Round One: Even With One Eye, He Keeps The Title
Georges St. Pierre is arguably the greatest fighter in MMA history and he added to that credibility with another top performance this past weekend. With only one eye, Georges St. Pierre kept the pressure on Jake Shields to pick up a unanimous decision victory. Georges St. Pierre now has three interesting options to consider for his next fight, with one option being a non-UFC fighter. The strategy of Jake Shields must come into question because he never took the fight to his strongest area, the ground.
Next Round For Georges St. Pierre: Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz, UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva or Carlos Condit
Next Round For Jake Shields: Diego Sanchez or Chris Lytle
Round Two: “Heart†Is Spelled H-O-M-I-N-I-C-K
Very few people, me included, gave Mark Hominick a chance to defeat top rated UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo at UFC 129. However, little by little as the fight went on, Mark Hominick looked like he was all but ready to pull the upset. Jose Aldo, thanks to strong leg kicks and well-timed takedowns, was able to secure a unanimous decision victory. Most people in the arena and at home though, watched Mark Hominick in round five and thought that the upset was coming.
Next Round For Jose Aldo: Chad Mendes
Next Round For Mark Hominick: Chan Sung Jung or Leonard Garcia
Round Three: A Legend Makes His Exit
I have nothing but the utmost respect for what Randy Couture has accomplished in his MMA career, but his performance on Saturday Night proved why retirement is necessary. Lyoto Machida dominated the fight before taking Randy Couture out for good with a crane kick in the second round. Lyoto Machida probably saved his UFC career with that victory, which stopped a two fight losing streak. Randy Couture can now step into the world of retirement and continue to train his teammates at the highly touted Camp Couture. Next Round For Lyoto Machida: The Matt Hamill/Quinton Jackson winner Next Round For Randy Couture: Retirement
Round Four: Not Bad For A Janitor
When Vladimir Matyushenko returned to the UFC a little over a year ago, I was ecstatic to see what the former IFL Light Heavyweight Champion can do. Outside of a loss to Jon Jones, Vladimir Matyushenko has won four of five fights in his current run in the UFC. “The Janitor†made a statement on Saturday Night when he abolished Jason Brilz in less than thirty seconds into the fight. Vladimir Matyushenko now finds himself on the verge of having an opportunity to make one more run in the UFC.
Next Round For Vladimir Matyushenko: A rubber match with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
Next Round For Jason Brilz: A release from the UFC
Round Five: That Was A Long Night
If you are somebody who watched every fight on Facebook, Spike TV and pay-per-view, then you spent well over six hours watching UFC 129 on Saturday Night. While I have been known to cover a lot of MMA during my time on PWInsiderXtra, that would even be cutting it close for me. However, one must also give the UFC credit for giving their fans all the action they can handle, twelve fights in all. The fans definitely got their money’s worth, with seven of twelve fights ending with a TKO or submission.
Next Round For The UFC: UFC 130 on May 28th
