STRIKEFORCE CHALLENGERS 14 TELEVISED CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 2/17/2011 1:44 PM
With the great Strikeforce card that took place last weekend, one must wonder how Strikeforce plans on following it all up. Strikeforce will attempt to continue the streak on Friday Night by bringing us the next edition of Strikeforce Challengers. This card will feature a few Strikeforce veterans, a son of a UFC legend and a former WEC veteran.

Headlining this card is a lightweight encounter as Lyle “Fancy Pants” Beerbohm (15-0-0) takes on Pat “Bam Bam” Healy (25-17-0). Lyle Beerbohm has a lengthy undefeated record that includes victories over UFC veteran Duane Ludwig and international star Vitor Ribeiro. Pat Healy made his Strikeforce debut this past June, losing to former Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson. This fight is definitely going to determine who graduates to the bigger Strikeforce cards, and that honor will go to Lyle Beerbohm.

The welterweights will battle in the co-headliner as WEC veteran Carlo “Neo” Prater (25-10-1) takes on Bryan Travers (14-2-0). Carlo Prater is coming off an interesting run in the Shine Fights Lightweight Grand Prix, where he lost in the finals to Drew Fickett. Bryan Travers will be making his second Strikeforce appearance in this fight, but he has fought the majority of his fights in the Gladiator Challenge promotion. This fight should be an interesting ground battle, which Carlo Prater will be winning by way of submission.

A pair of lightweights will duel next as Ryan Couture (1-0-0) will do battle with the undefeated Lee Higgins (2-0-0). Ryan Couture made his professional MMA debut at Strikeforce Challengers 10, defeating Lucas Stark by submission. Lee Higgins made his professional MMA debut only three months ago, but has finished by of his opponents in fewer than five minutes total. This fight will be a challenging fight for Ryan Couture, but this fight is definitely a fight that the upstart can win.

More welterweights will do battle next as Erik Apple (10-2-0) will be going to war with Ryan Larson (5-2-0). Erik Apple hasn’t fought in well over a year, with his last fight a losing effort to Bobby Voelker at Strikeforce Challengers 5. Ryan Larson will be making his Strikeforce debut in this fight, but he is a longtime veteran of the King Of Kombat promotion. Despite the long layoff, Erik Apple has the skills to put away Ryan Larson and he will do just that on Friday Night.

Kicking off the evening will be a lightweight encounter as David “Tarzan” Douglas (5-2-0) takes on Nick Gonzales (2-0-0). David Douglas has split both of his fights in Strikeforce, losing to Justin Wilcox and defeating Dominic Clark. Nick Gonzales will be making his Strikeforce debut in this fight, but has fought both of his professional MMA fights in Gladiator Challenge. David Douglas will add a sixth knockout to his record on Friday Night as he plows through Nick Gonzales in the opener.
