STRIKEFORCE: FEIJAO VS. HENDERSON PRELIMINARY CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 3/3/2011 6:02 PM
Despite the recent bad news about the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, Strikeforce returns to action this weekend with two title fights. However, before those fights can take place, there is a six fight preliminary card that must happen first. This events preliminary card features a UFC veteran in Jorge Gurgel and a rising prospect in Roger Bowling.

Kicking off the evening will be a welterweight encounter as newcomer JP Felty (0-0-0) takes on John Kuhner (0-2-0). Although JP Felty is going to be making his professional MMA debut in this fight, he has plenty of experience in amateur MMA fights. John Kuhner does have a slight experience edge over his opponent, but he hasn’t competed in a fight in nearly two years. JP Felty definitely has the ability to become a future prospect and he will prove that with a victory over John Kuhner.

A middleweight battle will be taking place next as Marc Cofer (3-3-0) is going to face off with Mitch Whitesel (15-20-0). Marc Cofer started off his MMA career in impressive fashion with three straight wins, but has suffered three straight losses since. Mitch Whitesel is a very experienced MMA fighter, but he has been on a losing streak as of late, suffering five losses in a row. This fight will not impact the Strikeforce rankings at all, so I’m going with the more experienced Mitch Whitesel to get the win.

Another battle of middleweights will happen next as Ian Rammel (2-1-0) will duel with Brian “The Predator” Rogers (6-2-0). After starting off his career with a loss, Ian Rammel has won two straight fights in the Absolute Action MMA promotion. Brian Rogers will be entering the fight riding a five fight winning streak and has even saw action in the up and coming Shine Fights promotion. This fight should be a slugfest and Brian Rogers will be the winner as he is a far superior striker than his foe.

Heavyweights will take center stage next as Jay “Charlie Manson III” Freeman (5-4-0) takes on Jason “The Juggernaut” Riley (9-5-0). Jay Freeman hasn’t competed in a professional MMA fight in over a year, since he lost to UFC veteran David Heath. Jason Riley is currently winless in Strikeforce after losing to Daniel Cormier at Strikeforce: Houston last year. The long layoff is going to hurt Jay Freeman in this fight as I expect Jason Riley to run through him on route to a victory.

An important lightweight fight will take place next as Billy Vaughan (9-6-0) does battle with Jorge “JG” Gurgel (13-7-0). Billy Vaughan enters this fight as a late replacement for Tyler Combs, who was forced to pull out of the fight after an injury. Jorge Gurgel is best known for his run on the UFC Ultimate Fighter 2, but has only won one of five in recent fights. The lack of preparation time is what’s going to cost Billy Vaughan the fight against Jorge Gurgel, who gets back on track in this one.

Headlining the preliminary card is a welterweight encounter as “Relentless” Roger Bowling (8-1-0) faces Josh Thornburg (5-1-0). Roger Bowling is coming off an exciting two fight series with Bobby Voelker, which saw them split the series at one apiece. Josh Thornburg is a late replacement for Mojo Horne, who had to pull out of the fight after suffering a training camp injury. Like the previous fight, the lack of preparation for Josh Thornburg will cost him the fight against Roger Bowling.
