Round One: He Really Is “Mr. Wonderfulâ€
Tito Ortiz’s loss was definitely Phil Davis’s gain on Saturday Night as “Mr. Wonderful†scored a unanimous decision win over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. While it wasn’t the most spectacular performance, Phil Davis outwrestled his opponent in the final two rounds of the fight. Phil Davis now finds himself in the top five of the UFC Light Heavyweight Division and really close to a title shot. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira has now lost two straight fights and now has to rebuild before he finds himself with a pink slip.
Next Round For Phil Davis: Forrest Griffin or Quinton Jackson
Next Round For Antonio Rogerio Nogueira: Mauricio Rua or Rich Franklin
Round Two: Where Were All The Strikes?
The hype leading into the Anthony Johnson/Dan Hardy fight on Saturday Night was that it was going to be an all out slugfest. When the fight concluded though, all of those potential strikers went missing and are now on the sides of milk cartons. Anthony Johnson, after a 16 month absence, has reinvented himself with some quality wrestling to go with his striking power. Dan Hardy has now lost three straight fights in the UFC and may find himself on the outs with the company.
Next Round For Anthony Johnson: Carlos Condit or Chris Lytle
Next Round For Dan Hardy: Brian Ebersole or Mike Swick
Round Three: A Late Replacement Gets A Lot Of Elbows
Amir Sadollah originally was set to face both Duane Ludwig and James Wilks, before DaMarques Johnson stepped into the octagon. Amir Sadollah responded well to the opponent change, slaughtering DaMarques Johnson with elbow strikes until the referee stepped in. Amir Sadollah now finds himself a little higher up the welterweight ladder, still controlled by Georges St. Pierre. DaMarques Johnson still has a bright future in the UFC, but will be scouring the preliminary cards for a while.
Next Round For Amir Sadollah: Nate Diaz or Kyle Noke
Next Round For DaMarques Johnson: Kris McCray or Paulo Thiago
Round Four: Revenge Is Sweet
At the first and only WEC pay-per-view, the battle between Chan Sung Jung and Leonard Garcia easily stole the show. While the rematch didn’t feature the same blood and guts as the first encounter, the ending was even more memorable. Late in the second round, Chan Sung Jung caught Leonard Garcia in what Joe Rogan called the twister to force a tap out. The real question is whether or not there will be a rubber match between the two, which I think is desperately needed between the two.
Next Round For Chan Sung Jung: A rubber match with Leonard Garcia
Next Round For Leonard Garcia: A rubber match with Chan Sung Jung
Round Five: Not Just A Social Media Network
For the first time since the UFC started airing fights on Facebook a few months back, there were more fights on the website than what aired on the main card. A few months back, UFC President Dana White announced that he wants to see an entire card aired live through websites and TV. That once impossible dream is seemingly coming true as there were only three of twelve fights that didn’t air on any broadcast. With the UFC destroying broadcast pirates at every turn, it is ironic that they are using the same weapon to get the fights to their fans.
Next Round For Facebook: UFC 129 in April
