UFC FIGHTS FOR THE TROOPS II TELEVISED CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 1/21/2011 11:34 AM
There is something special to be said about an promotion of any kind that is willing to put on an event just for our troops. The UFC is doing just that on Saturday Night and they are putting an event together with many future title opportunities on the line. There are fights in the lightweight, featherweight and heavyweight divisions that all have potential future title implications on the line.

Headlining this unique card is a lightweight encounter as Evan Dunham (11-1-0) does battle with TUF alumni Melvin “The Young Assassin” Guillard (26-8-2). Evan Dunham is coming off a loss to former UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk at UFC 119, a fight in which the majority of folks thought the young fighter had won. Melvin Guillard is coming off a somewhat career resurgence after earning victories over Ronys Torres, Waylon Lowe and Jeremy Stephens. The winner of this fight will no doubt find themselves in the top five of the UFC Lightweight Division, currently championed by Frankie Edgar. Evan Dunham is a far superior fighter on the ground when compared to Melvin Guillard, which is why he will walk away with the victory.

The co-headliner of the evening is a key heavyweight division fight as Tim “The Thrashing Machine” Hague (12-4-0) faces over with TUF alumni Matt “Meathead” Mitrione (3-0-0). Tim Hague has not really shined at all in the UFC, losing three of his four fights in the promotion, with his lone win coming over Pat Barry. Matt Mitrione has looked sharp after competing on the UFC Ultimate Fighter 10, even defeating Kimbo Slice at UFC 113. Tim Hague is coming off one of the more impressive victories in his MMA career, defeating UFC veteran Travis Wiuff in October 2010. This fight is going to come down to striking and Matt Mitriones odd style of striking will notch him the victory.

The winner of this next fight will determine who is going to face UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo, as Mark “The Machine” Hominick (19-8-0) faces off with George Roop (11-6-1). This fight will mark the UFC return of Mark Hominick, who hasn’t competed in the promotion in over four years. Mark Hominick had a decent run in the WEC, winning three of five encounters during his time in the promotion. George Roop is also making his return to the UFC, as he hasn’t seen action in the promotion in over a year. George Roop is coming off the biggest win of his career, defeating Chan Sung Jung by knockout at WEC 51. The real interesting fact to know heading into this fight is that both fighters are part of the same camp, Team Tompkins. Mark Hominick is the more experienced fighter heading into the fight and that experience will earn that man the victory and title shot.

Two powerful heavyweights will square off next as Pat “HD” Barry (5-2-0) does battle with Joey “Mexicutioner” Beltran (12-4-0). This is a make or break fight for Pat Barry, as he has gone two and four thus far in the promotion, coming off a loss to Mirko Cro Cop. Joey Beltran has gone two and three in the promotion, most notable defeating Rolles Gracie by TKO at UFC 109. These two opponents have both fought a common foe in the UFC, Tim Hague, who Joey Beltran defeated and Pat Barry lost to. This fight is a classic striker versus grappler encounter, in which the grappling Joey Beltran will earn himself the win.

The opening contest of the evening will be a lightweight tilt as Cole “Magrinho” Miller (17-4-0) takes on “Handsome” Matt Wiman (12-5-0). Cole Miller is easily one of the more underrated fighters in the lightweight division, having won six of eight fights in the UFC. Matt Wiman is coming off one of the most controversial victories of 2010, when he defeated Mac Danzig by submission at UFC 115 after a referee’s error during a triangle choke. Cole Miller is the more well rounded of the two fighters and that is what’s going to gain him the victory over the “Handsome” fighter.
