FIVE ROUNDS WITH UFC ON VERSUS III

By David Tees on 3/5/2011 12:29 PM
The UFC returned to Versus for the first time since the elimination of the WEC this past Thursday Night with UFC On Versus III. The event will be remembered for launching three fighters into title contention in their respective weight classes. A top middleweight prospect made his official UFC debut and another fighter may be heading out to pasture.

Round One: The Dream Becomes A Reality

Diego Sanchez has been looking for a huge victory to make him relevant again in the UFC Welterweight Division and he got it on Thursday Night. Although the outcome can definitely be debated, Diego Sanchez defeated Martin Kampmann by unanimous decision. Diego Sanchez competed in a shallow pool of contenders for the UFC Welterweight Division and may now find himself near the top of the rankings. Martin Kampmann will not drop too far with this loss, but he most likely finds himself on the bottom five of the division’s top ten.

Next Round For Diego Sanchez: The winner of Thiago Alves/Rick Story

Next Round For Martin Kampmann: Josh Koscheck or Mike Swick

Round Two: The Wrecking Machine Was As Advertised

When the UFC puts to excellent wrestlers inside the octagon, most people would assume that the fight will be on the ground. Somebody forgot to tell Mark Munoz as he clobbered CB Dollaway with strikes to defeat him by TKO in less than a minute. Mark Munoz, with that victory, now finds himself in contention in the UFC Middleweight Division and the title holder, Anderson Silva. CB Dollaway, who had a three fight winning streak snapped, now finds himself in the rebuilding process.

Next Round For Mark Munoz: Michael Bisping or the Nate Marquardt/Yoshihiro Akiyama winner

Next Round For CB Dollaway: Chris Leben or Jorge Rivera

Round Three: Not Bad For A Newbie

Very few people, myself included, thought that Chris Weidman could defeat Alessio Sakara on just two weeks’ notice. Everybody was proven wrong as Chris Weidman, after a shaky first round, dominated Alessio Sakara for ten minutes. While Chris Weidman could find himself a contender for the UFC Middleweight Title in the future, there is still some seasoning that he needs. Alessio Sakara, while an entertaining brawler, desperately needs to learn some ground skills if he wants to contend one day.

Next Round For Chris Weidman: CB Dollaway or Ryan Jensen

Next Round For Alessio Sakara: Court McGee or Jorge Rivera

Round Four: Long Layoff, Quick Victory

Brian Bowles shocked the MMA world over a year ago when he handily defeated Miguel Torres to become the WEC Bantamweight Champion. In his first fight since losing the title, Brian Bowles would choke out rival Damacio Page in a rematch of their first fight in the WEC. Brian Bowles now finds himself a victory or two away from another shot at the UFC Bantamweight Championships. Damacio Page can still be a threat in the UFC Bantamweight Division, but has to recover from two straight losses.

Next Round For Brian Bowles: Miguel Torres or Joseph Benavidez

Next Round For Damacio Page: Brad Pickett or Antonio Banuelos

Round Five: Daddy’s Not Home No More

It was only a few short years ago that Joe Stevenson was challenging BJ Penn for the UFC Lightweight Title at UFC 80. In present day times, Joe Stevenson cannot even be considered a top fifteen fighter in his own weight class at this point. One really has to now wonder if the UFC will even keep the fighter under contract, considering that he has lost four of his last five. Let’s not take anything away from Danny Castillo either, as he put on an exciting performance on Thursday Night.

Next Round For Danny Castillo: Spencer Fisher or Mac Danzig

Next Round For Joe Stevenson: A UFC release
