UFC 129: ST. PIERRE VS. SHIELDS PAY-PER-VIEW PREVIEW

By David Tees on 4/29/2011 10:57 PM
The long awaited battle between UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields is only a few hours away. Besides the title fight, UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo makes a title defense and UFC legend Randy Couture returns to the octagon. Remember, due to the UFC changing start times, this pay-per-view event will be starting at 9pm EST on Saturday Night.

Headlining this card is a UFC Welterweight Title fight as champion Georges “Rush” St. Pierre (21-2-0) defends against Jake Shields (26-4-1). Georges St. Pierre has successfully defended his championship five times in a row since regaining it from Matt Serra at UFC 83. Jake Shields enters the fight riding a fifteen fight winning streak, recently defeating Martin Kampmann to earn a title shot. This fight is going to be determined by Jake Shields ability to put the fight on the ground, which is why I’m choosing Georges St. Pierre to keep the title.

The UFC Featherweight Title will be defended as well when champion Jose “Scarface” Aldo (18-1-0) defends against Mark “The Machine” Hominick (20-8-0). Jose Aldo has been dominant in the WEC before entering the UFC, winning eight fights before coming to the octagon. Mark Hominick earned an opportunity at the title when he defeated George Roop by TKO at UFC Fights For The Troops II. While Mark Hominick is a skilled fighter, Jose Aldo is way too lethal to drop the title to the Canadian fighter.

A pair of light heavyweights will go to war next as Jason “The Hitman” Brilz (18-3-1) faces off with Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko (25-5-0). It has been nearly a year since Jason Brilz last competed in the UFC, which was a close decision loss to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 114. Vladimir Matyushenko has won three of four since returning to the UFC, with a notable win over Eliot Marshall. This fight is a battle of two skilled ground fighters, but it will be Vladimir Matyushenko grinding out the win.

Another set of light heavyweights are squaring off next as Randy “The Natural” Couture (19-10-0) takes on Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida (16-2-0). Randy Couture recently stated that this will be his final MMA fight and is riding a three fight winning streak. Lyoto Machida is a former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, but has lost two straight fights in the UFC. While Randy Couture is seemingly an ageless fighter, it will be Lyoto Machida getting his hand raised on Saturday Night.

Kicking off the evening is a lightweight encounter as Mark Bocek (9-3-0) will do battle with Ben “Smooth” Henderson (12-2-0). Mark Bocek has won five of eight in the UFC, including a major win over Dustin Hazelett at UFC 124 in December 2010. Ben Henderson is a former WEC Lightweight Champion who lost the title to Anthony Pettis in the final WEC event in the promotions history. This fight will be determining who is to become a player in the lightweight division and it will be Mark Bocek doing so.
