Following the rotator cuff injury, Junior Dos Santos could have sat on the sidelines until the champion recovered, much like Rashad Evans has done with Mauricio Rua. Instead, Junior Dos Santos has chosen both competition and celebrity as he will coach opposite of Brock Lesnar on the next season of the UFC Ultimate Fighter.
After the reality show has concluded, Junior Dos Santos will fight Brock Lesnar, currently on the schedule for either UFC 130 or IFC 131. As of this writing, the Junior Dos Santos/Brock Lesnar winner will then challenge the injured champion for the UFC Heavyweight Title. It seems that with his choice, Junior Dos Santos has a lot to lose and seemingly nothing at all to be gaining.
Those not paying to much attention to the last three paragraphs may be wondering what Junior Dos Santos has to lose. That in which the fighter has to lose is his UFC Heavyweight Title shot, which could be Brock Lesnar’s to gain. While Junior Dos Santos can lose that career defining title shot, he does have something very interesting to gain if he were to defeat the former WWE star.
What the Brazilian fighter has to gain from defeating Brock Lesnar is that he will knock the fighter out of title contention. So if we were to assume that Junior Dos Santos were to defeat Brock Lesnar and then go onto win the UFC Heavyweight Title, then he potentially would not have to defend the title against the former champion for a considerable amount of time.
Now, lets take under consideration that Brock Lesnar were to defeat Junior Dos Santos, the fighter would then lose his title opportunity. Logically, that loss could then push Junior Dos Santos far down the ladder for another title shot, potentially behind the likes of Roy Nelson, Shane Carwin, Frank Mir, Stefan Struve and others.
Also, a potential victory for Junior Dos Santos could spell the end of the UFC career for Brock Lesnar, who was recently rumored to be making a professional wrestling return. It has been widely rumored by many within the MMA community that after suffering the defeat to Cain Velasquez that Brock Lesnar has been possibly wanting out of MMA in general.
Whatever one thinks of Junior Dos Santos’s decision making abilities, there are definitely more arguments that could be made for Junior Dos Santos risking more than what the potential reward is worth.
