BELLATOR FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIPS 40 TELEVISED CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 4/7/2011 6:54 PM
Due to the officials at Bellator Fighting Championships not releasing the full preliminary card as of this writing, I decided to just put up the televised card preview up first. The televised card features the season four debut of BFC Welterweight Champion Ben Askren and the debut of a UFC veteran. Also, a pair of semi-final fights from the BFC Lightweight and BFC Lightweight Tournaments will take place.

This card is being headlined by a non-title fight as BFC Welterweight Champion “Funky” Ben Askren (7-0-0) faces Nick “The Goat” Thompson (38-13-1). Ben Askren won the BFC Welterweight Title by first winning the season two tournament and then defeating Lyman Good at BFC 33. Nick Thompson enters the fight riding a three fight losing streak, with some of those losses coming to Dan Hornbuckle and Tim Kennedy. This fight should become a quality affair on the ground, which is where Ben Askren will shine as the stronger wrestler to earn the victory.

Up next is a BFC Welterweight Tournament Semi-Final encounter as Jay “The Thoroughbred” Hieron (20-4-0) takes on Brent Weedman (18-5-1). Jay Hieron earned his spot into the semi-finals after defeating Anthony Lapsley by submission at BFC 35. Brent Weedman pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament when he defeated Dan Hornbuckle in the first round of the tournament. Brent Weedman will not be pulling off a second upset as Jay Hieron is going to out wrestle Brent Weedman on route to a victory.

Kicking off the evening is a BFC Lightweight Tournament Semi-Final fight as Michael Chandler (6-0-0) takes on Lloyd “Cupcake” Woodard (11-0-0). Michael Chandler earned a spot into the semi-finals after defeating Marcin Held by submission at BFC 36. Lloyd Woodard fought his way into the tournament semi-finals after defeating Carey Vanier by TKO at BFC 36. This fight is a battle of the undefeated fighters, but Michael Chandler is going to keep his undefeated streak alive by using his superior wrestling skills.
