UFC 130: RAMPAGE VS. HAMILL PAY-PER-VIEW CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 5/27/2011 1:50 PM
Originally set to be the setting for the third encounter between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard, UFC 130 now features a battle between Quinton Jackson and Matt Hamill. Also on the card are a former UFC Heavyweight Champion and the return of a former UFC middleweight competitor. Remember, like last month’s UFC 130 pay-per-view, this broadcast will be kicking off at 9pm. EST. on Saturday Night.

Headlining the card is a potential UFC Light Heavyweight Title eliminator as Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (31-8-0) faces Matt “The Hammer” Hamill (10-2-0). Quinton Jackson is coming off the biggest win since dropping the UFC Light Heavyweight Title, defeating Lyoto Machida at UFC 123. Matt Hamill enters the fight riding a five fight winning streak, including a DQ win over current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones. This fight is going to be the breakout fight for Matt Hamill, who will out wrestle Quinton Jackson on route to a decision victory.

The co-main event is a heavyweight duel as Frank Mir (14-5-0) goes to battle with Roy “Big Country” Nelson (15-5-0). Frank Mir is coming off what most people consider to be the most boring main event in UFC history, a knockout victory over MIrko Cro Cop at UFC 119. Roy Nelson hasn’t competed in nearly a year due to contract issues, but he has won two of three in the UFC. This fight will be for a top five spot in the UFC Heavyweight Division, which Frank Mir will be winning over Roy Nelson.

Another pair of heavyweights are going to fight next as Travis “Hapa” Browne (10-0-1) takes on Stefan “Skyscraper” Struve (21-4-0). Travis Browne is currently undefeated in UFC competition, defeating James McSweeney and fighting Cheick Kongo to a draw. Stefan Struve enters this fight riding a two fight winning streak, with victories over Christian Morecraft and Sean McCorkle. This fight may turn out to be a slugfest, but I see Stefan Struve taking a victory here by way of submission.

A battle between middleweights is up next as Jorge Santiago (23-8-0) faces off with “All American” Brian Stann (10-3-0). Jorge Santiago is returning to the UFC after a four plus year absence, but he has captured the Sengoku Middleweight Title in between appearances. Brian Stann has been undefeated since moving to the middleweight division, having defeated Mike Massenzio and Chris Leben. This fight is going to be one heck of a slugfest, but it will be Jorge Santiago picking up the victory on his UFC return.

The evening will begin with a welterweight encounter as Thiago “Pitbull” Alves (18-7-0) takes on Rick “Horror” Story (12-3-0). Thiago Alves ended his two fight losing streak at UFC 124, when he defeated John Howard by unanimous decision. Rick Story enters the fight riding a five fight winning streak, with notable victories over Dustin Hazelett and Johny Hendricks. This fight is a battle between a grappler and a striker, in which the grappler in Rick Story will be winning.
