STRIKEFORCE CHALLENGERS 13 TELEVISED CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 1/6/2011 11:10 PM
The question that gets asked prior to every Strikeforce Challengers event is a simple one, which fighters will graduate to the main card? There are plenty of fighters looking to be on the graduating class and one particular female being groomed for a title opportunity.

Headlining this card is a welterweight clash as Tyron “T-Wood” Woodley (7-0-0) takes on Tarec “Sponge” Caffeine (10-2-0). This fight will essentially give the winner a free pass all the way up to the bigger Strikeforce cards and events. Tyron Woodley is a dominant wrestler who already holds five victories in Strikeforce and has even challenged Nick Diaz for a title fight. Tarec Saffiedine is coming off his pay-per-view debut as he defeated UFC veteran Brock Larson at Shark Fights 13. Despite the major victory, Tyron Woodley is a far superior wrestler, which is what will guide him to a victory.

The co-main event of the evening will be a heavyweight tilt as Daniel Cormier (6-0-0) faces Devin Cole (18-8-1). Daniel Cormier has achieved a lot already in his young MMA career, as he is the current King Of The Cage Heavyweight Champion. Devin Cole is a long time International Fight League veteran who has fought top UFC heavyweight contender Ben Rothwell. Despite the experience advantage, Devin Cole is not at the level of Daniel Cormier, who will ground and pound his way to a victory.

The potential breakout fighter of 2011 competes next as Ovince St. Preux (9-4-0) takes on Ron “Abongo” Humphrey (7-2-0) in a light heavyweight battle. Ovince St. Preux is coming off of two straight victories in Strikeforce over top ranked Antwain Britt and Benji Radach. Ron Humphrey will go down in Strikeforce history because he faced Brett Rogers in the first ever Strikeforce fight on Showtime. Each fighter is a talented striker, but Ovince St. Preux is sharper than Ron Humphrey, which will get him the duke on Friday Night.

The females compete next as Julia “The Jewel” Budd (1-0-0) takes on Amanda “Lioness Of The Ring” Nunes (5-1-0) in middleweight action. Julia Budd fought her only professional MMA fight in Strikeforce, where she defeated Shana Olsen by TKO. Immediately after the fight, the rookie fighter was being groomed for a potential fight with Cristiane Santos. Amanda Nunes enters the fight riding a five fight winning streak and has yet to have a fight goes past the second round. As good as Amanda Nunes is, Julia Budd has to much strength to not walk away with a victory on route to more title talk.

The evening will kick off with light heavyweights as Rhadi Ferguson (2-0-0) takes on late replacement John Richard (1-1-0). Rhadi Ferguson only made his professional MMA debut a little over four months ago and has already racked up two wins. John Richard is a late replacement for Ion Cherdivara, who was pulled from the fight after having visa issues. Being a late replacement against Rhadi Ferguson is what is going to cost John Richard the fight on Friday Night.
