UFC veteran Jacob Volkmann, who has rebounded with two victories after losing his first two UFC fights. The key to this fight will be whether or not Jacob Volkmann can stop the relentless ground game of Antonio McKee. Jacob Volkmann’s success in the UFC has mainly been against strikers, which is why the ground game of Antonio McKee will give him a successful UFC debut.

Welterweights will be doing battle next as Daniel “Ninja” Roberts (11-1-0) will be dueling with Greg Soto (8-1-0). Daniel Roberts is a fighter on the verge of a potential breakout in 2011, especially after defeating longtime King Of The Cage veteran Mike Guymon at UFC 121. Greg Soto is a New Jersey based fighter who is best known in UFC circles for losing to TUF alumni Matthew Riddle by disqualification with an illegal up kick at UFC 111. This fight will be coming down to who brings the better stand up, which the advantage will be given to Daniel Roberts in that department.

History is made next in the final un-televised fights of UFC 125 as former WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Brown (24-6-0) takes on Diego “The Gun” Nunes (15-1-0) in the first featherweight fight on a UFC pay-per-view card. Mike Brown does have previous experience in the UFC, suffering a defeat to Genki Sudo at UFC 47 in April 2004. Diego Nunes was one of the more dominant fighters in the WEC Featherweight Division, winning four of five fights in the promotion. If Mike Brown is back to the form of old, then expect him to get a good start in his return to the Ultimate Fighting Championships.
