FIVE ROUNDS WITH UFC 127: PENN VS. FITCH

By David Tees on 3/1/2011 8:27 PM
If there was an eleven letter word that can accurately describe what happened on Saturday Night, it would be “c-o-n-t-r-o-v-e-r-s-y.” Besides the horribly misjudged main event, there was an international incident of sorts between Michael Bisping and Jorge Rivera. The fine folks of Australia got to see several of their countrymen walk away with several big wins at UFC 127.

Round One: You Call That Judging

While the first two rounds of their encounter could be considered close, there can be no doubt that Jon Fitch dominated BJ Penn in the third round. However, two of the three judges in the fight decided to score the fight a tie as one judge deemed Jon Fitch the winner. It what can be described as an incredible statistic, Jon Fitch landed 134 strikes in the third round while BJ Penn landed none. The real question lingering now is whether or not BJ Penn will retire first instead of taking a rematch with Jon Fitch.

Round Two: A Knee To The Noggin, A TKO & A Little Spitting

There can be little doubt that there was a hatred between Michael Bisping and Jorge Rivera as they entered the octagon at UFC 127. Michael Bisping decided to fan those flames when he nailed Jorge Rivera with an illegal knee strike to the head early in the fight, followed by the flipping off of his opponent’s corner men. Then after achieving victory over his heated rival, Michael Bisping decided that hocking a wad of spit at his foe’s trainers was a good idea. The punishment for the actions by Michael Bisping from the UFC has yet to be handed down, but it definitely will be interesting to see.

Round Three: A Contender Drops From The List

There is no doubt in my mind that George Sotiropoulos was a top five fighter in a very crowded UFC Lightweight Division. Then Saturday Night came and went with George Sotiropoulos looking like he lost seven in a row instead of winning seven in a row. What was even more shocking about the fight was that George Sotiropoulos couldn’t get the fight to the ground. Considering that Dennis Siver was a huge underdog on Saturday Night, fighters in the division may want to start looking at him more seriously.

Next Round For Dennis Siver: Jim Miller, Takanori Gomi or Benson Henderson

Next Round For George Sotiropoulos: Nik Lentz, Andre Winner or Tyson Griffin

Round Four: Its Lights Out For Chris Lytle

When Carlos Condit dropped out of the fight against Chris Lytle, he was replaced by a relative unknown in Brian Ebersole. Brian Ebersole entered the octagon with a cartwheel kick and exited the octagon with a victory over a top welterweight contender. Brian Ebersole now finds himself in the mix in the UFC Welterweight Division, which is in dire need of contenders. Chris Lytle, after suffering the defeat to Brian Ebersole, has hinted at a potential retirement in post-fight interviews.

Round Five: Reaching The Ion

While Spike TV has been the home of the UFC since the popularity boost a few years ago, the leading MMA promotion has found a nice little niche with Ion TV. For the second time in the last year, the UFC aired three preliminary fights that even featured UFC Ultimate Fighter winner Ross Pearson. While the UFC will most likely be airing the remaining preliminary cards for 2011 on Spike TV, but it is nice to know that Ion TV is in the background for them.
