UFC FIGHTS FOR THE TROOPS II PRELIMINARY CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 1/19/2011 12:01 PM
Outside of the yearly WWE Tribute To The Troops events, the UFC Fights For The Troops events are some of my favorite events to watch each year. Although the first event was considered a UFC Ultimate Fight Night event, the event was contested in front of the troops and Diego Sanchez defeated Joe Riggs, while Josh Koscheck defeated Yoshiyuki Yoshida in the first official event. This event is headlined by a key lightweight division battle as Evan Dunham takes on TUF alumni Melvin Guillard.

The event opens up with a bantamweight encounter as Chris “Kamikaze” Cariaso (10-2-0) takes on Will Capuano (8-3-0). Chris Cariaso makes his UFC debut in this fight after going .500 in the WEC, defeating Rafael Rebello and suffering a defeat to Renan Do Nascimento Mota Pegado. Will Campuzano has already competed once in the UFC, losing to Nick Pace at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale. This fight will determine who stays with the promotion and who will receive that dreaded pink slip from the UFC. Will Campuzano will be walking away with the victory here, as his superior striking skills will net him the victory.

The welterweights are doing battle next as Amilcar Alves (11-2-0) will go to war with Charlie “The Spaniard” Brenneman (12-2-0). Amilcar Alves is currently winless in the UFC after losing to Mike Pierce at UFC 118: Edgar vs. Penn II in August 2010. Outside of that one UFC fight with Mike Pierce, Amilcar Alves has fought the majority of his career in Brazil. Charlie Brenneman has also competed in the UFC, defeating Jason High and suffering a defeat to Johny Hendricks. Charlie Brenneman is the superior striker of the two fighters, which is the advantage that will give the fighter the win.

The lightweights are on the card next as Willamy “Chiquerim” Freire (18-3-0) will do battle with Waylon Lowe (9-3-0). Willamy Freire will be making his UFC debut in this fight after a considerably long run overseas in the Shooto promotion. In his last Shooto fight of record, Willamy Freire defeated Yusuke Endo by split decision in May 2010. Waylon Lowe has fought twice already in the UFC, defeating Steve Lopez and suffering a defeat to Melvin Guillard. Despite having the UFC experience advantage, Waylon Lowe does not have the skills to put away Willamy Freire, who will walk away victorious.

The final preliminary card fight of the evening will pit featherweights Mike Brown (24-7-0) against Rani Yahya (15-6-0). Mike Brown is a former WEC Featherweight Champion, as he defeated Urijah Faber at WEC 36 to win the gold. Mike Brown could be fighting to avoid the evil UFC pink slip, as he has lost in his previous two UFC appearances. Rani Yahya will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he does hold a victory over current UFC Featherweight Title top contender Mark Hominick. Rani Yahya may also be competing for a job, as he lost his last two encounters in the WEC before heading to the UFC. Rani Yahya should walk away with the victory here because Mike Brown, as he has shown in his last few fights, doesn’t seem to have his head in the game anymore.
