STRIKEFORCE: DIAZ VS. CYBORG TELEVISED CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 1/28/2011 10:39 PM
The first major Strikeforce card of the year is definitely an impressive one as there will be two titles on the line. In the main event, Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz defends against Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos and Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza defends against Robbie Lawler in the co-main event. Also, NFL and NCAA Hall Of Fame member Herschel Walker will make his return to the Strikeforce cage.

In the evenings main event, the Strikeforce Welterweight Title will be defended as champion Nick Diaz (23-7-0) defends against Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos (18-13-0). This will be the second defense of the gold for Nick Diaz, who successfully defended the title against KJ Noons at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Noons II. Evangelista Santos earned himself a title opportunity after defeating DREAM Welterweight Champion Marius Zaromskis at Strikeforce: Los Angeles. This fight is going to pit the superior ground game of Nick Diaz against the powerful striking of Evangelista Santos. When it is all said and done, Nick Diaz will retain the gold over “Cyborg” by using his superior ground skills.

The co-main event will be for the Strikeforce Middleweight Title as champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza (13-2-0) defends against “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (18-6-0). Ronaldo Souza won the gold at Strikeforce: Houston when he defeated Tim Kennedy by unanimous decision. Robbie Lawler has won two of his last three fights in Strikeforce, recently defeating Matt Lindland by knockout. This fight may wind up being similar to the Nick Diaz/Evangelista Santos fight, as a superior striker is facing a superior ground fighter. Much like the main event, I’m going with the superior ground skills of Ronaldo Souza to defeat the talented Robbie Lawler.

The return of a football legend is up next as Herschel Walker (1-0-0) takes on Scott Carson (4-1-0) in heavyweight action. Herschel Walker made his professional MMA debut a little under a year ago, defeating Scott Nagy by TKO. Despite having more overall MMA experience than his opponent, Scott Carson has only had one MMA fight in the last decade. This fight was originally set to take place this past December, but Herschel Walker pulled out of the fight after a training camp injury. Despite being the less experienced fighter, Herschel Walker should be able to ground and pound his way to another victory.

Opening up the evening’s festivities will be a light heavyweight encounter as Roger Gracie (3-0-0) takes on Trevor Langley (23-6-1). Despite competing in only three fights, Roger Gracie has already defeated top fighters like Kevin Randleman and Ron Waterman. Trevor Prangley is the current Shark Fights Light Heavyweight Champion and is coming off a victory over UFC veteran Keith Jardine. This fight could mark a potential top contender to the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Title, which is part of a very shallow talent pool of fighters. Roger Gracie will live up to the Gracie Family name as he submits Trevor Prangley on route to a victory.
