STRIKEFORCE: DIAZ VS. DALEY PRELIMINARY CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 4/5/2011 6:31 PM
Two titles will be on the line this Saturday Night as Nick Diaz defends the Strikeforce Welterweight Title against Paul Daley and Gilbert Melendez defends the Strikeforce Lightweight Title against Tatsuya Kawajiri. In an interesting piece of booking by Strikeforce, current DREAM Featherweight Champion Hiroyuki Takaya is competing on the preliminary card. The six fight preliminary card also features future prospects like Joe Duarte, Virgil Zwicker and Rolando Perez.

Kicking off the action is a middleweight encounter as Casey Ryan (1-0-0) does battle with Paul Song (2-0-0). Casey Ryan is an undefeated fighter who hasn’t fought in over three years, last defeating Jesse Juarez at a Total Combat event. Paul Song is also an undefeated fighter who is coming off an appearance in the Rage In The Cage promotion, where he defeated Justin Polendey. Despite being undefeated, Casey Ryan has way too many years in between fights to pose any kind of threat to Paul Song.

The next fight is a featherweight division fight as Edgar “Kitty Katt” Cardenas (3-0-0) faces off with Rolando Perez (5-4-1). Edgar Cardenas is coming off a two fight stint in the Native Fighting Championships, defeating Erik Villalobos and TJ Julian. Rolando Perez has previous experience in the World Extreme Cagefighting promotion, losing to Jose Aldo and Seth Dikun. The majority of this fight should take place on the ground, where Rolando Perez will be achieving victory.

Up next is a pair of welterweights doing battle as AJ Matthews (4-0-0) goes to war with Herman Terrado (5-2-0). AJ Matthews competed on the lone Powerhouse World Promotions pay-per-view, defeating Sean Choice by TKO. Herman Terrado hasn’t had an MMA fight in well over a year, but does enter the fight riding a two fight winning streak. Herman Terrado does have more experience than AJ Matthews, but AJ Matthews striking is way too good to some him drop a fight to Herman Terrado.

The next fight on the card is a lightweight division fight as Saad Awad (8-3-0) does battle with Joe Duarte (5-2-0). Saad Awad will be making his Strikeforce debut in this fight, but has competed against UFC/WEC veterans in Karen Darabedyan and Nam Phan. Joe Duarte has previously competed in the Bellator Fighting Championships, suffering a defeat to Carey Vanier. Saad Awad will be making a successful Strikeforce debut on Saturday Night as he submits Joe Duarte.

Light heavyweights will be entering the cage next as Brett Albee (3-0-0) will slug it out with Virgil “Rezdog” Zwicker (9-2-0). It has been well over a year since Brett Albee competed in an MMA fight, but he does so holding a three fight undefeated streak. Virgil Zwicker has fought once in Strikeforce, losing to Lavar Johnson at the Strikeforce Challengers 10 event. Virgil Zwicker will be avenging that loss by out slugging Brett Albee on route to earning that tenth victory.

Headlining the preliminary card is a featherweight affair as Robert Peralta (13-3-0) takes on Hiroyuki “Street Fight Bancho” Takaya (15-8-1). Robert Peralta is coming off of a long run in the Gladiator Challenge promotion, where he won eight of nine fights. Hiroyuki Takaya is the current DREAM Featherweight Champion, but is coming off a victory in the K-1 promotion. While Robert Peralta has a good fight record, there is no way that Hiroyuki Takaya is dropping this one.
