BELLATOR FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIPS 39 TELEVISED CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 4/1/2011 10:26 AM
After four impressive events that have already aired on MTV2, Bellator Fighting Championships highlights the fifth event with a title defense. As the Bellator Fighting Championships Lightweight Title is on the line as champion Eddie Alvarez faces Pat Curran. Also on the card is multi-time UFC veteran Ben Saunders and former BFC Welterweight Champion Lyman Good.

In the main event, the BFC Lightweight Title is on the line as champion Eddie Alvarez (21-2-0) defends against Pat Curran (13-3-0). Eddie Alvarez has been dominant in Bellator competition, even gaining victories over UFC veterans Roger Huerta and Josh Neer. Pat Curran earned the title opportunity after winning the season two BFC Lightweight Tournament by defeating Toby Imada in the finals. While Pat Curran has pulled off some amazing victories, there is no way he can defeat a dominant Eddie Alvarez.

The co-main event of this event is a BFC Welterweight Tournament Semi-Final fight as Rick Hawn (10-0-0) faces Lyman “Cyborg” Good (11-1-0). Rick Hawn earned his spot in the tournament semi-finals by defeating Jim Wallhead at BFC 35 by unanimous decision. Lyman Good got into the semi-finals of this tournament by defeating Chris Lozano at BFC 35 by unanimous decision. While Rick Hawn has been deserving of the hype Bellator has given him, Lyman Good is too good a fighter to drop this fight.

The next fight is a BFC Lightweight Tournament Semi-Final fight as Toby Imada (29-15-0) takes on Patricky “Pitbull” Freire (8-1-0). Toby Imada got into the semi-finals of this tournament by defeating Josh Shockley at BFC 36 after Shockley suffered a serious arm injury. Patricky Freire entered the semi-finals of the tournament by defeating former WEC Lightweight Champion Rob McCullough. This fight is a good submission versus striker encounter, with Patricky Freire is going to pull off a second upset.

Kicking off the card is a welterweight encounter as Ben “Killa B” Saunders (9-3-2) does battle with Matt Lee (13-9-1). Ben Saunders won four of seven fights in the UFC, with notable victories over Marcus Davis and Ryan Thomas. Matt Lee is winless in Bellator Fighting Championships competition, suffering a defeat to Ryan Quinn at BFC 15. While Matt Lee is a competent fighter, Ben Saunders is far to experienced on the big stage to lose this encounter.
